Using Kali stick skills for "non lethal" self-defense

  • This video is in response to a question I saw posted on a Kali Center video asking, "how to use Kali stick fighting in a non-lethal manner" and as more as a deterrence.
I believe every trained martial artist should have a versatile skill set and not only focus on one level of force response. This includes the use of a weapon.
How you use it and what targets you attack will dictate the level of lethality in your use of an impact weapon. Practicing hitting the limbs with quick snappy strikes will be the best for using the impact weapon to deter aggressors without doing massive damage.
I like my short, iron wood baton one of my police buddies gave me for this type of application. It's light but strong enough to inflict damage to any weapon holding menace.
The other reality of fighting with any weapon is you need to have a well rounded fighting skill set and not only rely on your weapon.

Loved this material Guro Bob. Thanks for teaching a non-lethal self defense mindset that’s grounded in practical reality. Good inspiration for an action scene I’m writing lately. I’ll have to get one of those batons, and check out Morrison’s videos. Low bows :)

Hey SIMA, any tips on where I can get one of these slightly-edged batons? I see rounded 'tire knockers' when I search, but not much comes up for this specific self-defense intent.

Hey Geo! Unfortunately, that baton, along with many other toys a have accumulated, is a custom job made by a retired police officer who used to sell them at seminars. Might have to commission a good woodworker to make you one. Sorry I can't be more help!

Do tire knockers work with these techniques? If not, is there a way you could apply it? Nonlethal techniques are paramount imho.

As Kali practitioners, we consider the attributes of the weapon and then adapt the technique to that specific tool. depending on the weight, the tire knocker seems like a perfect weapon of opportunity. Like any armed consideration though, you need to develop good all around fighting skills to support the weapon of choice. Hope that helps!

Are lobtiks even possible with that short of a stick?

Generally speaking I like what you are doing. I was negative on one video. I started my FMA training in 1971, in NYC.

Those sticks are misleading, they can certainly go for lethal if they want.
