  • At the end of the first day at the 2023 Railroad Hobby Show in West Springfield, Massachusetts, Shane and Mike chatted about the important decisions we've made recently to address quality control concerns. They also shared a glimpse into the future of the HO SD40-2, talked about our first steam locomotive, and more.       Yes very true. Rapido & ST have set a new standard. I would like to see Broadway Limited to do the same!

      You need to get 1 and compare with everyone else. My friend the 3 best in the business are 1.Broadway Limited Imports 2. Scale trains 3 Rapido trains of Markham Ontario

      @@michaelfedora5630 I was not ranking model railroad companies, I was actually commenting on companies in general owning up to their mistakes and accepting their responsibility to their customers. I think most of these model railroad companies do a good job unlike say drug and automobile companies. Doing the right thing like scale trains is doing will cost them in the short term ,but will pay off long term.

      Rapido is a second good example of this. Being you and I are both BLI fans I can tell you we both wish they took ownership of their issues like ST here

    Sometimes doing things "the right way" doesn't always go as smoothly as anticipated. Glad you guys are addressing this so open and honestly. Seems like you're not only identifying the issues but also resolving and putting safety checks in place to ensure it doesn't happen again, which is perhaps the most important thing. That's more than some manufacturers would do.
    I'm proud to own Scale Trains models and will continue to buy from you!

    You are a stand up company. I had those tank cars on preorder, but I’m glad you all sent them back instead of sending them out. It’s much better to receive the news that the container was returned rather than receiving a model that was defective. Thank you for being honest.

    You guys are doing the right thing in every respect. A couple other manufacturers (who I won’t name here) have had many QC issues in the past few years and it’s created harm to their credibility in my circle of modelers. That certainly will never happen with ScaleTrains as long as you keep caring about the customer and being professionally open about the struggles.

    I’m new to the hobby and was very impressed with the products that I saw at the show as well as the Scale Trains associates which took time to talk to me. Watching this communication only confirms my decision that Scale Trains is the best choice above all others.     Guys - this is what sets you apart- dedication to quality and transparency. I teach leadership and management at university and in a lecture yesterday, we looked at the factors of successful companies and case studies. Amazon are a great example.     Wasn't really into ScaleTrains until they brought out the N scale Rivet Counter ET44, Canadian National/BC Rail Heritage loco! Ordered one and it had some minor issues, but was able to get a replacement in no time! A very professional model train company! I set up an account right after! Cheers!

    The fact that you go the extra effort to assure that the model's are what they are supposed to be. That is a big deal for you to do what you have done. I am impressed with your decisions to hold or return to the factory models that are not to your standard's. At this time I am sure that you all are going to get thru this. The best thing that makes us all human. Is we have a wonderful sense of respect. Things happen. At least you caught the issues before they were shipped to the customer.     I am glad that you addressed this. I bought a rivet counter model and the quality of the one I got was not that good. For an over $230 model I was very disappointed. My $150 operator series runs circles around it. Not giving up on Scale Trains but was disappointed in this purchase

    You guys are awesome! I didn't even know that my CSX model was inaccurate as I am not familiar with all of the Tier 4 GEVO's but I am happy to take a voucher for another purchase and renumbering the model to a prototype is fine with me. I love your dedication and to be quite frankly honest. Hornby and Accurascale could learn a lot from you in terms of quality control. Of which is why I moved to American N scale and I have loved it ever since. I hope you guys will consider doing an EMD GP40-2 in N scale with working ditchlights and a sound version. I am a loyal customer for life and I can assure you that I will help in any way I can with my ideas and suggestions. Have you considered making starter train sets and with the possibility of partnering up with Kato to make some Tier 4 GEVO train sets where ScaleTrains provides the locomotive and the wagons whilst Kato supply the track and controllers? As for the prices and demand for something like this. You will need to work out the viability but I think it would be a good way to promote the ScaleTrains Operator models in a train set that would be perfect for newcomers into the world of model railroading.

    We love having the option to buy Scaletrains products. Sounds like your issues center around impatience. Slow down, take care of your people and yourselves. And keep the product alive. No one dies from a bad series number on the train. Or a late arrival for gawd sakes. If you lose one unreasonable customer, its better that we have the option to buy the Scaletrains brand. Take it a bit easier folks. Stay alive and producing. A shade of color difference also is rediculous, real trains are outside and exposed to environment, which changes colors etc. Thanks Scaletrains, Ill keep buying.

    Wow, how refreshing!
    I recently ordered 2 N scale C45AH GEVo units and pre-ordered one HO ES44AC, based only on word-of-mouth and online reviews. I'm just getting back into the hobby, and have never seen a Scale Trains product in the flesh. After seeing this video I feel much better about my decision, because now I know that this company stands firmly behind their products and actually values their customers.

    Congratulations on coming out and admitting you've had "issues" glad you have taken this path, hope it all works out for your company, there is a large producers in Canada that could take a leaf of of your book.
    I only have one scale trains locomotive and I love it, I have been waiting for the SOO SD40-2 since you first released the SDs, sadly I am very disappointed that you have gone with the 2 cab side windows not the 4 windows, I understand it would have required much more work to get the model into production, I will keep waiting with my fingers crossed it will come one day.

    Thank you, Shane and Mike, for addressing issues that confronting the company in recent months. Thank you, Shane, for also responding to my comment on a previous video. Maybe someday we can meet and chat a little bit. That more or less be at Trainfest in Milwaukee. From it sounds like and the timing of everything, it sounds like COVID had something to with some of the problems. Shane, you mentioned in one of your videos that you would visit your plant a couple times a year. With COVID that was not possible and totally rely on your dec samples. Now other manufactures usually on average get about 3 to 4 samples plus any tooling revision samples before ever going into production. This what Rapido has learned over the years to do to overcome their issues with their first releases. And I think they're the first ones in the industry to do that. But, I think it was smart to save time and money to go and visit the plant and make any revisions over there than to go back and forth. But, of course, COVID hit. There are still more questions and suggestions I have. First, and foremost, is that you need to put an exploded parts diagram in with your locomotives like you do with your cars. Secondly, get rid of thoughs truck holders and form it into the clamshell mold. I think that would be a cost saver in the long run if you're always talking about price point. My question is about the HO SDL39. Is the tooling going to be remade to fix the coupler issue or are just going include a washer to clear the issue? I'm excited that you're doing another run of SD45's and I think you have done enough ET and GEVO's for the time being. Since you have already done most of the models that MTH did from the GEVO's to the GP35, are you not going to do any of the MTH diesels? Thank again for the video and keeping us customers up to date. Hopefully, you will answer my questions and take some of my suggestions.

    I'm a production lead manufacturing of medical equipment. I can understand fully how mistakes are missed, and I know how this financially can effect a company. I always say, better QC control is a main stay. You need very Stringent QC procedures and better Floor QC on the production floor. You know which way you need to go, key is to getting there. Production Audits is your friend! Do more frequent Audits.

      I think they only fessed up to the budd manor/sleeper paint issue because of customer complaints - otherwise, they would have said nothing. The F59PH is a terrible locomotive right out of the box.... the rear hood wasn't even attached on mine, class lights that don't work. Rapido then has no problem releasing garbage for the customer to buy, knowing it's garbage, i.e. Turbo 1.0. They then re-release products because the first run was garbage/not up to standard. Simply put, there are too many items getting by inspection and too many apology emails. Companies that bill themselves as 'museum quality' shouldn't even have a 'warranty/repair department'

      2 of the 3 Rapido F40PH locos I bought had issues. Broken/ missing parts, etc. And it was 6 months to recieve replacement parts to fix. On the other hand, ALL my Scaletrains locos have been flawless.

    I know I have mentioned small things like parts falling off during shipping and that will never be completely eliminated. For the most part those are easy fixes for modelers. You might consider adding an exploded drawing to your website where folks can report those incidents and you would be able to see which parts might need to be addressed. Keep after it, you'll fix it.

    Things will work out. Keep them coming. I truly wish you guys would do the Early Trinity 5851 (No End Cut Outs, 2 variants) and the Late 6421 capacity plastic pellet covered hoppers. Many reporting markings and shades of gray including beige. A general service tank car like a UTLX 25,000 gallon plus and the 16,000 gallon panda bear and black painted car are a must.
