Sesame Street is absolutely wonderful! Growing up dirt poor in the streets of Manila in the Philippines in thé 70s and in the early 80s, I learned how to speak and understand English through Sesame Street. I miss Big Bird, Ernie and Bert, Maria, Bob, Olivia and everybody. My work has taken me to Hong Kong, Riyadh, Toronto, Atlanta, San Francisco, and now Singapore, and, when people ask me if I grew up in America, I tell them I grew up in Sesame Street.

Same here as well. Honestly, considering Sesame Street really has lasted for half a century so far, it's hard to believe it actually did not exist prior to 1969(unbelievable but true), so at the same time, now that I think about it, it's also hard to imagine how people like my parents, for example(and even earlier generations going further yet back in time)would have developed their alphabet and counting skills as preschoolers(I know they all did, e.g.,as with say, those real outdated alphabet blocks, but still you know what I mean, kind of like how it's hard to picture how people managed in the 19th century before the days of electricity, with only oil lamps, candles, etc, and heck, even when I was growing up when it was before the days of the internet and mobile phones I certainly had no idea that one day, for example, they would invent a new kind of phone that would phase out public telephones, or a new kind of "letter writing" that would supplant actual letter writing(email, of course, and pertaining to the internet, which has also phased out telephone books greatly and "dated" paper job applications. Anyway, now that Sesame Street has actually been in production for 50 years and helped children not just here in the U.S. but around the GLOBE, how hard it is to believe that people like my parents actually would not have benefited from watching Sesame Street(as it didn't exist prior to 1969).

Wow! I can't believe that you met Caroll Spinney in person, Haley! I can tell that he's a kind person. I grew up listening to his voice on Sesame Street for many years. I should think about writing him a letter letting him know that I really enjoy his work. He has so many stories to tell. I had just recently read an article where he as Big Bird had a phone conversation with a five-year-old boy named Joey, who was very ill with cancer. It was so sad, yet beautiful. That article was a few years old, but that story must have taken place in the mid-1980s.
I'm going to turn the big 5-0 in just 17 more days. It's March 28, 2019 as I make this post. So I would have been almost seven months old when Sesame Street premiered. I have the DVD featuring the premiere episode, which came with the book that was written ten years ago commemorating the show's 40th. :)
LOVE Sesame Street! I grew up watching this! I turned 50 last year. I wasn't allowed to watch much tv when I was young, but Sesame Street was the exception. Grover was and is my favorite! I teach Pre-K and I still use clips from the show to help the kids understand academics and social situations. Sesame Street has truly shaped so many generations for the better!!

Wow everyone born between 1965 to 1981 grew up with this. Happy 50th Birthday Sesame Street. Good childhood memories especially that ending funky theme.
I must be old because I still remember the weird Cookie Monster prototype that was green and had teeth. Also, Big Bird had a strange, tiny head. It was a bit scary. I guess that's why the designs had to be tweaked.
The sharp-toothed monster that eventually became Cookie Monster was never used on Sesame Street; it was on some commercials Jim Henson made in the mid-'60s. (And it was never green.)

PBS is responsible for making me, and most of my generation the people we are today. I was already way past learning my numbers and letters when Sesame Street arrived (I'd learned to read and do simple math by the age of 4) but I still loved the show and its counterpart The Electric Company. WTTW was my public television station growing up and while I was only allowed to watch 2 hours of TV a day if I chose to watch cartoons, my mom let me watch all the PBS shows I wanted. I was a Masterpiece Theater addict! I couldn't get enough of shows like Upstairs/Downstairs. I was also addicted to their Sunday night comedy line up which introduced me British comedies like "No, Honestly", "The Two Ronnies" and of course, "Monty Python's Flying Circus." WTTW was truly my window to the world (which is what the acronym stands for.) I learned to cook with Julia Child, Graham Kerr and Jeff Smith! And there are a host of learning and entertainment programs that help us all learn and grow and opened our eyes to all the possibilities of who we are and who can can become. If someone asked me, "Who's your favorite teacher?" I'd have to say PBS. And it all started with Sesame Street!
@@icecreamhero2375 he actually doesn’t. I’m always aware that I’m listening to an impression. Listen to Kevin and Ryan back to back. If you listen you can tell the difference
I plan to watch the DVD featuring the show's very first episode on or near 11/10/2019 for the show's golden anniversary. I turn the big 5-0 myself in just 17 more days, on 4/14/2019.
CBS Sunday Morning thank you for posting this video louder. The Linda Ronstadt, and Sam Elliot were very difficult to hear on my full volume. 🎉Happy Birthday Sesame Street🎈 and VEGAS PBS 💟
I think bringing a autism character to Sesame Street is a fantastic idea! I've actually suffered with only mild of autism and even my sister she's has twice as autism as I am. Fortunately, in the real world we can still understand and work hard like every average human being. My point is, never count the autisms they can show a lot determination and tell all kinds of details for their talents and stories.
Congratulations on 50 years of education enlightenment, Sesame Street. And, for coming to DragonCon. I hope that you all will invite me and The Feedback Family as guest stars on your show. And, tell Super Grover that we will do a heroic team up. By the way, please include The Aquabats as well. Again, Happy Big 5-0, GLITTER AND GOLD! DANGER WOMAN
Big Bird's voice was provided by Matt Vogel in this because Caroll Spinney retired from doing the voices of Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch after almost 50 years.
February 3, 2019: i remember when Oscar was orange with black eyebrows and when grover was dark green. and ernie and bert look a little different today then they did in 1969. I also remember a lot of sesame street segments. one I like is called "mrs Wilson's garden". it's about a girl named jenny who went to visit her mom's friend, mrs Wilson, who had a garden behind her house. I first saw that segment in 1971 or 1972, but I found out it was filmed sometime in 1969. does anyone know the exact date that segment was filmed on and if mrs Wilson still lives in that same house and does she still have a garden? I also remember another segment about a man who went forwards while everything and everyone else went backwards. at one point in that video, a chef was unwriting stuff from a chalkboard. as he moved the chalk along the writing, the writing disappeared. the man asked him "how did you do that?" and the chef replied "do what?"
Both of those segments you mentioned are on youtube. The latter I also remember, it's from season 6 or 7 I believe(but don't quote me, although it definitely is from the 1970s.) I saw it frequently; I watched SS all thru the 70s.
And yes, Grover was originally green. However, he did not have a specific name at first, although Kermit sometimes called him "funny face," or something like that as seen in this one early segment from the first season where Kermit tries to have Grover get in the box, only Grover can't because Fred the dragon(of Ed Sullivan show fame)is in the box.
I think it’s a shame that the Muppets proper (Kermit & co.) and other Henson properties have fallen by the wayside. I wish Sesame Street many more happy birthdays and hope that people continue to carry the torch and honor it’s rich legacy.
@@RossStern I mean, every time someone picks up a character, they have to put their own spin on it. Like, Steve Whitmire didn't really sound like Jim Henson at all. Actually, I feel like Steve Whitmire sounds a lot more like Jim's Kermit. Also, when he picked up some of Jerry Nelson's characters, he did a good job emulating them.
That’s Matt Vogel. He was initially Caroll Spinney’s understudy for Big Bird. Since Spinney retired back in October, Vogel is now Big Bird’s official performer
I always love Sesame Street and I want to write for it someday! But right now I feel they are making a handful of mistakes, especially the lack of people characters when compared to the large abundant of muppets. Right now all we have are Chris, Alan, Nina, and Charlie, ONLY FOUR! That's too little. Having so many muppets and monsters but so little people is like having kids run around with barley any adult supervision at all! Sesame Street needs real humans again (not inluding human muppets)

My 2 friends were recording me in P.E. today, & I didn’t like it, & Elmo is right, it’s important to be kind.
I am only 13 years old in 7th grade
That show is a legend.
Hopefully Sesame Street's next 50 years will be marvelous!
I’ve lived in nyc all my life and never knew SS was filled in queens! 😲
Big bird is my favorite character in Sesame street 😊
I always liked Kermit when he was on...
Kermit do not Kermit any more or neither is big bird they should retire to me dot new characters
Big bird: i thought I have grown an itch
Me: around the middle maybe
Sesame street will never be the same without Kevin Clash. 😔
SS existed long before Elmo/Clash. Plus, the new guy sounds exactly the same. You wouldn't know the difference if you weren't savvy to it.
But he still had a huge impact. Kevin knew Jim Henson and became the Muppet captain during that time
Back when Elmo was black & had soul . I know know.
Really Ryan Dillion sounds exactly the same.
@@icecreamhero2375 he actually doesn’t. I’m always aware that I’m listening to an impression. Listen to Kevin and Ryan back to back. If you listen you can tell the difference
happy 50th birthday I hope you got something special planned
I appreciate what Matt Vogel's doing, but I can't help but miss Carol Spinney...
IMO, i think Matt Vogel does a better job as Big Bird than he does as Kermit

We were the family in the video. It was such a lovely experience and they were all so nice and caring towards us all.
Sesame street 50th anniversary is in a couple days, I'm so excited
Sesame St season 50 will premiere in November 2019 take lots of pictures on my phone
I plan to watch the DVD featuring the show's very first episode on or near 11/10/2019 for the show's golden anniversary. I turn the big 5-0 myself in just 17 more days, on 4/14/2019.
Happy 50th Birthday Sesame Street! Keep this show alive.
at 4:36 hug me hug me NOW lol
Elmo is so adorable.
Im turning 48 this year and i still watch this show!! Love it!!
Thank you to everyone who has worked with and on Sesame Street to make it last this long. I hope to work on Sesame Street someday .
CBS Sunday Morning thank you for posting this video louder.
The Linda Ronstadt, and Sam Elliot were very difficult to hear on my full volume. 🎉Happy Birthday Sesame Street🎈 and VEGAS PBS 💟
thank you dad for all the Sesame Street toys I had growing up.
Big Bird makes me happy when I was a baby.
Great show created to help educate inner city children, many great childhood memories from this amazing public show!
i don't care what anyone says i will always love sesame street
Big Bird outlived my mum XD
Happy 50th anniversary Sesame Street!
Here's to, hopefully, many more years of education and entertainment to come.
Happy 50th Anniversary Sesame Street filled with stronger and kinder
Happy 50th birthday sesame street I love your show you taught me so much about life .
Thank you Sesame Street. For 50yrs of education, and fun story telling. Thank you giving our children the loveable Muppets. Here's to 50 more...
Happy 50th Birthday Sesame Street...and Many More. :-)
I remember sesame Street on Irish television when I was growing up in the early 80s. Loved it.
My childhood memories brought me here.
Happy 50th thanks for the laughs
here is hoping, that this will be the year, ALL the old episodes will finally be available to view online!!!
That would be great, but don't bet on it happening.
Such an amazing program for everyone.
I hope Sesame Street outlives us all.
Love this! Sesame’s getting up there too.
Give back my childhood
Superb segment Serena..
I can’t look at big bird these days without missing Carol Spinney.
Big Bird's voice was provided by Matt Vogel in this because Caroll Spinney retired from doing the voices of Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch after almost 50 years.
IMO, i think Matt Vogel does a better job as Big Bird than he does as Kermit
Mr Jim is my idol
Matt Vogel is the voice of Big Bird, he's six going on 16.
RIP Carrol Spinney😭
Happy Birthday! Thank you!! And Yes C is for Cookie. And it is good enough for me!
It's gonna take a long time to get use to the fact that Matt Vogel is now the official performer for Big Bird
IMO, i think Matt Vogel does a better job than he does as Kermit
Sesme Street Is now 52 Years old! IN 2021
Foley artists are great
My dream is always ,to be a gust star on Sesame Streets just to worked with them.
looking at the world today,i see how a great show like that failed to make us kinder
We should all be like Elmo and Grover. Just be kind.
Happy late birthday sesame street
😊 B-day. Turning the big 5-0. 🎂🎈🎉🎁 Congrats.
It's interesting they weren't (meaning Matt and Martain) introduced as Big Bird and Snuffy.
The Childhood Memories.....
I think it’s a shame that the Muppets proper (Kermit & co.) and other Henson properties have fallen by the wayside. I wish Sesame Street many more happy birthdays and hope that people continue to carry the torch and honor it’s rich legacy.
Big Bird has a different voice here
Sesame street, wonderful
Why does Big Bird sound different?
He is played by Matt Vogel, Caroll Spinney's Big Bird apprentice who is now taking over the role, since Caroll is now retired
@@marcodiaz6322 he's also Kermit now that Steve Whitmire's been fired. He's a pretty good puppeteer but I don't think he's the best impressionist
@@RossStern but he is still great
@@RossStern I mean, every time someone picks up a character, they have to put their own spin on it.
Since Spinney retired back in October, Vogel is now Big Bird’s official performer
ladies and gentleman, Matt Volger as *BIG BIRD!*
Matt Vogel
@@dillonohlemiller9027 whatever
Elmo is actually a pretty new character compared to the others. I don't know why he is the main character now.
When was Elmo introduced?
40 is the highest number to count all the way to on sesame street instead
Does anyone believe sesame street will ever end?
Your forgetting something Carol Spiney retired from the role last year and replaced him with someone else so thatls why his voice is different.
Dropping the jaw down instead of flapping the head up is so much harder than it looks!
Know what It is very important to us
I saw this on tv
💜
best babysitter i ever had. ahem...i watched too.
Anyone's welcome? So can you make a special on a criminal on the loose?
What about an Elmo's World movie.
