I remember playing the coin op in ‘79 in Hawaii. I was 13. I wish this game had a flicking mechanism... like Subbutteo, Set and Match, Pitch Car, Catacombs, etc... instead of a catapult. The UFO would have to be flat ... and smaller too.
randomly found this today at a walmart. had never even heard of it (or flipships, since that was mentioned here as being the same game), but it was $20 and can be played solo (the biggest thing for me), so i figured what the heck. this video has me a bit more excited to play it for the first time. it's 11PM and i'm about to go to bed, but after watching this i almost wanna stay up and do a run tonight. first video i've seen of yours, but i enjoyed the way you laid out the video and quickly getting through points to cram a bunch into a short amount of time. sub'd for the future! you pointing out you've only won this once, but have still enjoyed it is something i get with a lot of games i have. i might lose FAR more often than i win (looking at you, iron helm/tin helm and field commander rommel and maximum apocalypse!) in some games, but that's never been something that has turned me off. just makes those rare wins feel even better.
I have longed to write a turn-based Space Invaders game you could play on a portable gaming console that I program well on. Wanted to take a look at this to see how a board game is done.
So it is a 1:1 Copy of Flipships (except the launcher). I like the artwork of flipships and the quality of flipships seems to be muuuuuch better. Hmm.. Where do i get that launcher though! ^^
But do you remember the song Space Invaders by Uncle Vic! The only thing this doesn't have are the shields. I have an old MB Zaxxon board game which I think is pretty clever and I'm good at the arcade and ColecoVision game ; ) Looking at this game it seems impossible to hit the mothership 20 times lol If the catapult joystick holds up it could be fun.
So, you said this is basically the same rules as Flip Ships. I don't own either game. But do you actually start with special powers in Flip Ships? Do you still get additional powers in Space Invaders as you take more hits? Also, I saw that in Flip Ships, you get more lunch tokens as the game progresses. Is that the same in Space Invaders?
Had to go back to the Flipships review to see if the “Space Invaders in board game form” association was mentioned. I won’t spoil it, check for yourself.
@@richardmullens4707 I was referring to the deck building one he reviewed. I thought this was the same game but Tom clarified this is a different one. But A few days ago I thought there was a how to play video from the Dice Tower for this one.
I like the art of Flip Ships more. I think maybe they were a little too on the nose with the 8 bit graphic design. But for those that really really want that nostalgia, it appears true to source to me. It's so sad this is coming out alongside a terrible space invaders game. That's bound to cause confusion.
The art is a definite downgrade. It's ok to reinterpret a bit. Hopefully Flipships does not go out of production or I can find a copy once I'm back stateside.
That was one really bored reviewer. That say something about the game. (edit: Meaning that the review doesn't makes this game look good, I didn't mean that the review itself or that the reviewer was bad).
Loved that ending "ooh it landed in the cup holder!"
I already have Flipships, but I really like that launcher. It might be time to test my 3d printing skills and see if I can make one.
If you do, ping this thread. Want one too but don't want the new version. Original art better.
I'm 51 so it's a huge part of my childhood. I backed the other one and wish I hadn't. This looks fun.
Widely available indeed! This was at my local Menards (a midwest based home improvement chain) and was in a discount bin for $3!

That red hat and tie ... are awesome !
Its Fine, Fine, Fine. Everything is Fine!

Someone putting one on Etsy in 5... 4... 3... 2...
It's not a copy, it was made by the same designer

Hey if the bullet rolls into the mouth of the ufo does it count or does it have to go through the top?

I'm so tempted! if only the stock components were better quality. The flipper on it's own is not enough to convince me i tihnk
0:59 And if Tom had reviewed it 10 years ago, you might have seen him actually do those things.
I was going to say I thought I already saw a review of Space Invaders and I remember it was not good.
Yes, wasn't this review by Tom originally posted on the Dice Tower a few days ago?

Well that’s just FINE!!
So it’s flipships?
Pretty much exactly. Different designer too. Seems like a copy.
@@eelexa you mean the same designer. but yeah, if somebody doesn’t watch the review in which this is stated in the first 20 seconds….
Just picked this up at a yard sale for 1$ along with Risk for a 1$ lol

We used to just call it Atari.

1:17 I hate this music. It's way too loud imo.
Total rip of Flipships, wow.
Did your watch the review? It is by the same designer and is a retheme basically.
How do you simultaneously decide to not watch the video and decide to be misinformed?
I'm surprised Funko didn't move on this....because it's just another licensed money-grab game. So much for ingenuity and creativity.
First 😌
I hope the stardom doesn't go to your head. When you get over that, why don't you make a helpful and/or informative comment instead.
@@tempestfury8324 thanks for the time you invested on me. You’re right, but I don’t care... it’s an immortal meme, get over it ✌🏻
