The way I see it, finished products for the masses like Tootsie Rolls are engineered to have everything your taste buds want and nothing they don't. Since distillation is inherently a reductive process, the distilled product will have less than that, and therefore lacking something you might want to taste. I think the most worthwhile things to distill have things you don't want in them, e.g. the things you cut out of a molasses wash during distillation. Just my 2 cents. Thanks for the video Jesse!

Vodka's really good for just dissolving things into. Maybe run it through a strainer if it's too gummy afterwards. I'm really surprised by the clarity on that distillation though, those tootsie rolls were thoroughly melted into that vodka in the still. That little tank is doing some heavy lifting!

I agree, and I wonder if putting vodka in a blender, with other ingredients would help the process along.
IMO, distillation is taking the wrong way around, for almost all of his ideas. He should include a vodka dissolve, for everything, to compare to the distilled results.

Sherbies or redskins or chickos (or cheekies or whatever they're called now)? Or some Werther's Butterscotch or toffees? Those Joystixx taffees you can get from ALDI would be good for a laugh, because you get 5-6 flavours in each pack (cola, orange, strawberry, etc). And can you have too much flavoured vodka?

you have inspired me to still more. in my state (oregon) its illegal to still spirits but i love doing it so much. i wanted to share a storie. cops were going home to home asking about a crime in the area and the cop at my door asked me what the smell was and without thinking i let him come in he asked to use the bathroom. well he went straight to the kitchen and found my airstill and asked me whats up. i didnt want to lie so i told him i was just making some vodka (even though it was definitly 200 proof run) and he just scratched his chin and gave me a smile. well turns out he was learning about stilling himself and we both had a laugh i showed him your youtube and he was grinning about some of your meme still episodes lol.
needless to say we keep in touch now and have you to thank! at the time i was doing the kool aid run.

I have a spirit distillation experiment I'm going to suggest. I just came up with this, but I'm gonna be posting this to a few of your videos from now on, just in the hopes that you'll see it.
In-short, it is a VERY different way to create a (hopefully!) tasty distilled beverage. Where you separate a wash into two halves (via distillation) then treat them differently, and recombine the results later.
In more detail, you would first create your mash or wash like normal, and separate out the low-wines like normal, making cuts for four-shots etc.
The difference ghough, is that you SAVE the leavings from the original still run. This liquid should have nearly no alcohol, lots of water, and normally would just be garbage, right?
Well that liquid MAY contain a lot of compounds that can be really tasty! So what if, instead of just throwing it away, you instead filter, and concentrate it? You would use other methods to remove the water, like freeze-distillation (safe because there is no four-shots methanol left) boiling it down to reduce volume, or even using A3 molecular sieves if you wanna get fancy. Obviously filtered (charcoal?) To remove unwanted particles and bad flavour.
The low-wines are distilled again and any flavour-cuts needed are made appropriately. But you DON'T water it down to age.
Instead, you add the concentrate that you made from the original wash, so all the good flavour-compounds in the original wash are re-introduced. This brings the alcohol % back down to a reasonable level for aging, etc.
Thus you should have something that is thoroughly different from almost any distilled beverage on the planet, and could be really interesting!.

tootsie rolls... the flavour, maybe you remember molasses kisses, similar, but like, a caramel with a strong flavour of old fashioned molasses, they kinda parch the throat, but are delicious if you limit it to a few pieces. being just molasses caramel, there's probably milk in em, but i've never looked into it, can't brew into anything that will taste good distilled.

Considering all the weird experiments you have done, have you never had an air still puke before? I do a regular non alcoholic *ahem* run every few weeks and have had the lid literally blow off and a tsunami of hot "water" across my kitchen with the most banal dry liquids.

Good luck ever cleaning that taste out of the condenser!
BTW, I use an (800W? 1,000W?) Vevor air still made for distilling water with an SCR power controller for distilling small test batches. Quicker heat-up and can be turned way down for careful cuts. Had to rewire a bit to get around the controller, but would be plug-n-play with a regular air still that only has an on-off switch. Just plug in a separate power cord on the fan section so that it runs full speed.

The original recipe they use for tootsie rolls they use calls for the leftovers to be incorporated into the next batch. That means there is a very small amount of 100+ year old candy in ever tootsie roll today

I have one please! Me and some others I know and like to watch your videos have the problem that you often talk mall very fast and that in combination with a light dialect. Then it is very difficult to understand everything if you are not an English native speaker! It would be nice if you didn't start talking much faster in between

As an American, I can honestly say some of our most famous candies are the most horrible. Tootsie rolls, Twizzlers, Dots, JuJuBees, Hershey bars... all horrible, horrible candies. You'd be forgiven for thinking our taste buds were broken lol

Basically ZERO EFFORT REQUIRED, tastes way better, and not illegal for people to do, in countries that prohibit distillation.

Thats where you are wrong. Playful experimentation is one of the best ways to learn anything. Here it is applied in a "actual recipe":

It's crazy to me as an American that I supposedly live in the land of the free, but distilling which is legal pretty much every where else is illegal here. Sure we can have guns but not make our own liquor.
