    My favourite Harley Race story was that he was on the road with another wrestler, and they stopped at a diner to get something to eat. A guy came in with a gun and demanded everyone's wallets and watches, etc. Harley continues eating. The gunman demands Harley hand over his money. Harley without looking at the gunman said "Fuck Off." The gunman demanded again and Harley stood up, grabbed the gun before pulling out his own and said, "I said Fuck Off!!" The guy ran out so fast.

      He also knocked a guy out for hitting a girl then ended up getting st@bbed by the man's friend, there's a newspaper article about it and he was like 20/21 when this happened. Also the story of him slapping Jumbo Tsuruta for suplexing Flair multiple times, Jumbo just accepted it and he wasn't no slouch as he was a Greco Roman Wrestling Olympian!

    I'm currently caring for my 103 year old WWII veteran grandfather. It is a true honor and a privilege to help provide home hospice along with family support for such a great man. This is not a knock against the current generations because I am nearly 41 years old myself and among you, but my grandfather's generation was just built with a different mindset in an entirely different era of time. They simply don't build men like him anymore and it is a stark realization in real time. We have become distracted by the trivial and that is why a man like Harley Race wouldn't be able to work in today's wrestling format. That need for instant gratification is a shame because great things take time to develop and it only hurts the end product.

      Your grandfather sounds like an incredible man, I’m sure when he was over in Europe or the Pacific he never thought he’d see 103. We are the same age & my grandfather is 90. He’s a former USMC & professional boxer. You’re absolutely correct the men of their day were far tougher & just a different breed. Respect to you for caring for your grandpa, I am sure he greatly appreciates it & you’ll be happy you spent this time with him.

    I think Jim Cornette answered this question the best. He was asked who would walk out of a bar fight - Haku, Dr Death, Bruiser Brody, or Harley? He said Doc could stretch anybody but Haku would eat your eyeball and Brody was a wildcard etc. When he’s done talking the interviewer says what about Harley? Cornette says “Harley would look around, assess the situation quickly, pull out his pistol, shoot the other 3 in the head, abd then calmly walk outside to smoke a cigarette.

I met him at a carnival in SC along with the R&R Express, Baby Doll, one of the Bushwackers and Jimmy Valiant (who was bullying my then 8-year-old kid to buy a $10 bandana. Harley reminded me of my grandfather who worked on farm and in old school oilfield on those oil rigs. Old man strength is REAL and they will humble you quick. I will never forget the day some buddies and i were lifting weights on one of those nautilus plate benchpress machines i had just gotten and it went up to 270lbs. We mightve been in 5th grade because we were trying to get strong for our first year of football so we slide the pin in on 270 just to see if we could budge it and nothing. My grandfather walks by and wants to have a go and he pressed it with one arm lol.

If Gunther works today why wouldn’t Harley race? They are both very similar in a few ways and sure they are different in others but Harley race knows how to get heat on himself and always puts on a great match so that’s kind of how I personally think about it.

    Hope I'm not late to this! I've been a huge Undertaker fan since the early 90s. More of a fan of him than guys like Hogan. I went to WrestleMania 24 and watched The Undertaker beat Edge for the World Heavyweight Championship. Also back in toe 90s, I saw the Undertaker clean house on the Nation of Domination at a house show in San Diego, I think in 1994 or 1995!
    I also got to meet Kane in San Diego at a meet & greet at Best Buy in 2005 before Taboo Tuesday, where he signed an old WWE magazine with the Brothers of Destruction holding sledgehammers on the cover!
    My birthday comes up on September 30th, and I would be so stoked to win the Urn, because I never got to meet The Undertaker while he was active, and this would be THE wrestling treasure for me!

    As far as Harley being able to wrestle in modem era the matches are just different too u don’t see crazy hardcore matches or I quit matches to where u really had to show how tough u are the writer and cameras can get u over way more now than ever…with that being said, them old school guys like Harley n Haku, those the type of people u want as back up or just as a friend

      I think if we are talking pre 1995, then pretty much everyone could. Spivey, Rude, etc are obvious, but even guys like Martel, Zenk, etc. Come the mid 1990s though, we start getting the Christopher Daniels of the world becoming wrestlers, and far less of the Dick Slater types.

      @@handsolo1209Hogan couldn’t whip cream. Savage wasn’t known for being a tough nut. I think guys like Boss man, Earthquake, Typhoon, Andre and Brutus kept Hogan safe. The golden goose couldn’t be harmed as it would harm those guys making money

      @@AlanJOHNSTONE-u1w Yes, a 6'6", 300lbs guy who had his ankle broken, and still came back and went through actual training and not a "wrestling school" couldn't "whip cream". I guess he knocked Inoki out with a whisk...
      EVERYONE who broke in prior to the late 1980s/early 1990s was tough. You didn't even make it past the "try out" in those days unless you were.

      @@handsolo1209 Hogans size probably helped. He wasn’t known as a tough guy. Was quite sneaky backstage with under hand politics and stuff. He wouldn’t work with the legit hard guys as they worked stiff. He was known for being quite a shit bag of a guy

    • @handsolo1209
      @handsolo1209 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@AlanJOHNSTONE-u1w I think you are falling in to the trap of only thinking that the bullies and drunks were tough. Everyone was tough back then. Of course there was a pecking order of guys not to mess with under any circumstances, but in reality everybody was a "someone to mess with". Back in the day, wrestling did not attract models, Hollywood wannabes or people who could have been PhDs, but it was their "dream" to be a WWE "superstar". It attracted freaks, dropouts, extreme poverty and nutcases. They wouldn't even let you in unless you could take care of yourself. We hear about the nutjobs like Haku, Steiners, etc, but just because we don't hear anything about guys like Hogan, Sting, Steamboat, etc doesn't mean that they were wimps. They just weren't degenerates who got in to trouble every 5 minutes.
