I'd definitely be interested in a 'try a chapter' video. Sounds like a good way to see if you vibe with the writing and if it grabs your attention.

I would love to see a 'read or unhaul challenge' and/or a 'try a chapter' style challenge with your stacks of unsure books!! There are lots of books on my TBR there so I would really love to get your opinion to see which I should pick up next. Especially excited to hear about A Memory Called Empire as I've heard incredible things.

I agree! A ‘try a chapter’ challenge would be fun to watch :)

You're so right, I need to get back to reading those 'unsure' books rather than just having them sit on my shelf indefinitely!!

I’d love to see a ‘try a chapter’ video of the books you’re unsure about

I'd love a video about where you talk about the poetry you've read and what you'd recommend. As a poet, I love hearing what kind of poetry other people are reading, and I'd especially love to hear about Australian poets too!

I don’t read a lot of poetry, so I don’t know that I have an entire videos worth of opinions! But I have loved Maxine Beneba Clarke, Tony Birch, Mohammed El-Kurd… off the top of my head :)

I love the try a chapter idea. That would make some great videos.

ooh, a memory called empire, love it. I would call it sci fi more than fantasy.

I think as a writer the night circus is useful to keep for analysis of beautiful image making with words but also how an author can lose track of plot threads

Yes, the atmosphere is always lovely… but that’s about it! 🥲

From your dress like your books video, I grabbed The Ministry of Time in audio. I’m about 20 minutes in and I like it so far. I’m slow when it comes to audio because they are the things I listen to when I’m doing chores.

"He Who Drowned the World" includes a brief overview of where the previous book left the main characters; it does pick up right where the first left off, but it also gives a decent reminder of where that was. I just read "Devil in a Blue Dress" and liked it -- there is a film (I haven't seen); it reads (to me) a lot like period/historical fiction with a focus on racism in US context at that time -- I have no clue if you'd like it. I feel like our tastes converge and diverge in ways that surprise me at times! 🤣 I adored "She Who Became the Sun" and also loved "The Jasmine Throne" AND also "City of Brass." In your stack.... I would guess that you probably won't be into "Rosewater;" the world is interesting but the characters weren't my favourite. "The Final Strife" I'm not sure (I didn't actively dislike it but I also feel it skews younger than it's marketed), and "A Memory Called Empire" I really loved but I'm not sure what you'd think. "The Night Circus" was a 'meh' for me.

Oooh thank you so much - I knew you’d come through with the info I needed! I will endeavour to work up the gumption to get to book two!
And honestly, I’m sometimes confused about my own tastes 😂

Now that we finally have unpacked all our books (I think???) I am desperate to organise them. My main problem is my partner keeps putting snacks in front of them. Our house is not well organised. Ok, fine, not even slightly. I just found a stack of books hiding behind some video games. I pulled out some as I was unpacking but I don't think there's others I'll get rid of.

I honestly think you should give Half a Soul a fair shake. It definitely has a lot of fluffy scenes, but it also has some brilliant commentary on disability, class, and abuse. I don’t really think of it as romantasy-the romance is prominent, but it’s really not the main point of the book.

My book club did The Night Circus and I DNFed it. Like you, I go through a decent chunk of it in the beginning. The writing was decent, but I got bored and just didn’t care anymore.

Yeah, I’m thinking Erin Morgenstern might not be the author for me!

Lol. I hated The Starless Sea as well.
And i tried to read The Night Circus too and just couldn't get into it. I definitely think that author isn't for me.
