- Rutger Hauer arrives early at Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia in Milan. There, a restricted number of journalists and students met the deep and glacial gaze of the legendary replicant Roy Batty, the character who went down in the history of cinema with "that" sentence that we have all said, at least once in our lifetime: «...I've seen things you people wouldn't believe...». The 30th anniversary of "Blade Runner", milestone of science fiction cinema and unquestioned masterpiece by Ridley Scott, is one of the reasons why Hauer was in Milan. In our report, the Dutch actor retraces the crucial moments of that extraordinary cinematographic experience.

The sad thing is that Hollywood never used, or recognized Rutger Hauer's unique and special talent - like Ridley Scott did.

Paul Verhoeven used him a lot during their Dutch movie making years, though. You should see those films .Excellent body of work, including an extraordinary movie set in the Middle Ages.
I did not know about his drinking, sad, but lots of actors are insecure and resort to whatever gets them overs their real or imaginated fears; as, of course, most of us to too.
So strange that he died at the end of Blade Runner and it was set in 2019.

Rutger Hauer, one of the most criminally underrated actors of all time. I felt it when I heard the news of his passing. He will not be lost in time like tears in the rain. RIP.

@@Retr0ver4 If you look at his IMDB page, he was actually an extremely prolific actor, and was usually working on anywhere from 2-8 projects a year. Unfortunately, most of them were small parts, and his bigger parts were usually low budget and often lowbrow films like Hobo with a Shotgun, Blood of Heroes, and The Hitcher. I think this affected his brand because he was in so many small roles and low budget movies that nobody ever saw or heard of. "Soldier of Orange", based on a real WWII Dutch hero, was the 1977 Dutch movie he made with director Paul Verhoeven, and this was the breakout movie that brought both to the attention of Hollywood. It's also one of his best movies, and worth seeing.

I saw him about ten years ago.
He ordered a coffee at the bar where I was working. I was stunned since I did not expect to see him at that time and place.
He noticed it, winked, smiled and thanked me for the coffee.
Truly a modest and polite man. I can say I'm honoured to have served him.

+Reb3nga I had a similar experience. In 1989 I had bought a new motorbike and went to the dealer to pick it up. Outside stood a big white motorhome.
There where two new bikes outside standing next to eachother; Mine, a full on sports bike and an all white huge Honda Goldwing with all bells and whistles and a little trailer in the same livery.
I stood bend over my new pride and joy looking at all the details when I heard a voice saying 'nice bike you have'. Looking up I directly stared in the face of Rutger Hauer. All I could say was 'you too' (he was a youth hero of mine playing in a tv serie Floris in 1969 so it was a bit of a big deal to meet him). Then we shatted a while about our bikes and his big motorhome (which could store the Goldwing btw). Very friendly gentle man. Very nice to have met him.

It's rare in a movie where the villain is the audience and the hero is the person in your day to day life (depending on who you are) that is making your life worse... The established morons of the current power system.

I'm 37 and I've just seen this film for the first time in my life. A masterpiece. And the soundtrack from Vagelis was simply orgasmic for the ears. I can't believe I missed this film. Better late than never I guess.
Ah man really? well i guess better late than never :) only downfall is i would say is you wont feel the same nostalgia when i see this movie from my childhood or the feeling when you hear the music, but glad you enjoy it cause it's amazing!!

I'd give a lot to be able to see this movie for the first time again heh. Awesome experience. Truly mind blowing.
Sounds like a very good choice, it is so easy to miss out on truly great movies if one just stays with the current titles. I watched Blade runner when it came out, but of course i didn't learn to appriciate it until maybe 10 years later. Since i was just 5 at the time haha! i have little recollection of that moment but i re-watched it several times later. I have a list of movies that i think movie buffs shouldn't miss out on at any cost. Blade runner is definately amongst the top of the chart.
I grew up watching Jason and the argonauts from -63 and The journey to the centre of the earth from -59
it just rolled on from there. If you haven't seen any of those, i really recommend it. There is something about the special effects from the time that makes the movies alot more human. And doesn't distract from the journey or the messages or the plot.

racketman2u So Roy’s response was to crush his Creators head with his bare hands and gouge his eyes out! After he said I want more life, effer! And that scene shocked me!
I always thought of Roy as being a self-aware child who would murder in rage as a result of confusion resulting from a lack of childhood. He killed his "father"in a fit of rage once he realized that even Tyrell could not prolong his life. Roy finally matures and realizes his humanity when he saves Decker from falling.

For me this film almost 40 years old has the most authentic feeling of any futuristic SciFi picture. All the CGI and other tech haven't come close to capturing the same experience. The actors the scenary, the music which is huge just makes it feel as real as it gets. One of the best movies ever made.

Mike T I remember seen it as a kid and the use of Ford was brilliant contradiction to the fluffy Star Wars movies , it should not have worked but it did says a lot about Ford as an actor and how he could transcend been typecast as Solo , Hauer was a revelation in his role , I’m surprised he never popped up in a Tarantino movie .

As someone who grew up alone and unloved by those around me, Roy's words touched my soul in a way no movie ever has before or since. The pain and loss of your entire life experience vanishing unshared and unseen into the void is soul rending. Roy expressed these feelings in a way that instantly resonated with me. It hurt me to my core, and still does today. Roy and I are very much alike, both trapped in a world we don't really understand, filled with thoughts and feelings nobody else seems to want to share or care about, wondering what we did that was so wrong. In the end, we all just want to be seen and loved by someone.
I do truly understand friend that is beyond words.
Thank you for your honest and very personal comment. That's the magic of art, it speaks to us of the truths deep inside us that we don't even know how to articulate. BR is my favorite movie, and I can't imagine anyone but Rutger playing Roy. I hope you find someone who does care about your thoughts & feelings & wants to share them with you. Best wishes.

David Joe In test screenings the audience sympathized with Roy. The studio freaked out. Hence one of the reasons for the terrible voice over version.

Love the twist that he was the good guy all along and wanted to spare Deckards life to know that he was only a human who didn't have long to live and all he wanted was to live and was forced to be Slave and then hunted down like an animal. I'm guessing he didn't wanna be controlled so he escaped. Deckard had no idea that he was killing slaves. How awful poor Roy. Deckard is used as a bounty hunter to kill slaves as sport for I'm guessing the bad leader couldn't control them.

I am allways amazed how one of the most popular actors of that time, having starred as Han Solo and Indiana jones is being played against a wall, performance wise. And no I am not saying he played his part badly, its just Rutger's performance was so breathtaking...

I saw Bladerunner when it first came out. It blew me away then and still blows me away. Rutger was a superb actor and this interview reveals the depth and soul of the man. The flesh may be gone but the iconic image of Rutger as Roy is immortal.

Rutgar was such a gentle, well-spoken man. Some may remember him from Blind Fury, or Split Second, or even the Guinness adverts! But for me, his dying monologue at the climax of Blade Runner was imperious. I'm too old to be even commenting to be honest, but I've shed my fair share of tears watching and re-watching the Tears in Rain speech. Truly touching.

Well that s precisely the point of thé movie. Show that thé replicants are more human than humans themselves. At thé vert first scène you already see it. Hosen is doing voigt kamp test. You can see Leon has émotions, when Hosen stays cold as a robot, that s the irony.

I re-watch Blade Runner about once a year in a pitch black room by myself, it is the only movie I do this with. Sure - if you really analyze it there are plot holes. But the key to Blade Runner is not to over-analyze but to go with the style, feel and message of the movie. It's sci-fi pulp-fiction but it also reveals something about humanity's soul. Don't agree? Your loss.

I did this over Winter Break. The cinematography of this movie is amazing. The movie came out in 1982 but looked like it was produced in 2012.
+shingnosis That's absolutely right. The plot is *good enough*, but it's a movie you have to feel more than anything else...let it wash over you, preferably with a good smokey whisky in your hand. (I recommend Talisker or Laphroaig.)

Daniel Appleton Just view this movie again after 2 decades. I got that feeling too and felt more sympathy for his character this time around. Wasnt much a follower of RH work then but checking out some of his more popular roles. Very under rated actor & I hope he was placed in roles with more range than just 'bad guy villan ' roles. But guess will find out.:)

Flesh+Blood, The Hitcher, Ladyhawke are three other great movies with Rutger Hauer who is one of my favorite actors. Dire Straits, INXS, Eurythmics, Talk Talk, Simple Minds, AC/DC, ZZ Top, Cock Robin, ABBA, The Police... It just goes on and on... The vibe of 80s just can't be beaten.
i have never met Rutger, but when i was younger i started to collect things, and i found his poster on ebay, listed by his STARFISH foundation. i bought it, and asked him via email if he could personalize it for me.
his assistant told me that this is impossible, because Rutger was in Italy back then...but Rutger will prepare something for me.
couple of weeks later i got his picture from the famous scene wit h the quote: i ve seen things you people wouldnt believe... - to Piotr, with a little heart drawn.

Rutger Hauer has an incredible charm and way of expressing himself that no-one else can. He just oozes intelligence and charisma, with a slight edge of danger. Brilliant performer.

"The Blood Of Heroes" aka "The Salute Of The Jugger" with RH and Joan Chen is also a great film I rewatched many times, but doesn't come close to Blade Runner.
Legendary action actor
Funny. I noticed that every SciFi movie I have ever watched, was a picture of the time it was created in. All the hopes, dreams, and fears of the age it was made in shine through.
Not with Blade Runner. Blade Runner is timeless, and it's ageless. A true masterpiece. Thanks to the crew that made this possible. Thanks to Vangelis for creating the perfect music to accompany this. Thanks Rutger for carrying this.

So much of Science fiction is a mirror, an artifice for the current times political and social aspects. Blade Runner does not have this. Marry that with music that is emotionally centered, sets and technology that are not comical or outrageous, rather realistic and completely feasible and performed with authenticity, you get a timeless masterpiece. People can argue the story is an issue and that is of course fine, because story is personal and subjective. But Blade Runner is at the top of the cinema pyramid.
I think Phillip K Dick would have loved this movie.

Amazing how well Blade Runner holds up to modern Sci Fi. In every aspect, effects, story, characters, everything.
I agree. I say the same thing about John Carpenter's "The Thing." With all the advancement in special effects over the past 25 years, few sci-fi horror films can still match Carpenter's remake of the classic.

My grandfather took me to see this movie when it came out. I was 15. I loved it.
But most of all I loved that it felt like my grandfather was sharing a glimpse of something way off in the distance with me.
Right up there with the day he used the last of his firecrackers to teach me how to set them off, and still keep all my fingers.

I must be about 10 years younger than you, but remember my parents watching BladeRunner from a VHS recording in the late 80s, when I was about 13. I've since watched it many times on DVD/BlueRay, and will finally get to watch it tomorrow evening at a cinema, thanks to the BFI for organising this one-off showing across the UK !

visually Blade Runner is still one of the most interesting/amazing films made to date. and Like Brazil, when it came out the studio executives did not understand or appreciate it's brilliance and tried to change it to fit their own limited cognitive faculties...
a lot of things happen in the background of Brazil and it's easy to miss them. especially look at the posters and what they say or how they have been altered to say something else
such as the sign at the Shangri la apartments that Sam goes visits to deliver the refund check to Mrs Buttle for her husbands interrogation over charge ...someone has scrawled Shan-Gorilla apartments across them...that's just one example. there's a lot of behind the scenes stories and facts that make Brazil a lot of fun...just like Blade Runner, it's appreciated more by the fans than the hollywood system pretends to care

I saw hundreds of movies - most of them forgotten.
But this scene will stay forever, as it is such a deep feeling in all of human beeings - begging for more life. And accepting when its over and make peace with the moment... all those moments are lost in time... like tears in .. rain.
I agree, most of todays movie makers think (if they ever do) that they can get away with explosions, car chases and foul language. Wit and Intelligence seem to have been ...lost in time...like tears... in the Rain....

I would say it would be in disapointed about the audio quality of the interview. It sounds like they used the on-camera microphone recording a live PA in a room where it's constantly about to feed back if not feeding back! Even if they'd just got a direct from desk feed that would've been something. Shame to have such a great man's story about a great film told through poor sound.

In the end, the replicant taught the human how to feel human. Up until then, Deckard had seemed to be drifting in an empty sea emotionally.
I agree with Harrison Ford, that Deckard was not a replicant. It makes the story much more interesting.

Budgie Cat The unicorn dream is only in one version of the movie, not in all versions. There were disagreements between the people that made the movie about adding that in. So that dream will depend on your own personal feelings about if its true or not. Personally I choose the versions without it, because it makes the story better and it makes more sense.

Duke J That's true. Plus I like at how Deckard seemed to be in a bit of a funk in his life. Just living alone, drinking a lot. He wasn't really living. And then it took 2 replicants, Rachel and Roy, to teach him how to feel and be human again. I like the irony of a replicant teaching a lost human how to be human.
Budgie Cat I feel its more of a sign that there is more than just life... some things that are not explainable yet might occur anyway. In this case, he sees the image of his dreams through signs... In fact, Roy's speech gave him a whole new view on life, especially looking at the miracles it might bring and that made him more aware of it.
Roy Batty is one of the few cinematic " villains " ( & I use that term loosely here ) that I can feel ( much ) more than a little sympathy for. The guy just wants more & better life, plain & simple.
Roy was a great "villain", because he had character, and was not just a two dimensional amalgam of all the worst, most clichéd aspects of bad people.

For much of his time onscreen I considered Roy a villain, though as you say a rather sympathetic one. But at the very end he becomes an immortal hero.

Through the years I have re-watched Blade Runner on dvd, and this scene comes back to my mind unbidden at random times, as though to remind me of my mortality and the evanescence of beautiful or spectacular sights and events I have witnessed as I approach my end (not so far off now).
I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time... like tears in rain... Time to die.
And the way he spoke those "Shakespearean" lines were crucial to the soul within them.
As a combat veteran in Vietnam, betrayed by our own country, I can strongly feel how that little speech laid open my pain; a pain that separates us from the civilians/politicians who creat wars and sennd us to fight.
Interesting perspective. The soldiers who fought in Vietnam. Trained, armed and sent into a chaotic environment came back to a country with scant understanding of the reality of it. That make me think of the soldiers of Iraq, Afghanistan, eastern Europe and God knows what else.
RIP Rutger Hauer - you saw the future 30 years ahead of its time and now you are beyond life itself.

This was a fabulous interview. I saw the movie in the theater when it first came out and was astounded by it. I knew we had stepped into a new medium with it.
The cool thing about Rutger Hauer is that he still loves it, appreciates the effect of it, is not jaded by it, and authentically reproduces in this interview the verse of his life, rather than the bloated remnants that become most great actors as years pass.
Hauer’s monologue at the end literally made that movie into the classic that it is. Everyone was great but Hauer encapsulated the theme of the movie and made you care deeply for the androids in the most articulate and beautiful way-great collaborative film making

Agreed - I'm nervous about this new movie. It needs to be something worthy of the original or it shouldn't be made. I'm afraid it will be some kind of 'Blade Runner 2: Kingdom of the Crystal Skull' that attempts to imitate the style of the original without the heart or script to go with it...

Although many would agree that would be amazing, letting the audience imagine all the things he has seen gives infinite possibilities rather than a finite story. A work of art such as this deserves to be immortal in both directions. =D

It would have to be an independent effort, if at all, without any heavy reliance on CGI such as what they did with the Mutant Ninja Turtles recently (all the characters were computer generated and it sucked the life out of the movie).

This and Mad Max the Original Australian Version are my 2 favorite Films .. I saw both of them with my Father when I was under 10 years old, He snuck me in as an adult as they weren't rated for children.

Rutgar Hauer is an enigma! His role in Blade Runner is a look to the future. I appreciate that I saw the original release. I will never love Rutger Hauer any less. The scene where his character Roy Batty dies is tremendously mocking. This will always be the greatest death scene in any film ever made.
I've seen and loved many great performances in many great movies, but Rutger Hauer as Roy Batty moved me more than, I think, anything I've ever seen on screen. The horrible irony of a replicant understanding humanity better than humans do, moved me so, and still does to this day. I'm glad he was aware of the effect his role had on people, as now I'll never have the chance to tell him so myself. RIP Rutger/Roy.
I am overjoyed to see this interview of Rutger Hauer...I LOVE HIM!!! He has this little boyish quality no matter what his age that just makes you want to hug him! LOL And I cannot imagine anyone else playing Roy Batty...he was absolutely the PERFECT choice. That final scene in Blade Runner where Roy Batty dies is truly moving which I think speaks to Mr. Hauer's depth as an actor and also the depth of this otherwise sci-fi film. It is a masterpiece - gorgeous on so many levels - and, along with 2 other films, made me a Ridley Scott fan as well.

I was a kid. Saw it on cable and couldn't believe "Han Solo" was so dark. But Ford took a back seat to Hauer in this one, he stole the show. His look and his speech. And yes, that line of dialogue. I looked for him in everything before and after that. He will be good even if the material is questionable. You can't Not like him as an actor.
I was a lucky man to have been a mid teenager watching this film 6 times in the cinema when it was released truly blessed . R I P

Goosebumps every time I hear that line "I've seen things you people wouldn't believe" just fantastic. Makes me think so much about life contemplating what I am who created me. Also the idea we could possibly create life that could think for itself and then question us it's own creator in that explorative, mysterious, condescending, and superior manner which Batty delivers that famous line.
Rest well now. Your star has burnt long and bright. You will not be forgotten.

Thanks also to P. Dick for the story, Scott for directing the masterpiece and Hauer for a superb interpretation in a difficult, yet immortal, role which will never be forgotten by true cinema lovers, especially the sci-fi ones. I really hope a remake of it will never happens. Blade Runner doesn't need a remake, it's still modern even if it was filmed 30 years ago, it's immortal, it will never get old. A remake will be a total crap as always or, even worse, they will name it Blade Runner while it will be something else just to try dodge bad critics. This is something I would pay actually not for help them makes it, but to stop them to do it... like, here my 100 euros, please go back home and quit this madness... leave this masterpiece alone, go do some crappy remake of something else.

Roy Batty is deemed the villain. For myself Roy Batty is severely misunderstood. He was created to unleash violence. However, his Prowess to grasp the profoundness and joy of literary works his destiny was to be a poet laureate. He doesn't kill because He has no empathy. He kills due to the Powers who controlled Humanity have no empathy For Him and His companions. Roy Batty doesn't just want more life from the corporation and society that created him. Roy Batty wants to revel in the joy, artistry, and passion that life can be if one truly strives for it. In that realm Roy Batty is more Humane than the Society who created Him. Then ultimately wished to discard Him.
