AGREED! I dont watch book videos so i've never seen her channel until i found the video of her talking about the house she bought without seeing! Now im invested!!
I’ve lived in an old house all my life(mine was built in 1900) and here are a couple tips I’ve learned. 1. Always have house shoes because you never know when you’re going to get a splinter(I hate splinters) 2. Be prepared to fix things(as I’m sure you already are 😊). My dad had to learn how to snake our toilet growing up. 3. There will be creaking 4. Always have flashlights/batteries in case of a power outage. 5. Creatures may find their way into your house or attic.
OMG, you were talking about repainting the chairs and I was thinking "mmh pastel blue would be a very ariel-colour", and then you said you were thinking about light blue 😂😂😂😂😂
Good call! We ripped our first house carpet out first day. Second house, my husband wanted to wait and I ended up with a chronic lung infection up coughing all night. I removed the carpet and the cough was better in two days!
Seriously dont know anyone would have not ripped it out by now. Its just getting started. Take down paneling, out with carpets...its not talking and doing.
It's one thing for someone to give you their opinion on what you should/shouldn't do, but when it's strangers on the internet demanding you keep your house a certain way you do have to worry a little. At the end of the day it's your house and you're the one who has to live in it every day, so it should be what you want and your tastes, regardless of what others think.
I know I'm very late to this video, but I owned those same boots (in that same color) and wore them for 10 years before they cracked. They are awesome. They are not even slightly warm, so I also bought the fleece "wellie warmer" socks, which work really well!
You will learn to love Crocs lol. They are just so useful if you live in a house. I have a pair that I use even now for runing outside and taking out trash or stuff like that. Basicaly the same thing as the boots but for less wet days.
I'm unclear on the home inspection (if there is any at all) process upon buying/selling up in Canada but if you haven't had a licensed electrician look over the wiring throughout the house I heartily suggest it. Just because the electric might be working does not mean it's 100% safe. You don't want to do all that work and get it all pretty again only for it to burn down....and it also obviously has fire damage already in that attic space. Overall the bones look pretty good but don't overlook that electrical just bc a light turns on. Especially since it was previously abandoned. Mice and other creatures love to chew wires.
Welcome to the maritimes! We’re neighbours to you over here in PEI. My wife and I recently bought an old farmhouse as well, and are about halfway through the renovations. I understand you’re an Anne of Green Gables fan as well! If you haven’t been to Montgomery’s homestead yet, you should make it a priority once the Atlantic bubble is a thing again. Best of luck with the new spot and keep the vids coming!
Gurl I am hooked, I need more, I need see this ratchet decore become cottage core heaven, glad to see you so happy and content too it’s very wholesome.
Welcome to the old house owner's club! Voice of experience here. 3 things to put on your shopping list before starting DIY renovation projects: 1) a good half-face respirator mask that uses replaceable filters. 2) extra filters 3) upper-face safety protection. In your damp climate (like mine), no telling what lurks behind the fake paneling & in spooky corners. Have fun!
YES GIRL. Remove that panelling! Ours desperately needs gone (they used 4 different kinds of pannelling/not real wood in this place). I can't wait to see the transformation! :D Also, those tables are wonderful! My grandpa had a set just like them!!
I love this series! Despite the fact that I don't own my own home, and don't think that I will any time soon, I love home decor and find home renovation in general is just so fascinating and relaxing. It's amazing to watch something go from less than ideal to beautiful, especially if it's in a matter of an hour and I don't have to spend my own money on it hahahahaha.
I can’t put into words how obsessed I am with this series of Ariel fixing up her house. (My heart does break for the wood paneling though). Can’t wait to see what comes next.
People are so ridiculously precious about wood. It’s your house! It’s your wood! Rip it down! Paint it! I am fully on Team Paint The Wood if it’s not your thing. Light blue will look vintage-y and gorgeous.
I would love to know how your parents felt about moving with you. Obviously they were good with moving with you but were they hesitant about a house that needed work/no heat etc
Haha are you kidding me! I’ve been raised by two amazing people who are always up for a challenge, are creative about solutions, and believe in doing hard work instead of expecting easy comforts. Half the reason I felt okay doing this big thing was knowing they’d help me! My dad installed a pressure tank the other day and my mom just helped me paint my room. They’re awesome.
@@ArielBissett Hi! I have to almost stand up reading (while I wait for a bus or train) in order to stay awake (age 57 ½)----do you have any suggestions? Random electric ⚡⚡⚡ shocks? *More Orwell videos please!
I'm so excited for you...what an incredible journey you're on. We had a similar situation to yours at the end of 2019 -- our landlord decided he wanted the farmhouse we were renting for his migrant workers. We'd lived there for 7 years, had a flock of hens, a huge garden...basically we were emotionally and financially invested. Pffft. 60 days to find somewhere to live. Cue the biggest living nightmare. Long story short - we found a little house to buy and it was the best thing out of the truly worst thing. So your story is hugely relatable! Glad you're getting rid of the paneling -- as a child of the 80s, in Canada, I can tell you, you don't want to be living in the embodiment of all that was wrong with Canadian 80s decor 😆. The Wayne's World Basement aesthetic should never be allowed to return. Also - I'm glad you love your Hunter wellies....but if I could suggest you find your nearest feed store, you'll get far hardier outdoor clothing at far more reasonable prices. 😉
I love when you started showing things that you bought and I understand the boots since you are close to a river, then you pulled out the "UGLY" Crocs! I have been wearing Crocs for over 39 years now, both lined and unlined. I have both real Crocs and FAKE Crocs. They are wonderful for inside and outside. When they get dirty you just throw them in the washer and they come out like new!! Next the 2 chairs that you bought are Plank Bottom chairs which fit perfect in your house. Next are the Half Tables which my Grandmother had in her house and I have them now. Plus when my husbands' parents died and we moved in this house, there were 5 of those tables here. They are perfect to have at the end of chairs or sofas (that's why there are short) and perfect to sit against a wall. Your microwave is to die for. It's just too cute! I am loving your videos!!!
What are your flood risks? Do you need to look at grading soil away from house, retention walls etc. water is the enemy of a house. Never put off water which sneaks into your house. Gutters are also really important. Momma bear here. So happy to be in this with you!
When you tear down the paneling you’ll be able to see any problems hidden in the walls, which is a good thing. Surely there will be some problems but hopefully not many. It’s always better to know. Best wishes.
Omg, could we get a outside garden tour if you develop one on your land? That be so cool, like vegetables and a small section for like “fae folk”, aw that be so cute!!
I’m very new too this channel and already in love, and as a Michigander who now lives in North Carolina, hearing “aboot” is so comforting hahah makes miss home and Canadian neighbors ☺️
As someone who also bought her first house last fall, this video brings me so much joy. The little things and the happiness and all the pieces--It's awesome to watch you experience it
OMG, just found your channel! You remind me of my granddaughter, who is just as enthusiastic! Love to see young people stepping out and up🤗 . Best of luck😉
So fun to watch your house bloom! You're approaching it the right way, priorities but with some special things mixed in that make the journey more enjoyable! Renovation is about having a plan, looking for deals, and flexing your budget by saving on things that don't matter as much so you can splurge a bit on things that do!
You might want to build a mudroom in the unfinished extention. If you plan on getting a dog then remember to tile (non slip) the mud room and add a shower to wash the dog!
We just bought a house too and the downstairs has wood paneling. I loathe it! My husband LOVES it! Your house is over 150yr old. The veneer paneling was a 70’s thing. In the spirit of restoration you’ve expressed before, I support you ditching the panel wall coverings. Not that you need any of our approval, lol.
I can't imagine being stuck in quarrentine in such an empty home. Sounds like a long, indoor camping experience. I bet you gained a new appreciation for appliances that we generally take for granted.
I have to admit I haven’t watched your channel or any other booktubers much lately. But I never unsubscribed bc I enjoyed checking in every once in a while to see what you’ve been up to. I am thrilled that you’re starting this series bc I love anything related to home owning and renovations. You are living my dream and I am so excited to go on this journey with you! Congrats, Ariel😁
I've been following Ariel for so long and the coolest thing to happen so far was realizing we have the same favorite poetry collection. I didn't even hear it from her! Crazy
You can also spray your shoes and soak your clothes in premethin and lay them to dry. The clothes last a handful of washes. And ticks and most bugs landing on your clothes will die and fall right off.
When I moved across the country before my boyfriend and all our furniture, I spent three weeks living without a chair (or any other furniture). OMG CHAIRS ARE INCREDIBLE I LOVE CHAIRS. TRUE HOUSEHOLD MVP
Ripping out carpet is actually really easy. All you need is a box cutter, a pry-bar, and brute strength. It'll probably take no more than a half hour to rip it out of a normal sized room. Just cut it into manageable pieces and pull. That being said, then you have to deal with whatever subflooring is underneath. Best case scenario, you have real hardwood floors underneath that just needs TLC. Worst case, it's plywood (or concrete like in my house). Laying laminate flooring (clicks together) is easy enough, just make sure you use the self-leveling "stuff" (for lack of a better term) underneath.
Oh ya, this video reminded me of when I moved to Halifax from Alberta in January. No snow, and I thought - awesome!! But then the blizzards started and, holy cow!! So much heavy, wet snow. I really hope for a gentler winter for you in your first winter in the maritimes!!
I am so so so glad you bought this house! Not only does it selfishly align with my home renovation mood right now, I'm also just so glad you and your family now have a permanent and safe place to call home! Please keep the videos coming and please keep those sponsorships coming too (love that you have this ability to make your sudden move more affordable!) I'm looking into buying a house with my siblings in the next year. We have been life long renters and are trying to take the plunge of learning about real estate and the actual home owner process. Thanks for giving me motivation!
I spent hours the other day looking at houses on the internet because of your last video. I’m only 22 and I haven’t even graduated college so I’m so far away from even buying my own house! 🤣
@@ArielBissett I get that and it's totally find if you don't want to. Anyway your house is already amazing in itself. I really like old houses like yours. I live in France and we do not have the same kind of old houses.
Welcome to the East Coast, you'll love it here! My husband and I just moved here 1.5 yrs ago from Ontario and we love it! We also bought a fixer-upper on 5.5 acres and we're enjoying putting our stamp on things. The price of houses is what sent us out this way. You''ll find the people are so friendly and super helpful when you need a hand. Have fun getting to know your place and settling in.
New to your channel. I love your quirkiness. Your house is amazing. I think it's amazing you are going for restoration as opposed to renovation. Get that ugly paneling down! That fireplace is to die for. Those wooden floors long to breath. That window above your front door and those eves....I'm in love.
When my husband and I bought our place the first thing we bought was a big Christmas tree. I came home one day from work with it. I stopped by a store by my work and surprised my hubby with it. I had always wanted one. And now I have one and 8 years later we are still using it.
I love the podcast and book content but totally here for the house content as well. I am 37, finally have gathered enough for a downpayment for a tiny apartment, so need to learn all things house renovation, and I love learning with someone who is also learning :) Good luck and keep the videos coming!
Good on you!! My partner and I are moving to N S from BC in June, for the same reasons. I can totally relate to the anguish you felt over the housing situation in BC. It seems like a lot of younger folks are leaving BC for the greener pastures of the maritimes,we will be watching your videos and dreaming of or future out east!
Yes! Rip out the wood. You go girl, it’s about what YOU want to do with YOUR house... (P.s. I hate wood paneling. It always looks weird to me but my opinion has no bearing on your decisions)...👍🏻
I loved this haul of necessity rather than "I like this, I love that, so cute!" You're like "I NEED this. We need this. This is how I will use it. Also, SO CUTE!"
Take the fake wood paneling down as soon as you afford it. It is SOOOO flammable! Not to mention the toxic off gassing when it does burn! First you do electrical then plumbing! Good luck - and buy insulation by the truck load! You won’t have any of R value.
I have a YT suggestion for you, a channel called Farmhouse Vernacular. They are redoing an old house... room by room, which I think would be a good option for you. Also good discussions about colours and furniture,, right up your alley !
Hi, I'm a new subscriber! I'm 25, Canadian, and I just bought my first home too so I'm super pumped for this series. Your whole channel aesthetic is great and I look forward to seeing how you decorate your home. Happy New Year!
That is exactly how I felt about my LL Bean fleece & my duck boots, omg 😂 I went to the outlet when we visited Maine this fall and I got a men’s fleece because it was in the most perfect shades of mossy green... I have lived in it all winter! It has a half zip, it has a kangaroo pouch on the front for my phone and my keys... and my duckie boots are great for the rainy wet winter we are having and the spring which will undoubtedly follow 😆 Congratulations on your new microwave, and rain boots, and all the new little things that bring you joy!!

I spent hours the other day looking at houses on the internet because of your last video. I’m only 22 and I haven’t even graduated college so I’m so far away from even buying my own house! 🤣
Girl same😂🥺
So nice !
Do you plan to show your "muddy land" ? because I would love to watch that ^-^
Yes!! I just want to slowly show different projects and am always a bit hesitant about showing the outside in case people track me down haha
I love how very wise you are...keeping with the integrity of house...very smart!!!🧡
That microwave is so beautiful 🥺🥺🥺
I love this!! I can't wait to see more from your house! And oh my god, that is the most beautiful microwave and toaster, wow.
New to your channel. I love your quirkiness. Your house is amazing. I think it's amazing you are going for restoration as opposed to renovation. Get that ugly paneling down! That fireplace is to die for. Those wooden floors long to breath. That window above your front door and those eves....I'm in love.
i'm actually really excited to watch these renovation videos, it will be fun to watch everything slowly come together
As a regular booktube viewer and Nova Scotian, this East Coast representation is awesome! Loving these home reno videos as well!
When are you guys going start restoring? I wouldnt be able to live in without doing kitchen and baths. Floors, paints knock down walls lets go!
I LOVE your micro and fridge color!
Pull up the carpet already!! It will make it a huge diffrence!! I pulled mine up weeks before I moved it...it's easy!
Ooh, that fireplace 👌🏻 Those laundry machines are wonderful too!
I’m so excited for this series!!! That fireplace is so gorgeous
I am so very excited for all the house content!!!
Love the matching micro-wave & toaster ( & fridge ).😊💙
Yes! Rip out the wood. You go girl, it’s about what YOU want to do with YOUR house... (P.s. I hate wood paneling. It always looks weird to me but my opinion has no bearing on your decisions)...👍🏻
Ariel's house is going to become a dream animal crossing home
Cant see a close up of your chairs, but I love the primitive paint on them! Vintage shabby chic fit a vintage house. 🤷♀️
Omg I am a 74 year old version of your kind of nerdiness. What a find you are! I’ll be checking in on ll the time. Good luck with your new house!
I didn’t know there were so many wood panel stans out there 😂
I have a YT suggestion for you, a channel called Farmhouse Vernacular.
