  • Ryusuke Hamaguchi joins us to discuss his career and his latest films Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy and Drive My Car
Ryusuke Hamaguchi, director of not one but two films in this year's festival - Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy and Drive My Car - joins us to discuss his Silver Bear and Cannes Best Screenplay-winning films.
Whilst studying at Tokyo University of the Arts (where his student films included a remake of Tarkovsky's Solaris), Hamaguchi's graduation film, Passion was screened in competition at Tokyo Filmex. He followed this up with documentary work, including a three-part documentary about tsunami survivors directed alongside Sakai Ko.
In 2015 Hamaguchi released the 5 hour long film Happy Hour about a group of friends in their 30s, which screened at numerous film festivals (including the BFI London Film Festival) and was included on 'top films of the decade' lists from publications including the AV Club and Indiewire.
In the last few years, two of Hamaguchi's films have been selected to compete for the Palme d'Or at Cannes - firstly his 2018 film Asako I & II, followed by this year's Drive My Car which won Best Screenplay. Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy also debuted this year at Berlin Film Festival, where it was awarded the Silver Bear Grand Jury Prize.
