Unfortunately, you don't really touch on the best part of this game, which is the coop. I know you're aware it exists, but you really missed out by not trying it. I don't want to oversell it too much, because it's the same game, so obviously it plays just as badly; but they do some really cool stuff with Lynch's mental problems, e.g. the second player will suddenly see civilians as agressive enemies, and just generally get a warped version of what's going on. I also remember Lynch going on secondary paths that you don't access in SP, though I could be wrong on that one. Dead Space 3 did some similar stuff with it's second character, and in both cases, being player 2 seemed more fun. So if you do end up playing it, I suggest going P2. [EDIT] Also, reviving is much less of a pain in coop, obviously. Also also, just to be clear, I'm not saying this is a great game. It's quite crap, but I've always considered the coop worth it-especially since there are never enough coop games to begin with.
Not just the SP coop, but the online adversarial coop fragile alliance where you do a robbery cooperatively, but are encouraged to be greedy and turn on your teammates so you have less people to split the score with. You'd have rounds where some dick turns on you, and get all the money. Or maybe you are playing with a friend, but two randoms as well, and so you and your buddy need to think about when to turn on them before they turn on you. Or maybe you stay cooperative through the whole job, and no teammates die. Though I do get it can be a pretty frustrating game mode because if you aren't friends with anyone in the lobby you can expect to get killed near the end of the job which I saw lots of people rage quit from. Though it captures the feel of playing with unpredictable criminals pretty well. My favorite part of the altered perceptions of lynch is when you are in the bank holding people hostage, and he start hallucinating all the innocent bystanders are cops and starts shooting them drawing much more police to the bank.
The co-op is amazingly unique. The 2nd player gets to be Lynch and he has his own paths and objectives. He indeed gets a warped reality of things. For example during the bankheist, the hostages are just civillians and do nothing on Kane's screen. But on 2nd player Lynch screen the hostages are dressed like cops and are agressive. Then Lynch will start shooting at them. But to Kane it will look like Lynch is excuting hostages like a madman.
Nobody talks about this game in its own merits, only in the context of the contraversy that happend in 2007( where the fuck has 11 years gone holy shit...), and the sequel looked pretty awful, I remember reading OXM UK magazine and they gave the game a 9... A 9!!!
I like this game. It definitely has flaws, but I like the story and the title characters. The scenarios it puts you in are awesome, and the crowd scenes are intense. when you reach Cuba, though, pretty much all of that stops, and the games problems become more apparent. It's a shame. They fixed the shooting and whatnot in the second game but got rid of the awesome scenarios and crowd scenes. There is a truly great shooter between what the first game does well and what the second does well. I always wanted IO to take another crack at it to combine the two into a great game.
I must say this game has a quite unique coop. Lynch has a schizophrenia and this disorder in a subtle and intersting way affects how you play him, to clarify: sometimes you will start seeing defenceless civilians as cops and if you choose to shot them, saner Kane will start calling you as a sick psycho xD
I have a soft spot for this game. While it's rough around the edges, there are a few things I liked about it. And while the sequel Dog Days was a major step back from Dead Men, I wished it would've turned out better than it actually is.
I can't use mouse and keyboard controls in this game . It forces me to use controller. Is it a common problem or I missed something ? If I did, what should I do to change controls ?
I love that glitch so much, the cutscene assumes Lynch would have an full auto-rifle on that always, especially since Lynch begins with one on the level, but if you hand him a shotgun either solo or co-op, it fires the shotgun like any other full auto rifle lol
the game has everything u need for perfect coop or crime game but the issues in the first K&L are controls and aiming and its broken AI but the sequel is a beast..one of best B Cult Classic game
Same. I acknowledge the issues behind both games and they're definitely generic in terms of gameplay, but the characters, atmosphere, setpieces and overall concept really kept me going in both games. It is pretty surprising we did get a 2nd game in the first place, I thought after the controversy and lukewarm reception of the first the 2nd one seems like it was a miracle it actually got out. Very unlikely but I really would be excited to see Kane & Lynch 3, especially after IO's recent success with their new Hitman games.
great review, you pretty much nailed how i felt on this one. i had first played the demo on 360, since I didn't have a pc back then, and i thought it was dogshit. Then a while later, my friend had gotten it for like $7 used, and i gave it a shot. wasnt enjoying the controls on console, and it was pretty ugly on xbox, but as i got further in, i started liking it a bit more. its flaws and underwhelming qualities never became any less apparent, but theres just something oddly likeable about the game. I've always been more into the military shooters, so i actually really liked the tone shift in the cuban levels, even though the poorer aspects of the gameplay definitely shoned more in them. One thing I've come to appreciate more in games and movies is whether or not i remember them. there's been movies i watched that i thought were good while i was watching, but then were totally forgettable, and there's also been movies that i didn't think were that great, but they stick with you for years. Kane and lynch is one of those games that had stuck with me from the first time i played through it, since then i did get to play it on pc, and even ran through it on split screen coop. it certainly had the potential to be great, but just missed the mark. i didnt play the second one yet, i played the demo and thought it might be at least as good as the first.
Huh.. I remember this game looking so pretty and graphically amazing when it first came out.......... Then again I was a dumb 11 year old back then with only sonic and timesplitters so what do i know. d:
This franchise had so much potential. The first game wasn't great, but it replicated the atmosphere of Michael Mann's crime thrillers, its plot was full of surprises, its locations were diverse, and its gameplay emphasised cooperation over lone wolf glory. Had the developers simply improved the gunplay and AI and retained everything else, it could have become the franchise's "Killzone 2". Sadly, "Dog Days" stripped away all that potential -- it had no plot, every location looked identical, and the gameplay was generic shooting with no variety. The game's only unique selling point was that it sort of looked like a Hong Kong crime thriller, but without the charm, character or humanity of a Hong Kong thriller. "Dead Men" was sub-par, but "Dog Days" killed the franchise.
How come you didn't mention the fact that this game is on the same engine as Hitman: Blood Money, and that IOI reused a ton of assets from BM in this game?
It's amazing the number of PC games you can't get digitally, like Evil Dead: Regeneration, The Thing, Turning point, Turok 2008 and The Blair Witch games.
About you calling the friendly AI bad, its mostly down to your lack of ability to guide them. You really should be telling them often where to take position.
I always wondered how a Game Based on Venom would be. After seeing the film in Theaters, I was Reminded of Prototype & 2. Next on the Review - list ?? Ps . Great review as always.
The co-op is amazingly unique. The 2nd player gets to be Lynch and he has his own paths and objectives. Lynch will get a warped reality of things. And the 2nd player will experience that too. For example during the bankheist, the hostages are just civillians and do nothing on Kane's screen. But on 2nd player Lynch's screen the hostages are dressed like cops and are agressive. Then Lynch will start shooting at them.(the 2nd player is forced to because they'll do actual damage) But to Kane it will look like Lynch is excuting hostages like a madman. Things like that made Kane and Lynch a good co-op experience suffered by some bad gameplay mechanics. But once you get used to it, it becomes a unique and fun exerience.
It was actually the sequel that the Jeff controversy happened over, since GameSpot was advertising it everywhere all over the site and then Jeff took a massive dump all over the game.
Didn't mind the games but honestly I fell for the trailer hype. They did such a great job with the marketing that I pretty much didn't care how bad the reviews were, I still wanted to play it. It was a letdown, but I've had worse.

I still appretiate the game for what it is. A schloky 90s style of action movie. A lot of real cheap movies came out that decade, except that this one managed to get scored by that guy that worked on Lucio Fulci movies. Don't if the analogy makes sense, but that's how I see this game to this day. The sequel on the other hand was a really poorly thought out game.
God the story was so depressing to play through. Every guy you hook up with either leaves thinking the mission is FUBAR, or they die where nothing goes to plan. The ending is really depressing aswell, you can either choose one of two endings, but both are depressing. Maybe I need to replay it, but it downer first experience. Also, Which ending does K&L 2 take place after? Aside from the story, the shooting overall felt really loose and the Psuedo cover mechanics felt sloppy...
@@JohnSmith32643 I cant remember the soundtrack, been a long while since I played the game, but I presume then it takes place when your daughter dies in your arms and Kane laments about how the letter he wrote to his wife
@@MrNuclearturtle Yes that's exactly what happened in that ending. The soundtrack is great I highly recommend you listen to it on TH-cam when you have the chance
Game is alright, but i definitely prefer Resident Evil and Army of Two over it. I agree, main problem of the game is that it's kind of really generic in terms of gameplay.
lmao I remember being 10 and my dad buying this game. I wanted to slap the shit out of him so bad. The story, premise, and music is great, but the gameplay is so awful and stiff that it kills the game. Anyone saying that the game is underrated is lying. the game is terrible and it gets the essentials(gameplay, fun factor, graphics) wrong, and it only gets worse as the game progresses. That being said I hope they make a third game so that we can have at least one game in the series that isn't under a 5/10
He's complaining about the A.I yet is clearly playing on the lowest difficulty level. I beat this game on max difficulty and you could NOT just chill out around the cops at 4:55. Very negative guy too, if you listen to most of his videos he's complaining a lot and his usage of words is very negative as well. Hope you find some peace bro, but until then stop lying.
This game is bad. The story is unremarkable, the gunplay is inaccurate and weak, and the sequel is somehow even worse. This game is shit and its sequel is one of the worst games I've ever played...
Kane and Lynch has one of the best soundtracks in existence

exactly , the game* was made to be played* co op either online or split screen just like a way out but with the option to play solo
Imagine making a game for years and the only one memorable thing is a review controversy
After the sequel, this series will forever be lost in the sands of time.

In splitscreen coop , for some reason all weapons become very accurate, and there is more enemies to shoot.
The game is solid crime thriller. Story and characters are good. Music is fucking great.
