Even within the EU different countries have different qualifications and limits on freedom of speech, depending on their own historical sensitivities (e.g. Holocaust denial in Germany). Here, we have ridden a coach and horses through freedom of speech by the creep of hate speech legislation.

I'm an actress and after the Laurence Fox debacle I have given up my equity membership. I have been a member for years but it has been totally taken over by the repressive, illiberal left. I expect my union to protect my rights as an actor not to demand I regurgitate and adhere to ideas which I do not agree with and worse still stamp on any debate or discussion with the threat of unemployment or being outed as a racist. The thing about platforms like twitter is that, at first, they are joined by people who are "action oriented." The tone, beliefs, and actions of those users shape the platform. It takes a while for people like myself to get out of our comfort zones and "tweet". To me, twitter is a hassle. I have more sensible things to do.
What's changing is that stories like Laurence's are becoming more common. Tweeting feels no longer a matter of preference. It almost feels like a duty. When we see our honest, educated people being attacked, we, the I-m-happy-in-my-own-little-world people, realize that it's time to speak up and to show our support. ❤️

My first introduction to Lawrence Fox was PBS on Inspector Lewis. Now I'm seeing him as an incredibly reasonable fella with very well thought out comments. I am white and fairly old. I am an American. In my ENTIRE LIFE, I have heard the N word spoken ONCE in almost seven decades by a white person (not counting usage by young Blacks). My family's heritage is Irish. It is common knowledge that the Irish were discriminated against, as were Blacks OBVIOUSLY, in the late 1800s. My family took a strong position against racism. And yet I am told (constantly by the media) that I am racist because my skin is pale.

As Douglas Murray suggests, you can take any metric, and way to compare countries attitude to race, polls, immigration numbers, racist attacks stats, conviction rates, arrest stats, media. higher education stats. Any comparison, and the UK comes out very well indeed next to almost any other country you can think of.
Are we perfect? of course feccking not. But we have far less racism when compared to the majority of other countries. (I cant think of one that is better when it comes to welcoming all races and giving opportunities to any who grace our beautiful land.)
@@TheWhale45 I have visited US a few times, so my knowledge is mostly limited to media/news. But I have to say race seems like much more of a thing in the USA than it does here in UK. But I bow to knowledge that comes from a lived experience.

Agree about God. Until I was a Christian I was profoundly unhappy with the world and even unsettled in my own home. The reality that Christ died that all who believe in him may receive forgiveness and receive eternal life brought home my situation: sinner but saved. Never apologize for this. Read and believe in God's word. Find a church you can trust, such as a good Lutheran one. Attend it!

As a Brit living in North America the other day I was asking an American friend about the "taking the knee" scenario. I said to her that I did not understand what this was about (i.e why it was classed as disrespectful) and explained to her that in my culture, kneeling before something or someone was classed as a submissive act and often an act of respect i.e, people kneel or curtsey to the Queen etc. She then explained to me that in their culture, you stand up straight for the American flag and what it stands for. And there we have it. We speak the same language but our cultures are completely different. Brits get a big shock when they go to live in Canada because they expect, speaking the same language the culture will be the same. Of course the culture is very different in Canada even to the USA.
