- At 72 years of age Amitabh Bachchan is arguably still the most famous name in India's multi-billion dollar Hindi-language film industry.
When you sit inside a darkened hall to watch a film, you never question the caste, creed or religion of the person sitting next to you. Yet you see the same film, you laugh at the same jokes, you cry at the same sentiments, sing the same songs. I doubt there are many institutions left in the world which can boast of such integration.

To his many devoted fans, "Big B," as he is known, is far more than just an actor - he is an Indian institution, a legend.
His fans mob him on the streets, wait outside his house each Sunday to see him, and when he was seriously ill they held vigils to pray for his recovery. A prolific user of social media, he has 13 million Twitter followers.
That popularity and fame has given him access to the country's leading politicians and decision makers.
He once counted the Gandhi family as close friends and briefly entered the world of politics in the 1980s. By his own admission, it was not a successful career move.
"I don't know politics, and I realised that after having won an election, I was not qualified. I had entered politics on an emotional note, and soon realised that emotions had nothing to do with politics," he told Al Jazeera.
But his work in film and television continues, as does his influence. Bachchan has made more than 180 movies during his 45-year career - his latest film, Shamitabh, was released in early February.
He is a passionate defender of Hindi-language cinema - known the world over as Bollywood - despite accusations that it is sexist, demeans women, and fails to deal with serious and political issues.
"We do tackle many issues that are socially and morally concerning in India. Indeed all our films do. We always show that good will prevail over evil. We have a very vast and strong cultural identity; over 5,000 years of culture, and that is always depicted in our films," he said.
We discuss Bollywood past and present, religion, and Indian politics as Amitabh Bachchan talks to Al Jazeera.

I am Australian and lived in India in the eighties and saw some of this man's movies. I remember the great affection and esteem that the Indian people held him in. So very good to see him still well and showing great integrity and grace.

A great honour to be in this country which has given birth to such an awesome and versatile actor, who has made his image of( the angry man) the title given to him of his role in film Zanzeer. He is working since 1969 and still the same love, respect for him by the audience till now as he used to be in those times. He is not only famous we can say globally of his contribution to hindi cinema but also his way of treating others whether a big person holding a post or normal person in the same manner which has made him more respected person of Indian society.

I grew up watching Amitah though I don't watch Indian movies. Another actor that was popular in my childhood years was Dalamandara (sorry for the mispronunciation). Amitah lasted in this industry longer than any of his peers. That's a testimony of his level of knowledge and people skills.

After the dilip kumar, although many of us of this age might not be aware of his old films, but still many actors of today time like sharukh Khan consider him as his idol. Nice interview but Mr. Bachchan I hope you get this that right now in 2016 we have around 33,000 job seekers that enter the workforce every day. Indian Ministry of Human Resources Development recently released a document that stated this fact and it is estimated that there will be 104.62 million fresh entrants into the workforce by 2022 that's 10.46 crore that's about 50,000 new job seekers a day ! Hence, we need to bring in strict family planning laws, it is HIGH TIME ! I'm afraid, you are wrong on the "population" issue ! It is the biggest bane for us.

Politicians use celebrities like Bachchan, to promote their parties the same way Bachchan uses Comedy nights with Kapil to promote Bhoothnath 2. Whether it's Gold Star Cookies, Binani cement or Gujarat tourism, it makes no difference to Amitabh Bachchan. He just laughs all the way to the bank.
