Ukraine attacks on Russian oil and gas sites ramping up to slash Putin's war chest

- Ukraine is aiming at Russia's wallet as it begins targeting the country's largest oil and gas refineries, hundreds of miles inside the Russian border.
Russia is planning to spend more than $100bn on its military this year, and in response Ukraine is launching drone strikes against its enemy's vital facilities to try to reduce the Kremlin's war chest.
Since January, and to date, Ukraine has been responsible for attacks on 12 Russian oil refineries, with the largest being the plant at Ryazan, which refines nearly 13 million tonnes of crude a year, nearly 6% of the country's total.

Very smart move by Ukraine. The US has provided a huge amount of military aid to the Ukrainians but everyone knows it’s not enough, they need more. US aid has now stalled; if and when it resumes, and the further $60 billion aid package is released, then the US will be in a position to ask Ukraine to cease attacking Russia’s oil industry. Until then, Ukraine has every right to do anything and everything it can to defend itself, and anyone who complains about a jump in prices at the pump would do well to remember that it’s not them who are being decimated by missiles and whose homes are being destroyed, and whose very existence is under threat.

Yes, I agree; as "an ally of Ukraine", I see no need for "balance" -- Ukraine should do what it needs to do to secure victory without worrying about the price of oil/gas around the world. If prices go up, it's only an added incentive to move to more environmentally-sound alternatives, which our politicians have been spouting-on about for decades. And it weans us off products which are largely controlled by those whose values are not aligned to our own.

It would be useful for oil industry experts to explain how long repairs might take, the impact of sanctions banning the Russian import of western manufactured plant etc. as the market clearly reacts as if it is a longer term impact given a blazing mega refinery causes refined oil futures to jump 1% a pop.
Looks to me as if Ukraine is being very calculated in taking down enough of the hardware at each refinery - and no more - to destabilise the operating efficiencies. It comes just as Putin has wrestled with the inefficiencies driven by the sanctions causing demand to drop by ~30%.
Damage to more than a few plants will saturated the engineering industry's ability to repair. Meaning longer down times

In fact its worse - Russia has not enough spare parts and knowhow for major repairs, at least not without the help of the companies that build them or helped the Russians to build them.
@SLOWLYdoesit1 having worked in a refinery for 20+ years the time for repairs depends on the amount of damage and availability of needed spare parts...(it's not like car repairs were you can get parts of the shelf) some parts may have to specially made which it's possible could take up to 12 months (or longer) all in all more than a couple weeks (we typically had failures of a piece of equipment (not as in this case) and plant was down for 9-10 weeks just a failure not severe damage....

Russia has already stopped importing gasoline. In russia itself, gasoline is becoming more expensive and in some places there is no gasoline. In some places there is no longer food in that quantity. Many companies have closed or are being bought up by alligarchs. The economy is collapsing very quickly. Sanctions also play a role. Russia's territory is so large that they cannot defend it. Therefore, attacks on its territory and sanctions will very quickly destroy russian power and end this war.
Dream on! Petrol became scarce and more expensive because it was more profitable to export it. The Russian Govt has banned exports to protect and reduce the price in domestic markets. Many foreign companies have sold up and those in key industries have been taken over by the State. The ECB has raised the GDP growth forecast for Russia for 2024! The attacks on Russian refineries has nothing to do with Russia's size. They are done by terrorist partisans local to the sites.

The prices of everything are soaring now. This is going to increase the cost of goods and services across the world thus affecting millions around the world, not even to mention the devastating effects on the poorest countries.
It's also forcing the Russians to pull critical weapons off the front lines to defend their economy. Even if Ukraine never meaningfully impacts Russia's oil capacity, this is a win. And it's just barely started. Here for it, I'll live with the higher prices and I'm broke AF, slava Ukraine.

To compound the problem even further, since Russia has been cut off the supply of replacement parts and Western technology for these refineries (since Shell, Mobile, Exxon left the country) repairs will be hampered by this.
