I gotta say, I hadn't picked up a guitar in years until a few months ago. I wasn't sure I'd even be able to get back at it. Long story short, i stumbled upon your videos. Not only am i excited to pick up the guitar every day again, but your concise and super easy way of teaching has me interested in the theory side. Something i thought I'd never comprehend. As soon as im comfortable enough, I'll be enrolled in your classes. Thanks for helping bring the true sense of music back into my grasp.
Thank you for this comment, James. There’s nothing more satisfying for me than to know I’ve inspired someone to explore the fretboard. Looking forward to working with you.
Jist joined the patreon and have a 3 day weekend to dig through it. I'm 47 years old and just picked the guitar up 2 months ago. I bought a brand new strat and have a couple aucoustic guitars. Really looking foward to this 🎸👨🍳
I consider that you were lucky to open this nugget early. I spent 35 years on and off (mostly off) playing guitar with cowboy chords never venturing into the dark realm of the dusty end of the neck. I would loved to have seen this 34 years ago. I may never set my guitar down again. It's inspiring.🥰
I have seen so many videos about finding the root note of the chord all over the neck. Then you get a blazing fast demonstration of all the same note across all the strings in every scale degree.💩That is really good for shaming me right out of the box.🤬 THIS video shows how.🥰 Very powerful information. Thank you.😁
This tutorial takes me way back to early 2004 when I took my first guitar lesson. My former teacher would always stress the importance of practicing scale and triad studies, so I made sure to set the ground work in place. Fast forward 20 yrs. I think it’s fair to say that my fretboard knowledge is pretty good! I love your teaching style and if I were learning the instrument today I wouldn’t hesitate in joining your community. 👍😎
The best theory lessons in the business 🤯 This big scary fretboard that was overwhelming to me 2 years ago is just a big map to different sounds. Your lessons have been the key to that map. Thank you, sir.
When I realized this a few years ago I totally began to understand how the songs I knew how to play were played in the position they were in... great content and a great little secret. Thanks for sharing!
God bless this channel. Here is my hack. Remember the perfect 5th is above the root always and the 6th note of any major scale is where the tasty pentatonics begin.
Conscious intense intentional organized repetition. Know the notes you whant to play, map them with your eyes on the fretboard then play them. Like in a piano thats why Wes has his eyes on the fretboard and his position of the guitar
Dude i love your videos! Ive fallen in love with guitar over the past year and a half of my life and ive done nothing but play guitar in that time and most of my “oh wow that makes sense now” moments have come from watching your videos definitely going to join the patreon today see you there!
Excellent lesson Mr Chris. Thank you for making this so simple 💯👍 . I don’t know if you would, but if you could do a lesson on setting the amp, it would be greatly appreciated
I like the way you take a concept I already know about and understand, and just help me understand it better and give me new ideas for practicing with that concept.
Natural Minor hits all of the notes in A Major.....if you want to learn where A-G find the positions location using your Index finger with A as your base. Learn the fret numbers for each string....they are: E 5 A 0 D 7 G 2 B 10 It is another repeatable pattern you can use to get comfortable with positioning. Each position is the exact same excluding the B string.....Good luck!
Yay , diagonal scales theory , Starting on the root note of the scale like i learned the Sax decades ago , This is much more logical , can I ditch the 5 pattern crap now ? 😅
Full TABs are here: Patreon.com/chrissherland Did you do the octave linking with the pentatonic scale already? That phrase is just an example, the method is far more important than the example here.
I see octaves as the most primal and neutral form of scale in a way- just a straight line from one root to the next with no stops on the way. I think more teachers should encourage us to first think in octaves as they really are the most fundamental points of orientation for navigating in any musical key. Subdivisions of octaves are much less significant to the overall key of the music in my opinion and a good knowledge of your octaves is foundational and so much more key (pun intended) to one's fretboard orientation. Once you know where your roots and octaves lie, it is SO much easier to visualise and understand the various different paths between them. Which is all scales really are.
Oh! yes you hear what you play but previously you have to target the key or the fret with the intention@curiousguitarist Wiith practice the things you hear in mind you will know we're to find
I always advise my students to play without looking as much as possible. Nothing else develops your ear hand coordination better!! Thank you for the comments and discussion

Of course! And thank YOU JC, for all your support!

Thanks Tim!!!
This is one of the Golden Keys to Fretboard Freedom, and you have clearly and thoroughly demonstrated it with flair!
Panache even?

Great comment! I’d say in order I’ve value, ears are best to lead, then brain, then I put eyes last :)
Thanks Chris this really opens up all the notes across the fretboard. Thanks for sharing this.
You bet, Jeff!
Well holy shit, I can't believe I never saw this before. From one Chris to another....Thank you Chris!
Hey Chris. Yeah, and you cannot in-know this now. The fretboard just became smaller and more manageable.

Yes, octave linking works with any scale at all, chord voicings too.
And for A major I believe you’re trying to point out F# natural minor correct?
