  • Stainless san mai has been something i've wanted to try for a long, long time, and finally I found the right project. I used 416 stainless, and 80CRV2 for the blade, black g-10 bolsters and spacers, as well as brass spacers and stabilized maple burl handles. These came out great and they have to be some of my best knives yet. These are spoken for, but if you are interested in my work, follow me on Instagram @ljpenn_ or send me an email @ seakranger@gmail.com
    Make sure to subscribe for more videos, and go follow Steve Morley on Instagram @feathercap_forge he helped me get started in bladesmithing, and he let me use his forge press for this project.

    Dude, beautiful work! I have never forged stainless steel before, yet alone san mai stainless. Your tips on this video will really help me out on my first attempt. Good on you for finding a craft that you have an obvious passion for. Young people these days spend to much time on the screens of PC's. I have two sons who do the PC thing. I have forged for 15 years, and I want to pass them down a skill, but they have no interest. To close to the pond I guess to see the beauty. Ps, the g10 bolster with the brass does look sharp! Keep up the great work!

But you do and awsome job explaining your process wich is easy to follow and understand. Simple enough for beginers 🙋‍♂️ but complex enough for the intermediate. Great job man.

    U've done an awesome job on those two beauties!👍🖖

    • @LiamJPenn
      @LiamJPenn  ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s stainless cladding over carbon steel core, with these San mai blades there is often a cool layer where the two alloys blend a little

    Excellent video. Really like those knives. Is there a reason you chose that particular stainless instead of something like Aeb-l? Does that particular stainless forge weld more consistently?

    • @LiamJPenn
      @LiamJPenn  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I used 416 because it did not need to be a hardenable alloy. I would use something like aebl or nitro v if it was going to be on the cutting edge. I am not an expert on forge welding stainless, but It should all weld up fine if you take the time to totally weld up the seams.

    • @TheMotownPhilly
      @TheMotownPhilly 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LiamJPenn right. So I'm guessing it was more of a cost reason? Technically you won't ever be trying to harden the stainless because it would cause too large a grain growth in the high carbon steel since stainless requires a much higher austenite temp. I hear what your saying though, Thanks for responding.

    • @LiamJPenn
      @LiamJPenn  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TheMotownPhilly yes, and the 416 was the right thickness. Hopefully in the future I’ll be doing some straight up stainless blades from nitro v

    Nice! Is the PAPR necessary, or can you get away with an N95 mask and working outdoors? Also curious where that bronze-ish color is coming from....

    • @LiamJPenn
      @LiamJPenn  ปีที่แล้ว

      The full face respirator is the best protection. An n95 outdoors is good, just not as good. The full VersaFlo is great but expensive and a normal respirator is probably just as good protection for your lungs, just less fun to wear

    What’s the brown stuff on the knife edge ?
    The handle is a work of art 👌

    • @LiamJPenn
      @LiamJPenn  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! The brown is just the color of some of the oxides from the coffee etch. There is the mixing zone between the stainless and carbon steel where the two mix a little and that shows up as a different color than the core
