    Very nicely done! I’m a Civil Engineer who travels globally working with missions organizations and NGOs to help them with their sanitation and water needs. Obviously, I’ve run into my far share of funky water and questionable treatment methods. Chlorine always works and I’d far rather have water that smells a bit like a swimming pool than endure days of recovery from travelers’ lower gastric distress. 😉 Here’s hoping your subscribers take your advice.

      Thanks! I feel the same way, chlorine is nasty stuff, but better tolerated than a nasty bug. I’m open to other options, but bleach seems to be tried snd true!

    I have dumped my 37 gal tank of bleach/water from my fresh tank onto the ground and my grass didn't even turn brown or even yellow. I didn't care about the spot as we are expanding our driveway over that area. I just wanted to see what would happen. And nothing did. So I pass this bit if info over to you. You are correct though, bigger tanks may affect the area, 37 gal though has not.

    After i get tge bleach thru my lines i fill up my fresh water tank again so it is as close to the top as i can get it for sloshing around and getting top of tank. Also another reason i use 1/3 cup of bleach per 15 gals, is this extra added water. Also you can smell the bleach better.

    • @Stonyboot

      That’s a good point. I go a little stronger on the bleach to compensate for the refill. I’ve gotten several comments which makes me want to dig a little deeper into the actual science of the process. Thanks for your feedback!

      Very likely, or, just simply a bad weld. I want able to inspect the old unit, but after research and talking to people, chlorine can be bad news for some of the components.

  • @Okinawaboater
    @Okinawaboater 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    As always, great info! Just a quick question. Why bother to premix/dilute the gallon of bleach? You know how much you need for your entire system so can't you just go ahead and pour the bleach direct into your semi-empty tank and then fill it up. The freshwater coming in will mix it for you... Plus, with using the measuring cup, pour in.. no splashing or leaks. Just food for thought. Keep up the great work Stonyboot!!!

    • @Stonyboot
      @Stonyboot  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good points, but there are reasons behind diluting the bleach first. Primarily, it's less corrosive to the tubing and to the truck if it's spilled. It also ensures accurate dosing and mixing. The measuring cup won't fit into that hole, I can get it in there kind of, but it leaks out due to surface tension. Thanks for watching!

    Very thorough and well reasoned, Scott. Only one aside: I've heard that 1 micron hose filter produces a slow flow, but that hasn't been my experience. Or at least, the difference seems to have been negligible. Only on our 2nd one (we change them out each year, and we're not full-timing) so time will tell. Definitely an essential 'post fill' step to keep tank water as good as it can be.

    • @Stonyboot
      @Stonyboot  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ours was nice and fast, for a while. Then it slowed down. I’d say after 1 month if use, it’a only about 20% of the “new” flow rate. But it’s usable, I just don’t like using it if there is a line behind me. The water quality is amazing though!

    I know that bleach water is diluted, and I know you've been doing this for two years, but are you concerned that in the future the paint on your truck may start to discolor from allowing the bleach water to overflow out of the gravity fill like that?

      @Stonyboot  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's a really good point! I always rinse it down when I'm done, I just didn't mention it. Also, as it finishes filling, there is little to no bleach in that fill tube. Or you could use proper amount of bleach. 6% bleach, 8 drops per gallon, 8.25% bleach, 6 drops per gallon in the holding tank, filter drinking water for taste thus not waste 100 gallons of water. Just a thought.

    Good video and something everyone should be doing, especially full timers. I do however, wonder about the hours the bleach is in the tanks and lines, I was in the Clinical Reference Laboratory business for 20 years and I gotta say, a 10% bleach solution was used everywhere. I even saw a lab tech gargle with it after drawing the blood from a guy that was orange from hepatitis. I get you aren't using a 10% solution, but hours in the tank? Anything and everything in that tank will be dead in seconds and I fail to see any reason to keep it in the tank any longer than absolutely necessary. Bleach is not kind to certain parts of the system and in particular valves and faucets. I get the bleach in on a half tank, put the water to it to fill it, then open everything up and and keep the tank filling with the hose, As soon as the water if running oder-less, I stop. I do use a blue filter to fill my tanks and then a Sawyer Tap, SP134, that attaches to my faucet for all drinking water. I will be looking into that green filter as 1 micron is pretty good and would work nicely in line with the blue one, with the green one last in the line. The Sawyer is a .1 micron filter so I can drink from stock tanks if I want.

    • @Stonyboot
      @Stonyboot  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree with you completely. However, I based these numbers off of established procedures promoted by RV organizations. I do know that chlorine tablets need some time to kill bacteria and viruses in drinking water, something around 45-60 minutes. I'm not sure why they suggest 12-24 hours for RVs. But, until I have solid facts, I'll go with the established practices.
      If you have additional information, please email me at info@stonyboot.com. I'd love to make another video with an alternative method. I'm just not knowledgeable enough to lead the charge.

  • @cirrus820travelers9
    @cirrus820travelers9 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Alrighty. You covered this well. Just a few comments to share. Especially beginning into use after purchase or storage. Back in our 2019Cirrus820 for a year we used this process. We pour the bleach (measured) directly into a drained female-end hose without any filter and connect to spigot & fill. Our truck camper has a fill station while our 5th wheel doesn't. Works for both with minimal effort or contact. And through our fulltime travels we've definitely recieved great and terribly bad potable water. A clear see-thru filter shows product we fill with good & bad. YUP! Frog, insects, gravel, sand. Always important in rv'ing to use filters. Imagine the debris clogging a water pump or shower head.
    Final thought addressing where to discharge bleached water. It's used to kill bacteria. In sewer lines it attacks the good bacteria needed to break solids down in closed systems ie septic tanks. Many national & state parks have septic systems. While they are huge readers may do this at home. Small systems are very sensitive. We never used bleach for laundry at home for that reason. We also periodically add 2 ozs. when filling during summer heat when algae grows vigorously. It'll show up in clear filter housing so it must be in tank as well?
    Safe travels! See you down the road.

    • @Stonyboot
      @Stonyboot  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      All great points!
      I really like your idea about adding the bleach to the hose, that's brilliant! I'll be trying that next time :)
      What do you use for a see-thru filter?
      I did ask for permission to dump into the campgrounds septic. Bleach is never good for septic systems, but given the choice between dumping on the ground or in the septic, they campground opted for the septic. While trying to make videos for TH-cam, I try to be mindful of doing things the right way. However, nothing is perfect and sometimes you gotta do what ya gotta do.

    Those RV water pumps have thermal overload protection so if the pump motor exceeds a certain temp it will shut off. Running it with low back pressure - many taps open - there is not much load on the motor. Also don't pile a bunch of "stuff" on top of it to prevent overheating.

    • @Stonyboot

Anyway, if you get a chance, check their factory out. Very impressive. Keep going you too.

      Scott & Sasha have a well done video on their YT channel on the NuCamp factory...and yet, it may already be outdated, given the pace at which the factory (and new Customer Service Center) is expanding. Check it out, if you can.

      We did a factory tour and posted the video here: th-cam.com/video/vRyiHmz7GXs/w-d-xo.html
      I hope you can find a camper someday soon, I suspect that the RV market will settle down over the next year.
      Thanks for the support and enjoy the weather in FL!

    Very nice tutorial. I use hot tub test strips to check for chlorine in the water when running the taps since it can be hard to smell the bleach once you have the fumes in your nose from diluting the bleach. No need to use your tongue. Also a good way to test municipal water before you add to your tank and after you flush the bleach out of your lines. Cheers!

    I want to clarify what i said about being plastic safe. There are generally 2 types of sterilization chemicals. One works great with glass and stainless steel. But lots of plastic is used in brewing. So there is one designed for sterilizing all the plastics.

      If you happen to know the exact name or model it will save me some time, but I’m reading about them now.

      Star-San is the product I use. I'm sure there are othets around, thus just make sure its plastic safe.
      To clean my grey and black tanks( to remove any slime build-up i use 2 methods. 1) i add 1/2 cup of Cascade dishwash powder(dissolve in warm watet) into each tank. Fill with warm water and drive around for an hr. Then dump. 2) when no hot water i use PBW(again from a brew store), dissolve and add into each tank. Drive around and then dump. Both work wondets in keeping both grey and black tank clean.
      Safe travels

      I use Star-San on my fresh water side. I use Cascade or PBW on my grey and black tanks. All products are safe with RV plumbing and septic safe.
