    So I know I am going to get a lot of comments about this so I'm going to post my study schedules below
    Learning Phase: At this point I had not yet written out all 1046 kanji from the Shinkanzen Master Kanji N2 and finished going through the Try N2
    Here's what I did every day:
    1. Kanji - Shinkanzen Master Kanji N2: Write 10 new kanji and review 100 old kanji and vocab words every day. Roughly 80 minutes for 5 days a week,. On 5th day, Friday do the workbook section instead of reviewing, probably puts the time up to 1.5 hours for that day.
    2. Vocabulary So-Matome: Review one chapter over a week. 20 minutes every day for 5 days a week.
    3. Grammar Try N2: Learn one new grammar chapter per day, take notes, do exercises in Try N2, review previous days studying and do the end of section/chapter review: 60 minutes every day for 5 days a week.
    4. Reading Shinkanzen Master N2 Reading Comprehension: Read 2-3 passages, answer questions, look up unknown words/grammar: ~40 minutes every day for 5 days a week for (if you really don't understand things it can take some time to figure it out so maybe up to 60 minutes per day here)
    Review Phase: At this point I had written out all 1046 from the Shinkanzen Master Kanji N2 book and completed Try N2 book.
    1. Kanji - Shinkanzen Master Kanji N2: Review the same 100 kanji and vocab everyday for a week (looking at the same set of 100 5 times), 20 minutes every day for five days.
    2. Vocabulary So-Matome: Review one chapter a week. 20 minutes a day for 5 days a week.
    3. Grammar Try N2: Review 5-6 chapters worth of grammar by reading over notes on grammar rules. 20-30 minutes for 5 days a week.
    4. 4. Reading Shinkanzen Master N2 Reading Comprehension: Read 2-3 passages, answer questions, look up unknown words/grammar: ~40 minutes every day for 5 days a week for (if you really don't understand things it can take some time to figure it out so maybe up to 60 minutes per day here)
    5. Listening - Around a 6 weeks to a month before the test listen to past tests on Hanasaki Academy Website. Do half of a listening section a day. 20-30 minutes a day for 5 days a week.

      Have you given any thought into using an SRS for reviews? I know there are a few Anki decks out there for up to N2 kanji, which could serve to further solidify your kanji w/o the need to manually go through a book, since you can have it on your phone and computer. Not just kanji, but for the grammar too. Not sure if you've heard of it, but I highly recommend it if you haven't. Also, best of luck with N2 when it finally does come around!

      Hang on, what? You don't know what Anki is? You should check out MattVsJapan's channel. The way I'm doing it is I use an Anki addon called Morphman which learns what words you know, such that it can give you flash cards with only one new word. There are tools to automatically turn tv shows into flash cards with the audio and subtitles components. For kanji I'm not bothering writing them. It's literally the lowest priority since you can just cheat with your phone as long as you recognise them. Even Dogen admitted to doing that, and his japanese is pretty high level.

    Not crazy about the SouMatome vocab book. They just don't give enough exercises. They introduce a lot of words, but only test you on 10% of them.
    Kanzen Master on the other hand, might have too many exercises. But they test you on every word, and even if you only complete 60-70% of it (skipping a section each chapter) you will come out with a lot of new words etched in your brain.
    Only bringing this up because vocab seems to be key to 80% of the test or more. A lot more critical than grammar, for example, which is only really important in the grammar section of the test. Not knowing a word can sink you in other sections, like reading/listening.
    Course, for those that can see a word once and remember it forever, no need to worry about any of this.

    • @utaausagiii8272
      @utaausagiii8272 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      aside from the exercises, would you say the kanzen master is still better in say explaining/presenting the words? i was thinking to buy the soumatome one bcs i dont really like physical textbook and they have the ebook version but i'm still considering between these 2

    • @arthurferrari363
      @arthurferrari363 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I actually don't think either book by itself is great for vocab. For me, it was definitely a challenge to remember the "next tier" of words. Basically words that are used fairly rarely, but you kind of need to know a reasonable amount of them to pass the N2 (and really reach that next level of Japanese, in my opinion).
      One of the difference makers for me was downloading the N2 vocab set on anki, and even N3-N5. I did about 1k flashcards a day, which might sound like a lot, but once you are used to it you can do 1k in around 40 mins.
      Words without context, like with flashcards, isn't the best way to learn. But with so many words that you may never see in your other forms of study (or even leisurely watching shows), I don't think there's much of a choice. And with enough repetition, eventually they will stick. And again, vocab is so critical to 80% of the test. You're guaranteed to come across words you don't know, but the more you know the better.
      After a few months of hitting those flashcards, I improved drastically on the vocab and reading sections. On the actual test, there were words I had never seen before, on all sections, but that will happen.
      Again, only my experience. Others might feel differently.

They can guess the meaning of difficult words or sentenses because of some Kanji are the same meaning or similar meaning. As for u, must be very hard to remember over 1000 Kanji. Amazing efforts! Keep up ur good study habits! Sooner or later, you can get N2. 😄

    I only have 2 1/2 months till sitting for N2 in July. I only started studying in February of this year. 🤦🏻‍♀️
    A few days ago I had my first mental breakdown, crying to my partner about possibly not passing the test (I need to pass so I can work in Japan after graduating language school), so he has agreed to help me study every week from now on. I just hope that I don't scare him off. 🥴
    Personally, I really like the Try! series because it's not too overwhelming. I found the Shinkanzen Master series to be too much for me, although I know it helped me a lot for N3.
    I also think that the Speed Master series is pretty good. I'm now just starting to do the Goukaku Dekiru book just to make sure that I cover as much as I can. Also, I despise kanji so... I know that I will never practise writing it. 😭

    I am studying for the N4. I could probably pass it if I took it right now, but I want to really make myself a strong foundation in Japanese, and I am in no rush to take the JLPT. My issue is, I never use Japanese. I have nobody to talk to, and all the kanji I learn and things I write are just in my notebook. I never have conversations with anybody in Japanese. I try to watch Japanese shows and my phone is in Japanese, and I am very good at writing and speaking, but I find myself forgetting grammar from N5 and N4 as soon as I learn them. I like to study, but I hardly ever remember what I learn, because I never use it. Not to mention how terrible my listening comprehension is. Overall, I am very unmotivated because I have a bad memory and I have nowhere to use Japanese until I go to college and to Japan. I often forget kanji and grammar I studied only weeks or months ago, so most of my study time is spent reviewing everything. It's like 3 steps back, 1 step forward. How does Boomer grind so much and remember it all? Probably because he lives in Japan. My progress is so slow and patchy. What are some tips or guidance on how to balance review and new material? Should I fuss about forgetting kanji and grammar, or just forget it and risk not remembering? Sorry, Im just so torn.

    Hi Boomer! Studying for the upcoming test in december with shinkanzen master and some sou matome!
    I'm wondering if you could explain a little bit more in detail how you used and reviewed kanji using the shinkanzen master book? I understand the amount you study, but how do youu go about to review them? in previous books i've had they've listed english and kanji's in spearate rows so you can cover either one and practice, but I can't do the same with shinkanzen.
    Hope you have a wonderful day, thank you!

    so i got couple intro college japanese courses down. id still say im 0 but i got a general idea. i want to study to n2 to take the test about 14-15 months from now. should i buy these books and start with them or buy the n5/4 versions start with them and work through each one going to n3 and then these n2 books?

    • @boomlore73
      @boomlore73  4 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      @@AbiyBattleSpell I would check out the N3 books and see if they are easy for you or not. There is a big gap between N3 and N2. You need a decent N3 level before you can move towards N2, imo

  • @gordonlim2322

    I noticed you only use one book for each section. Do you think that's enough? I got the whole somatome series and I'm wondering if I need the shinkanzen master series too. Also did you not get a practise tests book to test your timings?

    • @boomlore73
      @boomlore73  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I didn't when I made this video but I did use practice tests this time when I took the N2. Expect a review video at some point. I will say I think Shinkanzen Master is the best for reading at the N2 level for reading as the passages in the book are more like the test. I liked the Try series for grammar over Skinkanzen Master because there were more examples in the Try N2 book and there was listening practice.

    Hi Boomer, thanks for this video! What are your thoughts on Try? People say that the grammar textbook from Shinkanzen Master is more profound?

    • @boomlore73
      @boomlore73  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I used the Shinkanzen Master grammar text book for the N3 and I liked it. I think the Try book has more examples, so if you're studying on your own it might be easier to figure out. But the Shinkanzen Master series is pretty solid in general. Only one I didn't like was the Listening section for the N2.

    • @languagelover3343
      @languagelover3343 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@boomlore73 Thanks for your prompt reply Boomer, appreciated! I am currently using Try as recommended by my school. Just wondering whether Try is enough to pass the JLPT N3 test as I heard that Shinkanzen was more profound, hence my question.

    Hi Boomer, thanks for the Japanese JLPT N2 Study tips. I am also studying for the JLPT N2 and I am worried about the reading section. I passed the N3; however, the reading section was where I scored the least. I would like to do better in the reading section for the N2. What Japanese books do you recommend for reading? Also I cannot find the Memrise Shinkanzen Master Kanji N2 Study Course.

      I don't know where you went to college, but I know that if you take Japanese with no prior knowledge in the US and study for four years in college, you get to about N3 level. Some programs may be better, but that is my general understanding.
