Is fact Disney described Genie's voice range as "from roar of a thunder to the flute-like whisper". And when Pekka Lehtosaari (the director of Finnish dub) read the description, Loiri was the first person that came to his mind because of Loiri's background as a flutist and this song.
This is the kind of song only our dear Eastern neighbourds could enter. And that's a compliment! Real POWER! Or "sisu" as they say. Musically so rich and complex. And great fun at the same time. Just like their (also vastly) underrated great entries from 1982 (Nuku pommiin) and 2015 (Aina mun pietã" etc.
My 12 points of that year and still is. Unforgettable great song.

RIP Huilumies
This song deserved a much higher place than last. The music and the singer are well done, but they are good because they sing in Finnish and are seen as an odd and unusual language that very few people outside of Finland around Europe can and understand what they are singing.
@mcparty Finnish isn't an ugly language at all! At least in my ears.

@@tylsimys67 Agree with dutch and danish but I think swedish is not bad to one's ears. Maybe because I can speak it. But there are only four non-indo-european languages in Europe, Finnish, Estonian, Hungarian and Basque. How can you tell this ? Jus count from one to six with these languages.

This song is along the most underrated in Eurovision Song Contest history. Rest in peace Vesa-Matti Loiri.
❤ Finland has lost a true legend today. This song might not be one of Finland's most legendery entries, but HE was a legend in Finland's entertainment world. A true multitalent, household name. There truly was no other like him. RIP legend! ❤
Absolutely fantastic performance from Vesku. My all time finnish favorite on Eurovision song contest together with Lasse Mårtenssons Laiskotellen. Gives me the chills every time I hear it.

Accidentally ran into this familiar performance. I maybe be biased as I am a Finn, but this song and perfromance is a masterpiece! It is autenthic and genuine, and one wonders, if this contest was a right platform to it. I think that the performance suffered in the major way internationally of the Finnish language and especially, that people did not understand, what the singer sang. In fact, the lyrics are quite great poetry, so that it is even a bit difficult to translate, but I think I wil try anyway, because I think that non-Finnish-speaking people deserve to know the lyrics. This is not an accurate translation, but good enough to share:

I had liked the music before, but it definitely got better now that I know the words.
I do appreciate your effort on translating this song, but it is next to impossible to get the real atmosphere out of this lyrical song. Well, you have to native Finn to get the most of this song. Like you have to be native English speaking to really understand Shakespeare (I mean you can try :) ) or even get the most out of Agatha Christie's rich language. I am native Finn.
@@jmakelalasse It is of course impossible to translate anything poetic exactly to the other language. So the translated lyrics will just give the basic poetic understanding, what the lyrics contain. In this particular song, if we are supposed to believe what is said in the lyrics, lyrics are just secondary to the tune, as the singer claims in the lyrics, that he is expressing himself by the flute and music. So the music and the performance are the most important here creating the magic of the song, but the lyrics can help understand the passion of the song and flute playing, and each and everyone can verify themselves, if the performer is able to create magic, passion and touch the life itself deeply in his performance. What a great approach, attitude and effort from the Finnish team!

Telex are cult legends whose music was widely sampled by countless of DJ's, hip hop, house and techno artists of the 80's and 90's. Carl Craig (influential and important music producer and father of the Detroit techno scene) consider them one of his influences. ZZ Top always played a Telex song as the end of all their concerts. Sparks produced one of their albums. They made remixes for artists like Depeche Mode, Pet Shop Boys and Blur. Yes, I'd say they made their mark and impressed quite a few. Those who got their sense of humor.

And this despite the fact that he had misgivings about the song. He felt the Finnish audience had chosen the wrong song, sung by the wrong singer. Yet he went to the Hague and gave it everything he had, which says a lot about his professionalism.

Hyvä biisi, hyvä laulaja, no ehkä tuo turhapuromainen äää loppulurituksen keskellä on turha. Yksi suomalaisille tyypillinen ongelma on taustakuoro. Se on miksattu aivan liian voimakkaaksi, ja nousee ohi solistin. Kuoron ammattitaidosta ei ole kyse, siellähän ovat mm. Maarit ja Irina. Ongelma on tekninen osaamattomuus. Monta kertaa sama juttu. Kuunnelkaa esim. 1990-voittajan, Italian Toto Gutugnon Insieme '92, jossa taustakuoron miksaus osuu nappiin.
1980in the Finnish eurovision there were 11 songs of which expert juries bounced 5 catchy pop songs in the semi final. 'Huilumies' was voted the winner in the final by regional juries. IMO this is one of our worse Eurovision entries ( not the performer's fault). The song has a phlegmatic vibe to it. Not surprised at the poor result that year.
