Lyrics:
[Verse 1]
Lay, lady, lay
Lay across my big brass bed
Lay, lady, lay
Lay across my big brass bed
Whatever colors you have in your mind
I’ll show them to you and you’ll see them shine
[Verse 2]
Lay, lady, lay
Lay across my big brass bed
Stay, lady, stay
Stay with your man awhile
Until the break of day, let me see ya' make him smile
His clothes are dirty but his, his hands are clean
And you’re the best thing that he’s ever seen
[Verse 3]
Stay, lady, stay
Stay with your man awhile
Why wait any longer for the world to begin
You can have your cake and eat it too
Why wait any longer for the one you love
When he’s standing in front of you
[Verse 4]
Lay, lady, lay
Lay across my big brass bed
Stay, lady, stay
Stay while the night is still ahead
I long to see you in the morning light
I long to reach for you in the night
Stay, lady, stay
Stay while the night is still ahead

Listening in 2024. I’m 58 years old and soon to be 59. I remember my dad listening to this when I was very young and I hated it. But now I love it. it’s been in my playlist for nine months now. It really represents what somebody wants at their core.
Listening, by Brazil - May 2024 - soon to be 57 yo
I woke up with this song stuck in my head.
I never knew that this song was sung by Bob Dylan 😮❤ Listening in 2024!!!
😃😀
i have been listening to this a lot lately, so simple and beautiful.
A beautiful, masculine, sweet, heart felt song.
My favorite ❤❤❤ I’m 65 I love Bob Dylan… I named my son Dylan
Who's still listening to this masterpiece right now?!

Still loving you in 2024 ❤
Eu também 😔😔
I’m in 2023. And it’s just as strong now as it was in 1969.
Easily....one of the Classic's of All-Time.
Bob dylan lived across the street from us when i was just 5 yrs old ❤

Amen, to that.

Bob Dylan is absolutely Legendary Period!!!! 💯💯💯👍🙏
Married to my fine lady for 52 years. This is our song!!!
epic
❤ Lucky ones! God bless your love. 🙏
Awesome!!!!!
Parabéns 😮😮😮
It's our song too. Came on every time we were together in a cafe and, no, neither one of us had put it on the jukebox. Love the song!
Its amazing how faded memories suddenly come to life when you hear an old favorite song. Your brain is like a hard drive of everything thats ever happened to you.
So true. It was 1973 74 walking on the Boardwalk in Atlantic City and they were playing this song a lot that summer.
Absolutely 👍🏻
Not like; your brain IS a hard drive of everything that's ever happened to you.
I dig a lot of Kenny Rodger’s songs also from that era. Ruby comes to mind.
yeah, a hard drive with really shitty data retrieval. i really wish nature would have done a better job designing (evolving) that part.
One of the most beautiful love songs which brings back so many memories now that I'm 75 !!!
"Whatever colors you have in your mind, I'll show them to you, and you see them shine,"
Are you kidding me? That line has to be one of the best this man has ever penned.
Listen to the albums "Blood on the Tracks" and "Desire", and others of his. So many great lines.
@vincett… the lyrics have got to be the sensuous ever written: whatever colours you have in your mind…being intimate with a woman in bed wanting to make her happy, you would want to show all the colours of ecstasy ❤ no one, but no one compares to Dylan 🙏🏾
You might be right.
If ever there was a song to capture the sounds and mood of the 1960’s, this is it. I know, I was there.
“His clothes are dirty but his hands are clean, and you’re the best thing that he’s ever seen” is quite possible the best line ever written…
His greatest line was, “ I gave her my heart, but she wanted my soul” 😂😂😂
My vote is for he was brutally handsome and she was terminally pretty....Eagles life in fast lane lol
Describes the husband.
Or "Well the last thing i remember before i stripped and kneeled was that trainload of fools bogged down in a magnetic field".
Maybe?🤔🎵
This was one of my sister’s songs that she played so often…..reminds me of her, she would have been 80 this month of May 😞💗
This song played a big role in helping me make one of the most important decisions in my life. I had been single for nearly 20 years after a very nasty divorce. I had 3 children to raise and they too had been traumatized by their father leaving, so I dedicated myself to being a full-time mom. After they were all grown, I decided it was time for me. I jumped into the dating pool and flailed around a couple of times, but then, quite unexpectedly, I met a kind, caring, heartbroken widower. All the boxes checked for us and we hit it off immediately. Guess who got scared after a couple of weeks? Yep. Me! So, I told him I needed to step back a bit and figure out if this was the direction I wanted to go or not. After a painful couple of weeks filled with uncertainty, this song, Lay Lady Lay, came on the radio. I was literally on my kitchen floor doing some heavy duty scrubbing when these lyrics, I'd heard many times before, suddenly seemed like I was hearing them for the first time and that they were for ME --- "Why wait any longer for the world to begin
You can have your cake and eat it too
Why wait any longer for the one you love
When he's standing in front of you."
That was it! I knew from that very second that I was almost throwing away the love of my life. Thankfully, he had been patiently waiting for me to figure out what I wanted. He was there with open arms ---- and has been for the last 7 years. We were both married months before our 60th birthdays and I could not be happier. This song was our first dance at our wedding. Thanks Mr. Dylan. You saved me.
good on you ER it must have been very hard for you .Well done.
What what a wonderful story! Stay in love both of you!
fabulous to read that. Dylan & Beatles, gets no better, eleanor.
Lovely story Eleanor. Blessings
The first three times that I read your comment, it was so moving and so sweet that it made me cry tears of joy for you! I'm very happy for you.

Close, came out in 1969. I was 15 and we boys thought ohh la la.
What a love song the adoration for that lady is limitless
One of the most beautiful album covers of all time. Just Bob with his guitar tipping his hat and smiling at you.
Love his vocals in this one, so different than the rest
And his E string coiled.

Me in 2024 I remember when this song was new and loved it back then. One of Dylan's best I think.
believe it or not, the biggest hit single of his entire career....
Sometimes you come to TH-cam for the music but you stay for the comments, such meaningful stories here, a time capsule of people's lives. I wish you all joy and that your pain be soothed, I didn't know your loved ones but the love you have for them while they were here is so touching.

When music was music - depth, rich tones, great lyrics. It belongs in a "Hall of Fame of Great Music."
My partner who is oblivious to music generally just came in as I'm playing this and said "His best song ever". Well, he could be right on this one!
100% true
Bob Dylan - technically - has a very average voice. But nobody could sing sing this better, It's a masterpiece.

Yes man, wonderful song
My husband passed away at age 30, second tour in Iraq. I’ve been single for 8 years. I recently met a really respectful and sweet man. We had our first real date last night but it wasn’t the first time we have spent time together talking. We spent time at his house talking last night and I felt really comfortable around him, which is huge bc I’ve been alone for so long. It was late and he asked me if I wanted to stay over, just to sleep bc it’s a long drive home. We held each other all night, nothing more, but it was amazing and brought me to this song. I think this could be real and that scares the hell out of me. Perfect bc it was innocent. I just feel this is right and my husband would’ve wanted me to be happy. I hope everyone listening has found happiness bc we all deserve it.
Awe yes he would..I too lost the love of my life..
Good luck sending you lots of love ...
This gives me hope that ill find someone..ive been single for 10 years..go for it, don't be afraid, live your life and be happy :)..Good luck!
You can't live in the past, nor can you change it. But that doesn't mean you have to forget it, either. Your experiences make you who you are. Just ride the rapids and do what makes you happy. Nothing wrong with that. I'm sure your late husband would tell you the same thing.
Reba, I'm so sorry for your loss! Your husband has paid such a high price on the altar of freedom. May we never forget his loving generous spirit !
PS, If I can speak for your late husband, As much as he 💕 loved you, he would want you to be happy! As my late grandfather would tell us in times of pain and sorrow, We have to keep breathing, keep moving, live in a way that would make them proud! So live life to the fullest !
This is beyond iconic! Unprecedented then and now! 🙌🤍
I was just laying her awake in the middle of the night when this song came to mind.,I was just a teen when it came out.At 70 the words have even more meaning,❤️
This song just never grows old . So intriguing. It's like a breath of fresh air.

A great country album by a folk singer
Still listening and still loving (2022) such happy memories especially Amsterdam 1981!
Melody, lyrics and performance are as close to perfection as can be. Even if he'd written nothing else, Dylan would deserve our gratitude for this wonderful piece.
His best.
Absolutely 🤗
OMG do you know how many of the Rolling Stone Top 15 songs of all time were written by Dylan. Dylan, sold his soul to the devil for all of the incredible songs he's written. I even love most of his new stuff as well as all of our iconic 60's anthems.
Couldn't agree more... a true masterpiece!
Totally Agree.
It's worth being older now, to have been young then.
I completely agree. I wouldn't have missed our generation for anything. I should add that this may very well be one of the most poignant and profound comments I've ever read on You Tube, and I'm a writer. Wonderful.

Definitely listening in 2023. I remember this song when i was a 4 year old boy in 1969. I just recall it making me feel great but not sure why. Still get chills listening to it today.
This brings me back to the summer of 1969, One hot muggy summer night I woke up around 2:00 a.m. It was a full moon and I heard this song playing on the radio in my brothers' room next to mine, the song so beautiful and haunting set a mood I will never forget. Every time I hear this song it brings me back to that night when I was very young and full of hope.
That is a beautiful anecdote
Had been home about a year from the military and a friend played this for me and I borrowed it when I took it back it was in bad shape drinks spilled ect. He never said a word...Thanks Miguel ! ol man way down in TX JD GREAT SONG AND LP. THANK YOU AGAIN FOR POSTING!

@@politecat4236 If you don't know it, then how ever can it be; I hear you say.
I was born in late 1968 and my parents met in College and graduated in 65', (In the midwest), so they were more folk than hippie generation. My dad liked and had Dylan albums, and also stranger singer song writers like Loudon Wainwright, early Jerry Jeff Walker etc. As a rocknroll loving kid in the 70s I wished they were more into the harder music so I'd have a better selection of their albums to choose from, but now at 53, and after really delving into rocks history on youtube since 2008, I've realized how important (like them or not) every great artist was from Elvis Presley to Elvis Costello in that mind-blowingly great 25 year musical era from 1955 to 1980, and Bob Dylans role in music and lyrics you can't say enough about. Being able to write a song like Hard Rain at 21 in 1962, when you grew up in a small town in Minnesota is really unbelievable, and then backing that up with all the other great songs he wrote throughout the 1960s, definitely makes him one of the most important artists of all time!
En 1969 , immense succès en boîte ..et à la radio..j'adore ce morceau , parfait pour un slow.. jolie musique et jolie voix ..sublime !

I remember hearing this song on the radio in 1969 in my Dad's new Galaxie 500. We were going to see my Grandma in Seattle. it was a beautiful spring day (a Saturday I believe) and we were all dressed up for a super lunch! I had a brand new Hotwheels car too. I miss those days so much and this song brings it all rushing back.
Beautiful story!

One of the most sensual songs I've ever heard, period 😊
We graduated from high school (in L.A. California) in 1969. My friend George (gone for over 10 years now) went to Malibu for an early morning breakfast before hitting the beach. I remember being in the cafe and thinking this is the last time we'll be in this part of our life, before college (or career), and without the income and subsequent debts that young people experience. I knew this was special, but didn't know why at the time. Bless you George, for the times we had through high school, and the feelings of being on this world at this time and at this maturity level. The jukebox song we played put it all into perspective, so thank you Bob Dylan for allowing me to reminisce about a specific time in my life, before major love relationships, income and debt levels and overall moving into the next phase of our existence into this world. Happy new (future) years to all the human race if looks into one human's comments. What a world.

Bob Dylan was born in Duluth, Minnesota back in '41, then raised in Hibbing, MN after he was 6 years old. He's still living today.

Dylan’s voice has me in a trance every-time I listen to this. Such a great song
In 1971 i sat look8ng out the window of my kindergarten class singing, to myself, every word of the entire Nashville Skyline album!!! At age 21 i saw Dylan backed up by the Grateful Dead. WOW!!! HE IS A TIMELESS MASTER

Hello dear, it’s nice meeting you on here
I was in Viet Nam when this song came out. Dylan was always a favorite of mine with his song writing, poetic expression and talent. People would always say his voice sucked but I never agreed. He had a style that lived on through the ages as we all see now. He paved the way for so many other bands through the years. My brothers and myself have always talked and felt we were so lucky to have been part of this generation the likes of which will probably never be seen again.
Thank you for your service! I agree with you!
Mr. Silva . . I appreciate your service to our country. My heart goes out to all those men & women who sacrificed their souls for us. I was born in 1957 (8th of 10 kids). Absolutley love this wee song 👌
Hello dear, it’s nice meeting you on here.
Don't know why, this song just came into my head. It has been decades since I have listened to this. Memory is such a funny thing.
My son was recently singing this song while walking around the house, I asked him where he knew it from. He never listens to my old records but I have quite a collection. Turns out he has his friends over every odd weekend to drink beers and listen to music - MY music - while I work the night shift. I thought he was having a girlfriend, was I wrong. :)
That's why I love youtube, to read such lovely comment
Does it really matter if he prefers to have sex with a man instead of a women? It is such a small part of what makes up a human being. Who the hell cares.? He may not give you grandchildren but there are no guarantees in life.
@Dmitry The Kebob Remover Oh My God what have I done ?? I missed it by a mile. She wasn't even talking about what I thought she was talking about. I'm sorry about this and I feel so stupid.

Why not make her yours???
Change that friend status...you can do it...
Starting with making sure she hears Your dedication of THIS song to Her! : )
I tried doing that but she's looking to either get married or just have children. I'm not looking for either one of those. Also she's 29 and I'm 57. She was honest with me and told me I'm too old for her. It bothered me , but she was right and at least she was honest with me.
