Steve, I grew up in Detroit Michigan and Elvin grew up in Pontiac Michigan, which is about 45 minutes from my house. I never got to meet Elvin but I did see him with Coltrane at the minor key lounge in Detroit. I believe it was either 1961 or 62. I wasn’t old enough to get in to the place so I stood outside by the the door and could hear the band playing . Every time someone would come and go I would peek in and see the band . Elvin’s drums were closest to the door so I could see him clearly. He was really something to listen to. I was just a beginner playing the drums and his playing was a big influence on me. I was just a kid and now I’m almost 80 years old and still playing my tubs to this day.
Great playing. The first time I saw Elvin was in 1971 at the museum of Modern Art in Manhattan. He was playing a Jade Satin flame Gretsch kit. I got to met him and still have the sticks he gave me. I saw him many times after that with other kits including the yellow Gretsch kit which you had in the NY store.
As always, great playing. Love the rail & direct-to-shell rack tom mount. Plenty of resonance, clean & elegant, no heavy, ugly, cumbersome suspension mount needed!
Always a big fan of the satin flame finishes, especially this one,put stage lights on them and they change color with just the switch of a colored bulb. They look absolutely stunning.!!
Those sound great. My unpopular opinion as a the owner and player of a set of Progressive Jazz Round Badge Gretch is that they actually sound best when tuned down considerably.
OMG, I wish I saw this before I ordered a new usa custom from Gretsch. They promised it in "30 weeks." From what I read on the forums I'm not holding out much hope they will even meet THAT deadline.
Hi Steve - Great video! Elvin jones is my favorite jazz drummer! I have a gretsch Catalina 4 piece kit with zildjian Constantinople hi hats, ride cymbal, k left side ride with rivets, and swish knocker!

It's good cardio if nothing else. Keeps the mind sharp. Essentially the Jim Chapin independent sticking book.
Fantastic looking and sounding
You're the best drum guy on youtube. Been watching you for 10 years now

Great Video! Maybe if I'm not on the naughty list this year Santa will bring me a satin flame kit with an 18" BD 🤞
That looks like a 20 to me.
Your stick movements are very light and nimble. What model of drumsticks do you use?
