I consider this novel to be one to my absolute favourites of all time but even I admit that it can really drag at times 😅 Hugo did a lot of research for this story and by God are you going to hear about it.
It took you over a month? It's taken me over 8 years and I wish I was kidding!!!! I always put it down and picked up other things because it couldn't hold me. But I kept coming back for those characters. And I am FINALLY 80 pages away from being done! Such a wonderful story, truly.
After seeing this I conclude that I did in fact read an abridged version (I’m the one with the difficult username). I can highly recommend that. I’m not an abridged version kind of girl, normally, but I really enjoyed this book and since my passion doesn’t lie in architecture I’m happy how it turned out in the end.
I loved it the first time, but the second time around it was rough and I couldn’t do it. One day I will again! I can’t wait for the next book club read.
Very good review. I enjoyed watching it. You have an energetic delivery. I just ordered a copy of this book. Most reviews I have seen say this is not an easy book to read Thank you. Richard in Dallas , Texas.
Just ordered the book and I'm really excited to read it! Thanks for your lovely review! The way everybody talked about Victor's writing reminds me of my history teacher, last time in class we were watching a movie about the first World War and he would constantly pause the movie to tell us something about it. 😂
I just bought another copy of War And Peace, a novel I love (and yeah it is massive compared to Hunchback but believe me it's a really addictive and wonderful read!). I still want to read more Hugo but...Tolstoy appeals so much more.
Do a little research on translations. Because I have read them all I think and some are easier than others (don't be ashamed to read a version with anglicised names)
I hope you choose a book I have or can find in my used book store. Kudos to you for persevering and finishing the book. I know what you mean about making yourself read a book. I did that with the Lord of the Rings series. I literally made myself read a chapter a night,(better than a sleeping pill)! I didn't really get into the story til the middle of the 2nd book. When there are hard names and so many are similar, I can't keep up with who's who, it's very frustrating. Good review of the book.
Many will kill me for this, but there are far more enjoyable fantasy series out there. I highly recommend Robin Hobb's works. Great, GREAT cast if characters, a really unique and wonderfully realised world and whilst long, it is utterly captivating. The first book is Assassin's Apprentice. Honestly so much more rewarding than Tolkien, I don't care what anyone says.
Just finished the book today and it makes me hate the Disney “adaptation”. The ending actually plucked at my heartstrings a bit. It does drag on with the history of architecture but other than that, I loved the relationship between Don Claude Frollo and Quasimodo.
I finished "Hunchback" earlier today. It was a challenge to get through, but it was worth the effort. I think I've had some kind of dream relating to the book almost every night since I started reading it, it stuck in my head. I read this right after Dickens's "Tale of Two Cities", I recommend reading these two back to back. Both are historical fictions set in Paris, written over in the 1800's about a historical time that occurred before the books were written, so there two levels of "historical" with each. Overall, I liked "Two Cities" better because of the pacing, "Hunchback" was all over the place in this regards. However, reading "Hunchback" after "Two Cities" gives one a picture about how much influence Hugo had on Dickens. One may question if Dickens would have even had the idea for "Two Cities" if he hadn't read "Hunchback" first. ------------------- [mild spoiler]: I'm still recovering from the ending. I was not expecting the ending to be that dark. It feels like Hugo decided to hit his audience over the head with a sledgehammer at the finish line. I saw the Disney movie so long ago that I don't remember how it ended, but I don't remember the ending being anything like what happened in the book.
Thank you for this spoiler-free review! I hate historical fiction when it's focus is on war and politics, but I'm interested in architecture and fashion. I also have fallen in love with Frollo's complex character, who I have recently been introduced to through the French version of the Disney Movie. I was searching for some reviews to see if I would possibly enjoy it, and judging from this review, I think I might. I'm going to try to read this in the language it was written in, French. Wish me luck!
Thinking of you watching the scenes in Paris - what a loss to us all, anyone ever reading the book in the future is going to read it with such a different eye. Keep singing x
I loved your video! I’ve just finished reading the book and went on booktube to look for other people’s opinions. You know what I did to those architecture parts? I just SKIPPED them! 😁 Seriously. I’ve read The Man who Laughs by V. Hugo in January so thanks to that book I knew for sure those long long long chapters about the architecture don’t really have anything to do with the plot in Hugo’s books, so this time I knew what to do and didn’t have to suffer through them. But yes, I loved the book too, every story is so dramatic but sooo logical. Although I think that Hugo really like torturing the readers. I’m going to also read Lés Miserables.
Honestly I actually prefer the 1996 Disney film. It was easier to follow. Esmeralda and Quasimodo were more likeable than they are in the book. Also I like Claude Frollo better as Judge than a Priest. Also Frollo was a much cooler than he was in the book. I’m probably the only one who likes the the three Gargoyles. But that’s just me. This is coming from a guy who can’t stand Dory in Finding Nemo, so what do I know? To each their own.
A really excellent review. I love the historical backstory you gave and that your review is spoiler free is a bonus! I’ve just started reading a free copy online and I’m finding it a bit of a slog but you’re review has given me the motivation to persevere :)
@@hannahtaybooks I tried to read it twice thinking I must have read it and missed the point. Tried it AGAIN. Nope. I was right. It's trivial and really boring. Greatest novel of all time my arse!!!! I do love Benjamin Button though haha

So true!
Having read Les Misérables I can say that this is just what his writing style is. It looks like he likes a lot descriptions and doing his researches

I'm going to re read this book but just read an abridged version because I adored the character driven parts.
I love you highlighting other people's comments and responding to them!
Thank you I love filming these videos where I get to interact with people.

Anyone who finished this book is a hero, well done!!
hehe true!
I adore this book! I read it when I was 13 and have loved it since, every year I reread because it is my favorite
I was thinking about reading it after Dracula by bran stoker. But I also wanted to try phantom of the opera do you know if that’s good?
@@lololulu1238 Dracula for sure
I finished reading it today! I really liked it! Really exciting! And yeah, a lot of descriptions! :D

THANK YOU I've seen no one else comment on how comedic the book can be 😔

Give it ago!
Two years later and my question is: did you read it?
I may now read an abridged edition...
I would recommend that as the character parts are amazing!
I can't wait to see what it is... hope to join in this time around
I hope you join in!
Best video on this book!
Wow, thanks!
