My mother did not play the"Why?" game with any of her children. When she assigned us chores, all we could say was "Yes, ma'am," and get them chores done. "Why?" wasn't even part of our vocabulary. All "Why?" did was get you smacked in the mouth along with "That's why."

When my daughter was growing up, I made sure to explain that since she wasn't paying rent, she had a responsibility as a member of the household to help it stay together by mowing the lawn on occasion, washing dishes Tuesdays and Thursdays, etc. I did tell her that she could ask questions about things that didn't make sense or didn't understand, but that chores were not a questionable option. She's finishing college, still does the Tuesdays/Thursdays dishes, and has never been an issue with me, her teachers, or any other adults.

I'm 34 years old. I've experienced some of what many here are saying about not asking why...Asking why should not be considered disrespect. It's the when and how you ask why. Here's a different perspective. Do you know how many generations of families do things with no logical reason why they do things because they never asked why? Grandparents and parents will have the next generation of their family following traits and habits with no explanation. Think of superstitions...step on a Crack you will break your mamas back. You ask your Grandparents why you can't step on a crack they will look at it as disrespect instead of reflecting on it and just saying I don't know why you shouldn't say that. That's one of a lifetime of examples.

We raised our children “you can say anything you want as long as it’s respectful “. Now my 37yrs old daughter has 3 children with her husband. A 13yr old autistic son, a 9yr old son, and a 3yr old son. When her 9yr old was 3, I told her he needed guidance to what was respectful and what wasn’t. I instructed him and disciplined him, as I did, his mother and his uncle. She took the explaining route. Now his 9, and she FaceTimes me (they live in another state), to talk to him when he’s being disrespectful. I don’t have that problem with him. Shuler is right. These kids are going to go out into the world one day, it’s not going to be pretty. And for Black kids, you don’t have the privilege like white children to act disrespectful in certain situations. Once I had to tell my boss off, without raising my voice, without cursing, but getting my point across. I gave him no reason to write me up or fire me, and he respected me from then on. My actions came from the way I was raised.
    Y’all setting these kids up.

When I was little we (my brother and sister) took turns washing dishes and we would do it on a weekly basic. On my week I had just finished cleaning the kitchen when my brother (baby brother) decides to make him some French fries. He peeled the potato, put the grease in the smallest pot we had, drop the wet potatoes in and grease spattered everywhere. I got so mad at him I took the broom handle and busted him upside the head, my mom came in and wanted to know what the commotion was all about and I told her what happened. My brother was over there rubbing his head thought tears would get to her heart and get me in trouble, but she looked at him and the mess he created and told him he would have to clean the kitchen for the next 2 weeks. He had the audacity to ask why, and I’m not kidding, she turned her neck in slow motion, we knew what that meant, and he immediately apologized to me and said yes ma’am to her. O, the good ole days😅😅😅

Context matters. My mother was a strong disciplinarian, meaning that fresh beatings were always on the menu. She gave me discipline without explaining the ultimate messaging. I grew up hating my mother instead of recognizing that she was preventing my environment from determining my future. I grew up to become a Vet and an attorney. I too handed out fresh discipline to my twin sons when they were younger. BUT, I explained why I was doing it and what behavior was needed to keep them on the right patch. You can have a respectful conversation with your kids without making them fearful of asking why/understanding why things are happening to them and without them being insubordinate. They needs those skills, too.

I grew up in the 70's and I'm the youngest of 4. We were allowed to have conversations with our parents and ask questions as long as we were respectful. This did not mean we questioned everything we were told to do. I know this taught me how to be a leader and question things if needed. I also believe this taught me how not to fall for anything. This is my perspective based on how I was raised. Not looking for anyone's approval just giving my perspective. Peace, Love, Joy and blessings to you all💖

The way your parent treat you is the way you learn how to be loved. That to me is the most important part of parenting. My dad taught me to walk on egg shells and it's taking a long time to try to unlearn what he taught. Patents need to teach more instead of always getting their pride and ego involved. I asked why all the time when I was very young bc I wanted to understand everything. Shutting down the why child is telling them to stop being curious and stop trying to understand. And you're not wrong at all about needing to teach them if you ask the wrong question at the wrong time you might get you butt handed to you rearranged.😂 facts about real world vs rich world!!

Children shouldn't disrespect their parents, but being allowed to ask why is understandable.
That's why people grow up now not knowing anything, because parents don't want to explain themselves.. but most of the time it's because they don't have the answers and they don't wanna look stupid
I tell my children anything they wanna know and I don't sugar coat anything. Why would I send my children out into the world blind?

    • @devbyrd6127

I agree! A lot of kids nowadays don’t know the difference because their parents classify anything as disrespectful which in turn makes their emotions hard to handle for themselves and everyone else. You can’t expect a child to be properly upright in the world if you don’t teach them.
