    I spend a LOT of time with my sheep and they walk up to me - bringing them alfalfa and just hanging out to normalize myself to them was the best time I've ever spent. Catching them is super easy - except for babies who don’t know me yet lol. They let me get near but if I try to grab they run lol!

  • @GeigerFarm
    @GeigerFarm 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    LOL! ;) Seriously, animals "read" you and your behavior. If your behavior tells them to RUN...they will run, and usually they are more agile and faster! Sheep are a prey animal and they know it, YOU are a predator. The comment below about using a "pen" is a good one. In your situation, I would use my children to create a "pen" (restrict movement) so that I could catch the sheep! As the alpha male, you can direct/employ your pack to accomplish your goals ;) You could also feed/salt/water the sheep in a smaller catch area! IT NEVER PAYS TO GET MAD OR EXCITED WHEN WORKING ANIMALS. If you ever "run" after an animal, you had better catch it...fleeing is a prey animals only defense. They don't need practice or to LEARN that as a predator you are slower ;)

    • @4KidsandaFarm
      @4KidsandaFarm  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Geiger Farm yes, thank you. In our other paddocks we have areas where we can corner and trap the sheep...not this one...I put to much faith in the crook...when it should be the supplemental tool. Well, live and learn. I should have taken the time to set up a squeeze or something...ps my kids hate when I have to catch sheep...they hide!

    I am a shepherdess in my mid 60's with 200 sheep, no dog, that I move by myself. I have always taught my sheep to follow with a bucket of grain. You will collect quite a few that way. I then lock them up in a stall. Leave the barn door open and stay out of the way, while the others walk into the barn to see their buddies. Then I follow up behind and close the barn door. There will always be a few flighty ones that just won't come in the barn, but those I can get into the barnyard and they don't even know that they are caught. Once you start moving quickly, and chasing sheep, you need to stop, go have a drink, and try again later. I tend to put the real flighty ones on the truck. I don't want to breed that temperament into my sheep.

    • @4KidsandaFarm
      @4KidsandaFarm  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Joan Hale thank you so much for this helpful comment...this is defiantly not the way I usually do it...we have catch pens in the other paddocks that we can corner them in and catch them that way...I, erroneously, thought that the crook would let me just snag one and then be done...obviously I was supper wrong. We plan to do better bucket training and preferences the casual way rather than the linebacker way😂...thanks again for your kind instructions...we realize that people can eviscerate us for our “technique”...we defiantly aren’t pros...so one thing we want to do is show our progress and our downfalls. One day I would love to have a video on a perfect coordinated sheep capture...and we are working towards that.

  • @logancook4538

    What I did yesterday was attract most of them with a bucket then I got close enough to grab their wool and straddle them while grabbing their ears and walking them to where I want. Sometimes they will get excited about their molasses so that can help lure them in. Try hand feeding for a bit to get them comfy with you.

    Take three of those galvanized gates and make a pen in the corner of the field. Two on one wall, the third as a gate. The idea is to move them into progressively smaller pens until you can reach from side to side with the crook or a calf rope. Having several sheep/goats in the pen helps. They get in each others way and hopefully don't run into the fence headfirst. Go slow and easy. Sheep are calm if you can get them hemmed up in a small pen. I prefer the calf rope. It's smaller and more supple than a cow lariat. A couple of wraps around a forearm or the waist and then it's a matter of brute force to drag them where you want them. Have your sons carry lambs around their neck and shoulders and they will be ready for football by the time the lamb is 40 pounds. A couple of feet of leather strap to hog tie the grown sheep and a two wheeled cart from Tractor Supply makes it easier to drag sheep from one pasture to another. Tie/bolt a couple of cedar stays down the sides of the cart to the handles and it can even be used as a rickshaw so one or three of the boys can drag it along similar to an oxen.

    • @4KidsandaFarm
      @4KidsandaFarm  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for them phenomenal run down...we often watch shows where they have scute and pens...and we would love that kind of infrastructure. We have gotten a bit better at handling the sheep since we made this video...but we can always improve.

  • @lesliemandic9673
    @lesliemandic9673 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    That IS a good laugh I have 2 pet Nigerian Dwarf goats (or Nigies.) They beat me out the gate at times so I love my kiwi crook! But they are much easier to handle in my back yard. They do most of what they are asked except come in once outside the gate. Watch the sheep dogs they don't chase they circle. I don't know about Sheep but goats can see for like 320 degrees. Hard to sneak up on.
    It's easy to say you need a sheep dog and if you grow you herd you may but they take a LOT of work so really research them1st. Good luck thanks for sharing!
