They’re the health of the buildings. You can tap them while you’re waiting to damage them, and when the wheels fully deplete, the buildings fall down

Much like most design requirements for the vehicle it came from the military notion that their way was best. On launch you would surely be killed if ejecting during launch by the SRBs or SSMEs but during the glide to the runway after reentry you would most likely survive the ejection given you were in one of two seats that had the system installed.
