    How to Parallel Park :: Step by Step Instructions | Pass a Road Test :: • How to Parallel Park t...
    How to Parallel Park :: The Variables to Consider | Pass Road Test Smart :: • How to Turn Right at C...
    Most of the same reference points and techniques apply for parallel parking between 2 vehicles as parallel parking behind one vehicle or off a fixed object.
    • Locate the parking space - is the space legal and is it approximately 1 ½ times the size of your car
    • Mirror, signal, shoulder check and ensure that it is safe to stop and that there aren't any vehicles tailgating you
    • Pull up beside the car (3 feet from the car-in front of the parking space you wish to back into--and stop
    • Line up the rear bumpers-you will be able to see the rear corner of the vehicle through your rear right window
    • Put the car into reverse so the reverse lights activate telling traffic that you are going to park
    • Put on your right signal to communicate to other traffic that you are going to park
    • Locate your 45° degree reference point, which should be straight out form the door post-the reference marker can be any fixed object
    • Release the brake pedal and back slowly, steering rapidly all the way to the right without any throttle and backing until your are facing your reference point
    • At this point the rear bumper of the stationary car should be in line with your steering wheel
    • Straighten the wheels and back until the bumper of the parked car is ½ to 1/3 the way down your hood or the front of your car clears the parked car
    • Steer rapidly all the way to the left and back until the car is straight in the space
    • Stop
    Put the transmission in “Drive” or a forward gear and pull forward
    • You should be able to see the top of the rear bumper of the car in front of you
    • When park your vehicle should be 6-9” inches from the curb
    • Secure your vehicle by applying the parking brake and putting the transmission into park (or a forward gear if you’re driving a manual transmission)
    Most of the same reference points and techniques apply for parallel parking between 2 vehicles as in the first video, but some of the secondary landmarks are different. Here, alternative reference points are offered for parallel parking.
    When learning to parallel park, start in a parking lot where there are few vehicles and use cones or other fixed obstacles. When you get comfortable with that exercise, move to parking behind one vehicle. After becoming comfortable with that, move to parking between two vehicles.
    Remember to go slow so that you have time to both observe and operate the primary controls.

    Thanks as always for the great tips! As a secondary check to the 45degree, i can usually see the top of the rear tire of the front vehicle before backing straight. Before turning full left, the ref.pts. I use are: (1) my side mirror covers the left tail light of the front vehicle; and (2) my rear passenger door handle looks like its on top of the curb when i look on the sidemirrors.
    Of course, it varies slightly when i’m using a Sedan or a pick-up truck. Experience is still and always will be the best teacher.
    Cheers!

    Normally, the reference point for 45 degree angle is when the entire front of the rear car appears in the mirror as shown at 2:35.
    But I know the reason why you choose your reference point as shown at 2:40, in which only inside headlight appears in the mirror.
    It depends on how far the rear car is located. The further its location, the earlier its image appears on the driver's mirror when we turn our steer.
    Here, the rear car is a bit far behind. In this situation, if we use the former ref point (2:35), it won't point to 45 degree. It will then force us to backward straight far more than usual to avoid hitting the front car during our next maneuver.
    So your ref point at 2:40 is correct for this situation.
    For this reason, as I have said in your other video, if I know the parking space is greater than normal, I will use my other reference point although it's less convenient for me.

      @smartdrivetest  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Lex Soft - Thank you for your comment. And yes, there are going to be variables as you park your vehicle. I have watched your video on variables that we should consider when doing parallel park. With those variables in our consideration, I need to analyze how to make adjustment for different situations. It involves logical reasoning with some knowledge of geometry related to angle and distance, as well as physics of optics which concerns with how an object image appear in a mirror.

    Lifesaver, thank you. Never took drivers ed (my parents were broke af), only had to learn to maneuver the car between cones as if parallel parking for my test (which I was terrible at, but somehow passed.) No one ever showed me how you do that between actual cars. Never had a problem living in the suburbs, then I moved to South Philadelphia... Yikes. My first day here I honestly wanted to sell my car haha. Anyway, this is very helpful, thank you.

    Yes this video is better than the first one about parallel parking the references you added are more useful
    I prefer to make all references related to the the car in front of you the one we align our car with it ,because he rear car could be far or closer to use as a reference. So what I am saying parallel parking in places which are less than 1.5 times our car and using only references from the car in front of us and curb .those two will be much useful to have points on them as references

    • @smartdrivetest
      @smartdrivetest  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi M M - Apologies for the late response. Thank you for your comment. And yes, it is easier for some to use the references points from the car in front. Unfortunately because parallel parking is complex, not all the reference points work all the time. In some instances you may have to make some adjustments. With practice, you'll nail it every time. One of the ways to improve your driving skill is to practice the slow-speed manoeuvres: th-cam.com/video/w3Dc8k1jOq8/w-d-xo.html Practicing the slow-speed manoeuvres will improve your overall driving and better prepare you for the licence test. I would also suggest some driving lessons with a driving instructor. The instructor can do an evaluation and give you suggestions for improvement. All the best, Cheers Rick

    I have a big old pickup I have had for 20 years and have never had to parallel park it for an exam. At 67, and having to now take the exam, it's been 53 years since I took the exam and as a rule I never parallel park Big Blue for fear of damaging mine and another car. The way he's built I can't see well out the sides of the side rear windows and his height off the ground makes it hard for me to judge his perimeter. I am practicing and really need to pass the exam but I am shaking in my boots.

    Hey Rick,
    Wanted to let you know how my road test went today. So sad news, I failed. But that was because the roads are really icy and I slid through a turn on a red light, I felt it too unsafe to stop and back up so I just completed the turn. Sadly that was still an automatic fail. But I got a good low amount points, so if it weren't for that light I would have passed. I'm being positive about that actually. Super happy with the fact that I would have passed if it wasn't for that one mistake. And I have one booked for tomorrow, and tomorrow will be the day that I get it, and I will tell you when I do.

    • @ashleybellerose7104

      Joe Mumford it is easy. The way I was taught was bumper to bumper, then back up untill their left taillight is just behind the head restraint on the passanger side, and when it is turn your wheels all the way to the right untill your 45 degrees like rick says here or until your steering wheel is inline with there left taillight ( they are both about 45 degrees), I prefer the way rick does it. After that you wanna straighten the wheel and back up untill their taillight is just about at the first bump of the wipers and then turn your wheels all the way to the left ans straighten out. I did it between two cars and at first I was so scared. I drive a jeep grand Cherokee, so depending on car it may be slightyl different. I practiced it one day and did it on my own once before my road test and I rocked it. I do agree with rick though. dont do it the way I did, practice is always better. Its super easy. Do it as many times you need to and you'll see its really easy. :) Good luck and let us know how you do! Road tests are easy if you practice. They are not as intimidating as everyone expects so dont worry, get some practice and you'll do great!

    I've never had the pleasure of parallel parking with as much room as you show in these videos. Both Manhattan, USA & Amsterdam, The Netherlands are parking situations where 4-6 feet beyond the car is generous. So truthfully, I've never used any other marker but not tapping the car behind me or the car in front of me. Markers are clearing the rear bumper of the car ahead of me, and seeing the complete forward bumper of the car behind me before turning as steeply as possible. Perhaps that will help new drivers who are confused by the various "markers".
    To add something personal here - I was snowed out of my driver's exam last Wednesday (I'm a licensed driver in both NY State - expired - & The Netherlands - but neither of those count in Pennsylvania). I'll be going back tomorrow hoping they can fit me in (I'm penciled in, if they have time, for 3PM). Otherwise, I'll have to wait until the end of March.
    I'm also very nervous about my instructor - because he insists that I turn both my right & left hand mirrors to the curb for the parallel park which is the third maneuver on this particular driving test. I don't really mind doing without my right hand mirror for the driving part of the test, but it really bothers me to drive without my left hand mirror. He insists it's an automatic fail if I readjust my mirrors (also if I perform a 4th maneuver & pull up as I would normally do in real life). This tells me that turning both my mirrors to the curb is illegal. He says 'they let all the schools do it', which I'm sure is true, but if they fail anyone who draws attention to that fact, it must be illegal. I plan on putting my foot down tomorrow & insisting on parking with my left mirror up, but I know he's going to fight with me, and try to intimidate me. But the minor advantage in positioning on the left, just doesn't seem worth losing the mirror for the entire driving portion of the test.
    Still, I have agoraphobia, & I really hate conflict, & going into a driving test shaking with anxiety or on the edge of a panic attack doesn't seem like a great plan. I do have a plan B - tomorrow is definitely the last time I will see this particular instructor. If I fail, I will be greatly annoyed because he's had 6 hours to teach me, not to drive, but just to pass this particular exam - on the other hand, I now have Smart Drivers Test & a different instructor lined up who thinks this is as crazy as I do.
    However, none of this changes the fact that I am going into this exam with an awful lot of anxiety & knowing that I will almost certainly have another screaming fight with my instructor before even getting there. Wish me luck!

      @@smartdrivetest Well I did what I said I would, & put my foot down. My instructor & I did fight - in fact I had to get out of the car & go back into my house to let him finish his temper tantrum. I then used your instructions to practice a total of 5 times; then made a silly mistake - a whole 6" too far back - on the test which was an automatic fail.
      Still, I feel incredibly relieved, even though I have to wait another 4 weeks to register my car (already bought for me). I feel like a weight has been lifted. I am SOOO glad to say good-bye to this instructor. I am SOOO glad not to have the same fight every two weeks. I am SOOO glad not to have to do this test illegally. I now move to plan B, & I have no doubt that passing will be easy. Thanks for all your support! I can't tell you how much it's meant to me.

    Hey Rick, I noticed on some "one way traffic" streets that cars are also parked on the left side, so I am curious if you could make a video for "parallel parking on the left hand side" for this scenario? Would you say it's harder or easier than right side parking?
    Suggestion aside, great video. Thanks as always.

    Hey Rick!
    Thankyou so much for your advice in this video (and all of them for that matter!).
    A small question that has always got me when parking and generally driving, is that I get so worried about my spatial awareness within the dimensions of my car; as in I can never tell quite how close I am to the car in front, or the curb etc..
    What certainly doesn't help is the wing and rear-view mirrors showing different depths (or so it seems to me!). Everyone I've asked says that it's just practice, but surely practice means 'going wrong' at some stage, i.e bumping into the car in front!?
    To combat this, I tend to just end up avoiding 1-car spaces or being miles away from the curb!
    I also understand that you eventually get used to the dimensions of the car, but I'm about to set off on a road trip across the USA, which will involve A). My first time driving across the pond from England, B). Driving on the right, and B). Driving in a much physically bigger and probably more powerful car than my VW polo!
    Anyway, sorry for the essay here, and thanks for all your brilliant and thoroughly helpful videos! Anna :)

Here is one video that may help: th-cam.com/video/7pWQMIaSLAo/w-d-xo.html&index=3 Also, I would suggest practicing with some 1m tall cones - that way if you hit one, it's not a big deal. And parking in spaces are more than one vehicle length is a good practice. As I say, if you're not near anything, it's less likely that you're going to hit something. • @smartdrivetest
      @smartdrivetest  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi B Kumar - thanks for your comment. If you don't hit the curb when you're backing into the space, don't worry too much about how far you are from the curb when you get the vehicle parked. If you're too far, you'll lose a couple of points, but it won't be terminal. And you are right, if you make too many adjustments, you will lose points that could compromise you passing you test. Just practice getting the vehicle into the space without too many movements. If you have any other questions, drop us a note - always happy to help. Thanks Cheers Rick

      Two things you can do: know that the steering wheel turns 1 1/2 revolutions in each direction. Put a piece of tape on the steering wheel so you know when it's straight at a glance. Also, look forward through the windscreen to see if you're straight after you stop of course. See this vid for more info: th-cam.com/video/l1qKjjeK3gk/w-d-xo.html All the best, Cheers Rick

    Hi Rick. Very helpful and informative videos. My question is how to determine that if you have parked close enough to the curb? Are there any reference points for that and what information the passenger side mirror can convey, in this regard? Thanks!

    • @smartdrivetest
      @smartdrivetest  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Sabre Toothed - thanks for your query. Unfortunately, there aren't any reference points to determine how close you are to the curb; thus that very point is why reverse parallel parking is challenging. Usually, driving instructors and examiners will open the passenger door and have a look. Now I have seen some instruction that indicates that you can point the passenger mirror down toward the curb; but I wouldn't advocate that for a road test because it takes up valuable time to move the mirror and than adjust it back for forward driving again. For the purposes of a road test, it is more important that you follow all the safety steps. If you're too far from the curb, it minor demerits. Think of it like a math problem in high school - if you do all the work right, but get the wrong answer, you going to get most of the marks. So the key to successful parallel parking is practice, practice, practice. As well, see the video on parallel parking variables - that may help. Thanks Cheers Rick

      Make experiment and observation. Choose safe area. Reverse as normal, then when you begin to worry about the gap, stop, secure the car, and get out of the car (engine is still running). Measure the gap, then get in. While your car is still in stationary, find any reference point inside your car that relates to that moment.
      Continue the process until you get your desired gap or final result.
      For example : when you find that you can see the number plate of the rear car, you measure the gap is 3ft.
      As there is plenty of space, you can continue the same process.
      Notes : I assume you reverse straight. But for reversing in an angle (diagonal), you may do similar experiment.

    Hello there, I had a specific question I was wondering you could answer. So my family has two vehicles, a Jeep Liberty and a Mini Cooper. I had my road test today my local testing center, and after practicing for months I decided to use the Jeep because that was the only car I could successfully parallel park every time, I just couldn't get it with the Mini for some reason. I failed my road test though, because aside from the parallel parking, I am much more comfortable driving the Mini in general, so I got nervous and made too many stupid mistakes. Having a Mini is perfect for my situation because there's a driving school nearby which happens to be a 3rd-party testing center where I can retake the test soon, and that driving school also uses Mini Coopers. So, my question is, do you have any advice for me to ace parallel parking using the Mini, or with a smaller car in general? Or, should I use the Jeep on my test again because I can parallel park that car much better, and I will wait a couple weeks to take the test so I can get used to the rest of the car? Thanks!

      Hi Fromp4 - apologies for the late response. What I suggest is that you have to back deeper into the space with the Mini and other smaller cars because the vehicle is shorter. Work with that and see how it goes. If you're more comfortable driving the Mini overall, do the road test in the Mini. The test doesn't have to be perfect, and you're likely going to be successful on the test, even if you mess up the parallel parking. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
