I'm a translator and used to have a job (!) in the dubbing industry (I'm a Latina). I gotta say, we should be cherishing the translator brave enought to use those words and all the people behind that allowed them to do it. Because I surly tried to make my translations as gay as possible when I had the opportunity but usually it was watered down in post production :(

I always suspected that Giles from Buffy the Vampire Slayer was bi. He had relationships with women on the show and he also had Ethan. His relationship with Ethan Rayne always gave me an ex-lovers feeling. Giles’ rebellious phase magic, tattoos, and Ethan.
Lucifer has at least 2 canonically bi characters - Lucifer and Maze. We don't see it from Lucifer on screen so much, but we do see it from Maze much more.

The show that convinced me nearly everyone was bi af (except for willow being a lesbian of course, and xander being aggressively straight), and also traumatized me so much from Tara’s death that it single-handedly kept me from realizing I was a lesbian for years 🧍♀️. According to Joss it was a 50/50 split on whether Willow or Xander was going to be gay but since lesbians were far less threatening to the male demographic Willow was a lesbian.

Neil Gaiman actually confirmed that Aziraphale and Crowley's story in the show was a romantic love story, but it can't really be labelled as "gay/bisexual/pansexual" since they technically don't have genders. Someone asked if they could interpret the characters as nonbinary in an asexual romantic relationship and he said yes. He's confirmed that they are in love.
And there's still a possibility of season 2, so there's no telling if they'll be explicit in the second season.

book fans have long recognized Aziraphale & Crowley as being "ineffable husbands": agender immortal life-partners. they don't have human genitalia nor libido but can mimic the former if they "make an effort" (quote). so. asexual by default.
(but not necessarily sex-repulsed nor wholly celibate)
on Crowley: while he is a demon, he was an angel first & he is never mentioned as being personally involved in physical seduction. furthermore, his demonic co-workers seem more disgusted by humans than anything else.
aziraphale the angel on the other hand? HE HUNG OUT WITH OSCAR WILDE. if anyone in this partnership has sexual curiosity and experience, it's aziraphale.

i know it’s not news at all but for the Think of the Children section, Lance and Keith from voltron legendary defender comes to mind. they were supposed to be endgame and would have been great representation for the kids watching the show (bc even though a lot of teens and adults watched it it was meant for kids) and would’ve been a great thing to see had the writers been allowed to follow through on it. they set it up with pure intent for romance and then had to throw it all away for the studio

After seeing good omens season 2, it’s rather funny to see this section now
something that i love about nbc hannibal is that not only the writers, but the cast as well supports hannibal and will's relationship being romantic. yes, it is pretty annoying when fuller hesitates to make any clear-cut statements on what their relationship is and when he describes will as "fully heterosexual", but it's nice to see a show where denying the romantic text between two same-gender characters is straight up just ignoring the plot. it literally becomes so obvious in s3 lmaooo who tf says "if i could see you everyday forever will, i would remember this time" to their bestie? not me.

Also Charles Xavier and Magneto. In the 90's animated television series they are "enemies" in season 1. In season 2 they get a mysterious message each telling the other they are dying and want to see each other. It's a trick and they spend nearly the entire time together alone in the Savage Land. My eyes were open then I was just like how does this happen calling your enemy to spend your last days with him pick up and run off just like that? After that I shipped them hard.

Something about what Alex said here really struck me. People really only go, “Why can’t guys just be really good bros?” when it’s fans talking about how they read a particular relationship as gay. You hardly ever see those kinds of critics comment on toxic masculinity in any other context. And it’s frustrating because these characters usually don’t end up being canonically, visibly gay anyway!

Cishet men tend to fear gay men because they see that as being weak or a failure when in actuality most gays are way stronger because of the oppression we face. So they are in fact linked. It doesnt help that when cis men and cis women even look at each other too fondly theyre instantly seen as some secret couple. Its gross. Just let people be friends and let gays exist..
I remember this exact fucking comment in the early days of Torchwood about Jack/Ianto, where the slashers started taking note of the increased Jack/Ianto moments as eps went on and going '...I think this is getting towards canon' and other fans in the lj community were going 'clearly just Jack flirting, Ianto's straight, stop projecting'. The maniacal laughter/fandom scream at 'lots of things you can do with a stopwatch' could be heard from space.

It even happens when the fans explicitly say that that's how they interpret it and that they understand it's not canon. And then there's all these people yelling at often fairly young fans for having opinions which in the kindest of contexts is still being a dick.
It's one of those things so many people don't care about until someone suggests male characters might be gay or bisexual. It's frustrating.
Being a millennial but also having stepped out of the late nineteenth century, one of my favorites is Jeeves and Bertie from Wodehouse's "Jeeves" stories-- they're portrayed with SUCH good chemistry by Fry and Laurie in the 90's TV series, and... well... Bertie literally calls himself a "confirmed bachelor" in the stories and he and Jeeves are basically a literal old married couple in the (chronologically) final story in the series.
I completely agree about the Buffy and Faith thing. I mean, even before you mentioned it I thought of that dance scene, and dang what a POWERFUL DUO!!! Also, the part about Faith and Spike being like the only two people to not be okay with everyone kicking Buffy out of the house in the final season, and how Faith was very happy to lead, but once Buffy got back she didn't even hesitate to step back and let Buffy do her thing. Faith wouldn't have done something like that, put someone else first without second thought when she'd just gotten what she'd wanted that for so long, other than Buffy. Faith respects Buffy so much by the end of the series, and Buffy respects her back even though Faith was the "bad slayer". They both saw the good and the bad in each other, and damn that sexual tension! Also, I am such a fan of the Spike and Buffy ship, but yeah I would've loved to have seen at least a season dedicated to Faith and Buffy being romantically involved, even if they didn't become endgame.

@@iamqueenkk while I understand why Neil Gaiman might not want to make significant changes if you look at Pratchett's work, especially his later work, there really is nothing to suggest that Pratchett would have been offended by the change. He was always sensitive to changes in culture and would see why it is more important to include representation than be faithful to adaptation, I believe. Even if they could have just explicitly discussed it - even having Aziraphale talk about the angels are sexless thing - I would have liked that.

when are tv execs gonna learn that representation is not only good for the lgbt community and society as a whole, but also there are a TON of straight audiences too who want to see these stories on screen as well because they are interesting, make sense, usually have way more build up than straight couples and are inherently better to watch.... they leave gay rep out as to not alienate straight audiences but I think they vastly underestimate how many people care as in would be mad, and tbh there are way more who would step in to watch should any audiences turn away ...... honestly they keep holding up some status quo that I don’t even think exists anymore smdh

i'm bi, and I had a Portuguese teacher (because i'm brazilian, but it's the same as an english teacher) when I was 14 and hadn't acknowledged my bissexuality yet, and she was lesbian AND she was also my neighbour, I remember playing with her niece when I was 8 or 9. So, this teacher was openly gay and I was always mesmerized by her, the way she talked, the way she explained stuff, and it took me years to realize that I wasn't just idolizing her as my hero, I actually had a bit of a crush on her LOL
