The Untied States was one of the last countries to outlaw chattel slavery. BUT there is an important caveat. It was actually never banned outright. The 13th amendment does make allowance for forced labor for those convicted of crimes. And wouldn't you know, convictions resulting in forced labor sentences surged in the South following the Civil War. You'll never see that video on Prager U.
That's interesting. Can you point me where to learn more? Specifically about what you said about the increase in forced labor sentences. I'd never heard that claim before, though I did know about the exception in the Constitution.
@@alyssahansen1400 It's a bit of missing the forest for the trees. Basically the South did everything it could to restore it's pool of cheap labor. However this and penal labor was not the same thing as chattel slavery, as before the Civil War the Southerners use their slaves as breeding stock to increase their "inventory" of highly valuable slaves. Yes, blacks are inherently incapable of living in White civilization and pretending that the low IQ subhuman savages can coexist with their genetic superiors is systemic racism.
My favourite take on slavery is that it wasn’t based on racism it just made sense from an economic point of view. I guess it was just coincidence that all the slaves were black.
Technically slavery wasn't based on racism; racism was based on slavery. Europeans invented their racial ideas in order to justify the brutal torture and slaughter of black people. Racism is literally 400 year old victim-blaming propaganda, which we still have to contend with today.
That's based on a very shallow interpretation racism and a poor understanding of slavery. Defining racism as merely being violent or unkind towards people of a different race is a poor definition. Imagine a school bully in a very diverse school. If he bullies people of the same race, it's not racist, but the moment he starts to bully a different race, suddenly it's racism? How do you know he isn't just bullying everyone because he likes to push people around and not because of racism? A better definition of racism is not one based on action but belief. It's a set of beliefs that says one race is superior or inferior to another. You could no more easily tell a person is a racist by actions than you could a Christian. Someone going to a Christian church does not automatically make them Christian, nor does violence against a different race automatically make you a racist. I'm sure such nuance is lost on you, but if you actually care about truth and facts, it actually really matters. At some point in history, nearly every race enslaved their own race. Europeans enslaved Europeans and Asians enslaved Asians, same is true for Africans. Slavery is a blight on human history.
@@seaoftranquility7228Based on race and being racist aren't the same thing. Anyway, the north Atlantic slave trade was unique in that it was primarily divided by race, looking at a longer view of history, that was unusual. Also, the slaves being sold primarily in africa were not captured by foreigners but by africans themselves. Do you also believe africans sold their own race into slavery because they were racist against their own race? There's a lot more to slavery than race, hopefully you can muster enough of a mind to see that one day.

How can it be true that there is a universal moral truth (provided by God as laid down in an infallible Bible thousands of years ago) but also it be true that you can’t judge historical people by modern (presumably the same, universal) morality? How can gods infallible morality be both permanent and change over time?
@@tubeguy4066 there is no such thing as "universal morality". Morality changes over time and with cultural input, including the morals of "god". There was a time when the god in the Bible killed more people than any heathen god of Canaan. The god of the Bible flooded the world and bid Israelites to cut open the wombs of the Canaanites and dash their infants upon the rocks. The way the Abrahamic god treats his own believers is wildly arbitrary and amoral, from Ishmael to Job. He is a petty, spiteful god that does not resemble the god of the New Testament at all. It is so bad a contrast that Gnostics attempted to reconcile the bipolarity with the idea of the demiurge and the monad.
It's worth noting that a fundamental part of Jewish and Christian ethos is that people are supposed to make cases for a better standard of morality in their society as time goes on, and that people should always be working toward treating others more caringly. I'm saying this not to justify any of the tragedies and crimes of the past, but to say further that Prager is a complete tool, as he constantly tries to enforce a stagnant and self-righteous morality on others that is not a progression of Jewish or Christian values but a massive step back. None of anything terrible which happened in the past was ever justified, regardless of what was normal at the time, and just because something was normal does not mean it was seen as moral or fine at the time. So many rancid things people do today is normal, but we all have a problem with things like pollution and corruption, the destabilization and exploitation of smaller nations, etc. And if you are so vain and cowardly as to refuse to criticize the past, you cannot improve your present nor do any good for anyone.

The Untied States was one of the last countries to outlaw chattel slavery. BUT there is an important caveat. It was actually never banned outright. @@alyssahansen1400 It's a bit of missing the forest for the trees.
I wonder what a PragerU video about the cornerstone speech would be like.

Cognitive dissonance is their modus operandi.
Modern morality is not the same as the universal morality. Not that hard to understand

Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: 25 and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock.
26 “But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand: 27 and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it fell. And great was its fall.
There is also a great part right before this:
Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. 22 Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’ 23 And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’
Essentially, you have to actually walk the walk.
I remember when PragerU first came out, all the internet atheists came out to bash it, but as soon as they pivoted to anti-feminism, they all went mum.
what is the take away from that when you think about it?
I'm an atheist and i never fell for that anti-feminism anti-sjw crap. But i agree that an absurd amount of atheists got on that band-wagon.

man there's a lot to pick apart with any of these propaganda videos.
prager's stuff is usually extremely oversimplistic, and deliberately misleading.
"because they do more crimes" is a very, very surface level observation. and is typical of the kinds of ways they explain anything.
reminds me of those npc meme videos the WHO put out over 2021-2022.
It's astounding how frequently I encounter people who actually think PragerU is _not_ propaganda.
The propaganda techniques aren't even subtle or good. Their videos scream, "I'm hiding something," "This is a lie, but I doubt you'll look it up," and, "I pulled this graph directly out of my @$$, and it stinks like it's been up there for years."
do you understand why they get made? why they say such simple things?
PragerU is not perfect, but to act like they're doing something any worse than stupid leftist videos giving their woke/critical race theory and/or other leftist ideology take on history, current events, media, movies or whatever it be, it's all in the same realm as what PragerU does. It's all preachy bullshit. Funny thing is, as an old 90's liberal '90s who grew up fundamental Christian in the Midwest I left the church and religion behind because I loved 90s liberalism when it was live and let live, If you don't like it turn the channel, real civil liberties and against political correctness at all cost kind of awesomeness, You know real George Carlin kind of shit. With that background, you'd think I'd hate PragerU, but the left has become so infuriating with the religion like ideology and their constant bitching and moaning and preaching at you that now I find myself defending things like PragerU and other right-wing or religious shit. Congratulations leftist You become worst than fucking religious assholes. How about a former Christian turned atheist, teaching a Jewish person about what's really in the old Scripture?
True story: I once heard a Jewish man claimed that the Devil, "Satan", was entirely made up by Christians for the Gospel -- that there's absolutely no mention of Satan in the Old Testament.
Me: Wait ... what about the Book of Job?? You know, the story of how God bumped into Satan while surveying the Earth, then the both of them made a bet on whether or not Satan could ruin Job's life to the point where Job would curse God to His face? Doesn't THAT predate Christianity?
Jewish Man: [surprised Pikachu face]
Not enough money in Judaism for Mr. Prager. He whored himself out to the Right-Wing Christian Evangelicals.
I mean, Christ was a Jewish man. Not necessarily that strange.
"future generations are not responsible for the sins of the past" um pragur u? Isn't that like one of the core foundational beliefs of your religion that you're shoving down our throats? In regards to Colombus being brought back to Spain in chains, there's some evidence to suggest that was less about morality and more about the Spanish crown using Tyranny as an esxuse to seize control if his assets and prevent any of their colonial governors from becoming too independent.
Also, one must remember that this is the same Spanish government that created the inquisition, and no one expected that.
Georg just discovered that there is a political media industry.

As an American in High school, I actually never knew that Columbus was tried for his crimes, I wonder why, 🤔🤔🤔.
That's because you are an American that studied in an American high school. Your education system sucks and your average person in the USA is dumb as a brick. That's why you have a president with Alzheimer's. You are also probably too young to have watched the TV mini-series from the 80's where that very thing was clearly depicted.
"We have to judge him by the standards of his own time." Looks like in his own time they judged him pretty harshly.
I remember being taught that he was tried for his crimes but I remember it being framed as unjust.

Concerning slavery he didn't excuse it but pointed out that slavery still exist and wasn't a white on black crime throughout history. It's often omitted that history is full of slavery often with black tribes enslaving other black tribes. It isn't a uniquely American problem. I think Georg should have pointed that out.
@@EbonyPope if it isn't are you ok with it happening right now again here in america? If it isn't ok now it wasn't ok then and that is why people talk about it - so its never ok. If someone owns someone else and say keeps them in their basement - given who sold them to said person these rightwing weirdos would be totally ok with that - even if it was children. The same people who say the are pro life, worry about kids, and the family are like "well black people sold them so its all good".

Prager saying "thoughts aren't evil" is an illustration of how incompatible Judaism and Christianity are. It's very natural for Prager, a Jew, to think this, because (to my understanding) Judaism focuses more on action and ritual, and thoughtcrime is specifically a Christian addition. It's just galling to me that he otherwise basically erases this distinction and uses the offensive and inaccurate term "Judeo-Christian" as if that word isn't anything but antisemitic.
I appreciate your commitment to the research of history & the truth

Says a lot about a person when they say the only thing keeping them from committing crimes is the fear of Santa Claus putting a lump of coal in their stocking. I mean Zeus throwing a lighting bolt at them. I mean a Christian deity sending a swarm of locusts. Wait, what are the repercussions again?
that depends on the city you live in

Let's try to follow the reasoning to a logical conclusion here:
1. Without God-based rules people would be bad
2. Therefore people must be inherently bad
3. God created man in his own image
4. Therefore God must be bad
5. A bad God would make bad rules
6. People who follow God's bad rules become bad people
7. As are people who don't follow them
8. Both God and people, regardless of belief, are now bad
9. God has rendered himself inconsequential
how very simplistic. it's like you tried your hardest to pretend to understand and not understand at the same time. either you made giant mistakes on purpose because you really want to sound clever while thinking everyone else is too dumb to see it, or you genuinely made huge mistakes in your reasoning and should probably learn to know what you are talking about before you talk about it. there's literally no other way to look at that😂
