Mutable Instruments Frames Overview and Basics Tutorial

  • This video covers the basics of Frames and demonstrates a handful of uses for the module:
    - 1:4 mult
    - Attenuating mult
    - 4 channel attenuator
    - 4 channel mixer
    - Crossfader
    - Panner
    - Sequencer
    - Envelope
One quick note about the envelope that I forgot to mention in the video, it could actually be trigged by a single gate, given that you have a module to slew a square wave. Then it would act as a sawtooth, playing the envelope sequence forward like I show at the end of the video.

The funny thing is I just bought an Emblematic Catalyst earlier this week. It's basically a eurorack version of the Octatrack scene fader. Then it hit me how Frames was ahead of its time. Catalyst is basically frames between only 2 points 🤯, where you can change the point with the press of a button. Frames is underrated (and probably not well understood), but I think it's capable of a lot more than we've realized. It takes a lot of creativity though to think about how to effectively use it.

Thanks - I wanted to sell it in my early eurorack days. Now I found it in my box with modules I don´t use. I had no usecase but now I have :)

Nothing like reading the manual to make you go "ohh! that's what that does! it shall live for today!"

Thank for the making the video, very informative. I just recently purchased a Frames clone (planks) and am trying to duplicate the cross fading between (2) audio sources you explain around 3:45 in your video. I am not getting the same results and just wanted to inquire if you made any adjustments to your interpolation curves as explained in the manual? Thanks!

I was the second owner of the copy of Frames shown in the video. I dont recall adjusting it, but it could have been set by the owner before me.

I kind of wish it accepted triggers to advance frames, rather than just cv. Or if there was a way to sort of quantize the frames so a ramped lfo would produce rhythmically precise frame changes. Maybe there’s a way and I’m not seeing it.

that is one of the available modes in the Parasite firmware. I highly recomend installing it :) you get basic frames and you can switch to 4 completely different modes, quad sequencer, shift register, quad lfo or euclidean sequencer. Frames is a very underrated module

Doable in standard firmware. Select an existing frame and hit Add 5 times, turn mod attenuator all the way up, send pulses to mod to step through keyframes.
