- I've been asked a few times by those of you watching what I think about "comedy bands". Bands that are by definition designed to be a comedy act. My favourite, of course, is Spinal Tap. They are without a doubt an incredible band, even though it's all an act. Let me explain why.
If you are against comedy and music coming together...well...I have a message for you.

Nigel's guitar is still sustaining to this day.
Don't even talk about it..just ..listen.
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh
And many bites to eat were had.
shhh, don't even talk about it, never mind touching it !
Don't even look at it.
My friends named their cat Derek Smalls. He lived into his 20's and was an absolute legend.
I thought they only go to eleven?

Spinal Tap is spectacular. They wrote and played their own instruments and the comedy is spot on for anyone who’s played in or been about of band and further more; If you don’t enjoy Tap, you’re simply put, a miserable person…
They even played tours and festivals.
@@ectoplasma5 They have played Knebworth at least once.
Also they are not just the 1984 movie. They released a great album in 1992, Break like the Wind. I can't even begin to imagine the shitstorm the song "Bitch School" would cause on social media if released today. What's wrong with being sexy?
My only regret is that we never had the chance of hearing a finished "Lick my love pump" 😢
".....it's in D minor. The saddest of all the keys."
@@kevinoconnor2921 yes indeed... that's what you do when you are a "Mach"
Greatest unfinished song ever.
the beautiful mach piece lost to time
T'was part of a trilogy, I believe....
I read a Jeff Beck interview in one of the guitar mags years ago where the topic of Spinal Tap came up. They asked him for a favorite scene, to which he replied, "every bloody minute of it!". He also noted the scene where Nigel was sitting in a waiting area (airport?) and that the "bastards" even had him reading a car magazine.
There's always such great production quality in JH's videos
They must be recorded in Dobbly
you mean dolby ? hahaha
Cheers to Justin Hawkins giving naughty lyrics the thoughtful and dramatic readings they so richly deserve
"Stephan Tyler would kill for these lyrics." Is a great example of the brilliant throw away line in action.
Tyler was actually one of those who was OFFENDED by the movie back when it came out as he felt that it was making fun of bands like Aerosmith. No surprise as it's quite easy to see that Tyler takes himself wayyy too seriously.
@@nigeldaddyo wasnt he one of the biggest sex crazed coke fiends back then? :D
@@nigeldaddyo I never even thought of Tyler or Aerosmith when I saw this.
@@nigeldaddyo Joe Perry on the other hand found it absolutely hilarious! He felt called out by 'Big Bottom' due to 'Back in the Saddle' being played only on bass, as well as the rockstar antics he considered realistic to his experience in Aerosmith. The girlfriend-conflict also hit close to home apparently...
@@TempoDrift1480 Most people think of 80s Aerosmith, but a huge part of their career took place in the 70s. They had sexual lyrics similar to Spinal Tap a lot of the time actually in both periods.
Additionally, the whole 'band falling apart due to girlfriend issues' and 'losing popularity rapidly' situations were experienced by Aerosmith.
Joe Perry left the band after his toxic wife spilled milk, yes she literally spilled milk, on the other guitarists wife. After he left Aerosmith they weren't even able to fill small home shows in Boston venues. Steven Tyler was living off 10$ a day handed out my management trying to regulate his drug use while Perry descended into drugs fully, was dumped by his wife after he lost all his money, & had to sell his prized Les paul (which Slash bought btw and then gifted back many years later) just to eat.
They reunited thanks to Joe's new girlfriend Billy (who also got him clean) getting him to contact Tyler again which revitalized their careers completely in combination with bringing in new songwriting partners.
Pretty Spinal Tap, that :D
My band Shark Sandwich is celebrating its 32nd anniversary next month. The true genius of Spinal Tap is it's unerringly accurate portrayal of the misadventures of any band that has almost toured at any level. I lose count of the number of scenes that I have personally experienced during my long ago days touring in a rock and roll band. What is even more amazing is the scenes are as a general rule all improvised. Anything these guys do is worth watching. Bravo Justin for making a video on Spinal Tap.
Awesome, but why not "Shit Sandwich"?
Just a two word review: Shit Sandwich
Where did they print that? That’s not real, is it? 😂

True story: Growing up, I thought "Gimme Some Money" was an actual 1960's song. It took 14 years to discover the brilliant truth.
Great tune
@@torspomedia5861 hahahah, that was so well done, it probably had a lot of people thinking the same.
There is a 60s soul song called "First I Look At The Purse" by The Contours, which was later covered by J. Geils Band in the 70s. I'd be amazed if GSM was not inspired by it.
Give some love to Rob Reiner for co-writing, directing, and acting in this masterpiece!
Meat heads best film
@@mikemartin5073 Sadly, I had to downvote that, because Stand By Me and The Princess Bride exist. I'm cruel and unfair. Meathead will understand. He made those films one right after the other like a god among men. Oops forgot about the Sure Thing, but it's pretty funny and sweet...
@@FreeCatCheese lol I had a Sure thing poster in my bedroom when I was 12 and had completely forgotten about the film. Thank you for the ride in my time machine
Technically, all of the dialogue was improvised, and the actors were only given a description of the scene they were in. We need to get from point A to point B, and Action!
Everyone Is brilliant in the film
We played Spinal Tap's "Sex Farm" at a local brewery gig (way too loud, as well), and the audience JUST DIDN'T GET IT~!!!!! It was epic. Talk about a crowd-killer!
Shame on them!!
That's hilarious. The more I think about it, the funnier it gets...
@@robnewnham2449 there was NO crowd participation for the chorus!!!!!
I would have bought you a round for playing that. We have experienced the same response with many of the songs on our set lists. Most people who want to hear Free Bird and Mustang Sally stand there slack jawed, but there is that ONE dude in the back yelling "FUCK YAHHHH! GREAT SONG! GREAT SONG!" Those are the people we play for.
I played Big Bottom acoustic at an open mic night in the middle of nowhere and it was equally well received...
Spinal Tap actually really influenced me growing up, the first song I ever performed was Tonight I'm Gonna Rock You Tonight. So glad my parents introduced me to such amazing art, from movies to music.
That's their best song imo; even the riff is funny
We are Spinal Tap of the UK! You must be the USA!!!
This Is Spinal Tap is my favourite movie of all time. Was lucky enough to see them play live at The Royal Albert Hall around 1990 ish when they promoted the album Break Like The Wind. A totally amazing and brilliant night. Musically original and completely hilarious and the observations of real bands are spot on. Tap Rules!!!! PS Loving the Hasselhoff T shirt Justin
I was in college when This Is Spinal Tap came out. My friends and I watched it on VHS more times than I could count. Then again, we were all musicians and it hit home.
True confession: I live for Justin's theme song. ❤🤣🎵
You could play it in a loop and live forever
same here.
I was fortunate enough to see them live twice. Brilliant. Both times at The Warfield in San Francisco. My cheeks hurt from laughing and smiling so much.
I can't say enough about how perfect this youtube channel is! and it's all because of you Justin, from your smile to your wit and wisdom, to your sense of style and your music industry expertise, thanks for brightening up my day.
'...how could I leave this behind?' is worthy of a Ron Mael lyric resolution.
The best! "These go to eleven" is my favorite scene. Congrats on hitting 275K subscribers Justin & MMP! 🎊🎉
Hello Justin, Jeff Beck has said in several interviews that he absolutely loved the Spinal Tap movie. In fact I believe he mentioned that he had met Christopher Guest and asked him if his character was based on him and was disappointed that he replied no. Jeff is a huge fan of the Spinal Tap movie. In fact I'm pretty sure he actually played on "Break Like the Wind" a song on thier second album of the same name.
Christopher Guest is a bit of a wet blanket in real life, sadly.
no he just copped Jeff Beck's hair...
RIP Ric Parnell. Spinal Tap and Atomic Rooster drummer extraordinaire... Son of Jack Parnell.
Wonderful comentary on the best film ever made. These guys are not only great actors and comedians but also talented musicians and songwriters and it all just work. You can enjoy those songs on a purely musical level unironically.
Spinal Tap II is in the works; I hope they don't screw it up. BTW, Jeff Beck claims he loved the movie and that he laughed so hard in the theater the first time he saw it others in the audience told him to be quiet. I still imagine Nigel Tufnel's voice whenever I read a Jeff Beck interview though.
This is one of the best videos you've ever done. Bravo!
Haahaaa! Thank you so much, Justin. This is the most amazing film.
One of my favorite movies, extremely fun and quotable. The best part is how convincing they are, whenever they tackle a sound they do a pretty solid job fitting in with the contemporaries, Ozzy even thought it was a real documentary when he first saw it lol
It wasn’t until some years later and being involved with some punk bands. I was carrying equipment. That I discovered Tap is frighteningly accurate.
Ozzy also thought the actor who portrayed him in “The Osbornes” was brilliant.
Ozzy, to be fair to him was out of his mind for four decades solid. And that is something even the great Spinal Tap couldn’t do 😆
"The review you had on Shark Sandwich, merely two words: Shit Sandwich" "Who wrote that? You can't print that!"
The Electric Banana .... Don't look for it, it's not there anymore...
I knew you was going to say Big Bottom lol. I absolutely love the spinal tap film, there's so much funny stuff in that film would take me ages to go threw. But two highlights for me was the stone henge build that turned out the wrong size, and the bassist getting stuck in that egg thing. What a classic film..
If an artist can't see themselves in this movie and laugh, I probably don't want to hear what they have to say.
On a related note, one of the things I've always loved about Justin & The Darkness is how humor can pervade their music without it ever being a joke or farce. That is true for this channel as well. The kind of giddy goofiness woven into everything from "Growing On Me" to "America" (a fave of mine) to the unhinged moments in the vocal delivery in "Do it in the Dark" just magnifies the impact in a good way. Thank you for making it a point to breathe such life into your work.
Their movies are the best! Geniuses of hilarity. Lines are easily applied in our daily life.
The early days of wireless mics are so relatable...picking up the planes convos.😄 Personal experience there.🤙🏼
You, sir Justin, walk that genius line of pure rock and tongue and cheek. That does not make you or the band a joke. It means you are a good time and happiness is cool and you melt our faces.
Mockumentaries are an art form, all should hail!
Absolutely love the Täp! To the point that pre-lockdown, I was asked to be the Tufnel in a Täp tribute band and I was more than happy to oblige. Shame we never got out of the rehearsal room. One day we may manage to get it back together…
I recall a Jeff Beck interview where he said he fell off the chair laughing when he first saw This is Spinal Tap
So brilliant is Spinal Tap that Marshall has now respectfully made an amp that will go to 11 and even higher. I dare anyone not to laugh themselves silly or find their heart warmed with the irony of this film. Never before has a band checked as many boxes as Spinal Tap except for my favorite band THE DARKNESS.

@@philmckenna5709 that's what I get for not proofreading before hitting send. Thanks for the heads up.
That’s brilliant! Well done, Marshall !
I got to see Spinal Tap in concert and they are excellent musicians. At the show the Stone Hedge monument was so huge they couldn't get it down from the rafters 😂.
This Is Spinal Tap is my all time favourite film.
Often times I watch your videos and other often times I watch Spinal Tap. I often times enjoy them both
I saw it for the first time in a movie theater the year it came out ( I was 20 years old). I confess during the course of the film that I began to wonder if it were real or not. That’s how good it was
I only knew for sure when I saw John Steed as their record label head
I was at that "One night only world tour" where you played, in London and they smashed it. They were even the support act, the Folksmen. When I met Harry Shearer some months later (2010) at Heathrow all I could manage was a babbling "that was a fantastic gig, thank you!". The really strange thing was, I was on my way to New Zealand and while I was there, we drove past a housing development which had a sign that read (and I shit you not) "If you lived here, you'd be home by now", Harry's line from The Return of Spinal Tap.
I have been recently enjoying your channel to help me through a rough patch, the vids are clever and make me laugh. Yesterday I watched a video with you and your brother and it was a REAL Spinal Tap moment. It was a Rig Rundown and Dan was showing his guitars off. He said you had gifted him a guitar named Doon but the interviewer thought he had said June. Chris (the interviewer) asked if it was named June because that's when he received the guitar and after a long pause Dan said it was named after the David Lynch classic film without correcting him. Chris said that's cool and then continued to call the guitar June. Clearly he was unfamiliar with the film. This accidental comedy would have fit nicely in the Rob Reiner classic film called Spinal Tap
Been on kind of a binge of your channel for the past two days (with sleep and food and work in between but ya know). Love it. All of it.
Yes, the innuendo is great in "Big Bottom", but it comes up short in comparison to "Holding My Own" which imho is one of the greatest recorded tracks in rock history.
Cunning linguists might like to check out the song "Pink Soup" by Vodka Collins (or the album of the same name) .. lol
Thank You! Best one so far. By far!!💋🤟

What a shame Derek and David’s musical “Saucy Jack” never got off the drawing board.
“This is Spinal Tap” is so well written, every scene has quotable dialogue. I’m told a sequel is on the way for next year, it will be hard to top the original, hilarious movie.

I LOVED The Kids are Alright, the Who "disaster" film and documentary from the 70s. I watched it 200 times probably. But then I discovered Spinal Tap. And I instantly saw how genius it was, cutting into the 70s documentaries about all my favorite bands, but doing it with love and understanding and humor. And the music was amazing. Spinal Tap forever!
My brother and I wore out our VHS of TKAA way back when. That version of A Quick One is one of my favorite songs ever.
Have you ever seen the Metallica documentary? Is almost the same film but played completely straight
Man, I'm glad you mentioned Mighty Wind! Love that movie.
The guitar scene is legendary, most people don’t know the amount of legends that couldn’t afford to buy it.
Thxs again Justin for riding again from AZ
Don't hassle the Hoff
Michael McKean has always been a brilliant satirical musician. The Lenny and the Squigtones songs from Luverne and Shirley are genius.
Often times I watch your channel, every times I enjoy. Thanks for providing such great interestings and intelligence sightings. You Tubes gold.
Spinal Tap taught me that d minor is the saddest key to play in with the melancholic ballad "Lick My Love Pump"
For years I thought he said
"Big Dave is waiting inside my tights"
David St. Hubbins referencing his pink torpedo yet again
I really preferred their earlier work, like Listen, to what the Flower People Say, and Gimme Some Money. 🥰😍🎶🎸
Thanks Justin - I had the volume turned all the way up to 11 😂
I love Spinal Tap, probably more than some really good "real" bands. I was fortunate enough to see them in the early 90's and Nigel had a guitar with a tachometer that would rev up when he played as well as the Marshall stack guitar. Your analysis is brilliant, thank you for sharing it!
I wish there was an “utterly adore” along w “like”.
Spinal Tap are amazing! Another great rock mockumentary was 'Bad News' which had the guys from 'The Young Ones' in it. It came out around the same time. Very funny!
🎵🎵 Once in every lifetime, comes a life like this, oh i need u, u need me...🎵🎵
Laaa ger...
I had just gotten off a 3 month tour with a band and was living in a motel by myself for a couple of weeks, waiting to go out again. For me, the first night after a tour was always an emotional roller coaster between elation in having a much needed break, to restless loneliness from having the brakes slammed on, to feeling depressed and a bit useless and worn out from all the over indulgences.
I think this was around 1986, and I turned on the crappy TV and Spinal Tap was just starting. I really had no idea what I was watching at first, but it quickly took my mind off of the usual brain stew that happens during those times. What great timing and what a great film. I've watched it many times since. This is the best R&R movie ever made.
And this cast seems to get everything they do right. Best In Show is another classic, nailing the dog show world.
Justin, I just found your channel last week and can't get enough of it. You're taking me away from my work. Excellent!
Best Mockumentary of all time! Never gets old because it's all so spot on, down to the minutiae haha never gets old. I was once in a band with a keyboard player whose missus got up and declared this "immature, boring and pathetic" mid way through watching the movie. She didn't "get it" whatsoever (she assumed it was real) and needless to say their relationship (him on the henpecked end) was over shortly thereafter. An all time classic!
Thanks for this! Humour most definitely belongs in Music and Spinal Tap is the best way to show why. Other notable parodies were the comic strips 'bad news' and more bad news, which still has me in stitches.
I'm a huge Zappa fan too, and he was never afraid to mix serious music and comedy to great effect. 'does humour belong in music' was an album and video release of much of Franks amusing music, and shows how excellent the mix can be....
Yes, Spinal Tap rules all the way. Have you ever seen/heard Flight of the Conchords? Another hilarious brilliant musicianship married to comedy x

Thank You for acknowledging A Mighty Wind! I always saw The Folksmen as the unofficial alternative history of The Thamesmen… It’s what would have happened if Heavy Metal hadn't come along to turn them into Tap 😅👍
One of my favorite Folksmen lyrics is from "Never Did No Wanderin'" because it somehow feels like something Tap would write if they tried to do something folk-inspired - like it's supposed to sound cool and grandiose, and it kinda is, but at the same time it's comedic because it makes no sense when you actually put it all together:
"My mother was the cold north wind
My father was the son...
Of a railroad man from west of hell
Where the trains don't even run".
I still maintain that "Cash On Delivery" from Break Like The Wind is one of their most underrated tunes.
Genius is the only word for Spinal Tap. I see/hear something new each time I see/hear it!
No one could merge Mozart and Bach like they could.

That IS a fun fact! I’ll have to find it online👍
I have their album Back From The Dead. Highly recommended. The soundtrack omits a lot of songs from the film and for whatever reason the versions on the soundtrack aren't as good as the film versions. This is Spinal Tap is the greatest rock and roll movie ever made, I'd say. Wholeheartedly. I think many consider the competition to be A Hard Day's Night and The Last Waltz. Both those are great as they are but This is Spinal Tap wins out because it also happens to be in the top two funniest movies of all time, too. I thought one of Derek's bass necks has eight strings on it. Check the footage!
Great one Justin. My favourite Tap song is "Tonight I'm Gonna Rock You Tonight!". Great riff... and great song.
I wonder how hard they laughed when they were coming up with the lyrics. My friends and I would make up lyrics to songs on the radio and we would have to pull the car over because were in such a state of hysteria.
My brother did that years ago. He would be in the shower and I would be doubled over in the living room laughing. The funniest one to me was Beds are Burning back in the late 80's!
I did this too as a teenager: one lyric that's stayed with me - "all the sheep are bumming me".
Great video Justin. I need to watch the film again.
I'm not a huge primus fan but Les claypool's "electric apricot" is a hilarious take on the jam band scene.

Spinal Tap is glorious! What did you think of their British accents? Not bad for three Americans, right? 😁
Lord Christopher Hayden-Guest is an English Baron. How did he manage that accent!?
Though Christopher Guest is a proper American, he is also British. As Baron Haden-Guest, he actually had a seat in the House of Lords (until he relinquished it)
Especially Michael Keanan...but they are all good.
Michael McKeane's Scottish accent in Good Omens was horrendous though!😀

Hey Hey Bad News!
Loving this channel Justin! Found it a few weeks back. Become a firm favourite ❤
Great video! I have something for COMMENTS DAY 🙃:
I've often wondered what Mariah Carey's 'The Roof' would sound like as a rock song. The lyrics are beautifully written (as is true for many of her songs). The album version of the song even features an instrumental break that would be perfect for a guitar solo, and if you're an MC fan, you know she loves rock music, too. There's nothing more magical to me than when a hip hop or r&b song is performed with a live band. Anyway, give the song a listen if you feel so inclined!
Thank you for the suggestion!
