This song and album was huge in Milwaukee, receiving extensive airplay on the upcoming FM Rock stations in the area, plus the album cover looked great with a black light! They opened for REO Speedwagon at Summerfest in 2014. aaah, memories.....

the amazing Babe Ruth ... Jake ridin' shotgun the whole of his days Headin' for the Mexican border Shotgun movin' to the rhythm of his range Just to help him keep law and order Sits right back just a-takin' it easy Drinks a shot a whisky and it makes him mighty wheezy He coughed hard once He coughed hard twice Neglecting keeping watch Don't mind the sheriff's advice Ridin' Shotgun Runnin' over land To the Rio Grande Now Shots rang down from the rocks up above And bore Jake to his feet His pants fell down and actin' like a clown The bullets had him dancin' to a rock 'n' roll beat Big Jake did the boogaloo too Got lucky, he cried like a drunk His aspirations ain't no ??? for you And that's the way it is Ridin' Shotgun Runnin' over land To the Rio Grande Now Stage gotten in to the centre of town And Jake gotta have himself a drink He got to the bar and what he saw There was something simple station folk would hate to think Ella-May was dancin' to the sound of the blues Her belly must be wobblin' right down to her shoes It's a-groovin' on the sidewalk, just don't get too near 'Cause you're gonna get knocked over by a belly full o' beer Ridin' Shotgun Runnin' over land To the Rio Grande Take the law in hand To the Rio Grande Now
this is one of my favorite songs of the 70s - and I have a ton of them, wow the layers of perfection everything perfect. thank you for posting--will have to borrow the vinyl from my brother - I only do vinyl and we have about a 1000 between the two us and I still have the same system I bought in 1978
who was the dork that voted down one of the 74 BIGGEST hits? Talk about an underground hit, there wasn't a disco in 74 or after that didn't play this song. It Rock! so did our Dancing! We started with 20 ppl, took our routine to "The Pub", then we went on the road send 2 couple to each club in the area. It took about 2 months but we had every one doing "the Fargo".
woke up a couple of daze ago with this tune playing in my head - flashback ? - crazy that I could remember the lyrics and riffs - really great stuff from my bros Mustang 8 track player circa 1973 - and The Mexican - Montreal early '70s was amazing place to be...
They must have been an A&R reps worst nightmare! How do you sell a band that rocks this good and then goes on the play Curtis Mayfield, Frank Zappa and Ennio Morricone? And where does a pint size cutie like that get the lungs to belt out this stuff? What a band! Too eclectic for many but ...really...what a band!
I am graphist, not music historian, but this 1973 cover is something like the 1971 Yes Fragile, a same Universe, mixing Geography with Phisicaly interpretations, In case of Blue-Green maps around Fragile I always think is around Spain, but a Landing on Spain, here is more America see as a Player of Football waiting for the Strike no? the Ball representing Spain too?
just another canuck lovin it!, lose the horn, she rocks first really heavy rock shit, Runaways got all the accolades early on they were just twinkies. we were weened on this shit....polarnorth.
One REALLY BOMBASTIC ALBUM OPENING TRACK! And one of my RAVE-FAVES! Then again, Babe Ruth ONLY made LP's (The 3 of them; I've yet to get the reunion LP "Que Pasa") that had NOTHING but FAVES! And the ROGER DEAN cover is worth the price of admission alone! Thanx fer this, m8..
Mad Hatter Monday’s at Park Avenue in downtown Milwaukee ... college night during the 1980’s.... packed always!

This song, that summer
Those memories

These guys & Budgie grossly under-rated & under-appreciated. Janita Haan ROCKS. ] -)
I was a freshman in High School when this came out...Still get the same rush when I hear it!!!!!!!!!!! AWESOME.
great album! i still have the vynil:)
I got to see em play this in I think in 75 or 76. They opened up for Humble Pie in Dayton Ohio at Hara.
Saw about 20 concerts there in the 70's. I'm from Dayton.
the amazing Babe Ruth ...
Jake ridin' shotgun the whole of his days
Headin' for the Mexican border
Shotgun movin' to the rhythm of his range
Just to help him keep law and order
Sits right back just a-takin' it easy
Drinks a shot a whisky and it makes him mighty wheezy
He coughed hard once
He coughed hard twice
Neglecting keeping watch
Don't mind the sheriff's advice
Ridin'
Shotgun
Runnin' over land
To the Rio Grande
Now
Shots rang down from the rocks up above
And bore Jake to his feet
His pants fell down and actin' like a clown
The bullets had him dancin' to a rock 'n' roll beat
Big Jake did the boogaloo too
Got lucky, he cried like a drunk
His aspirations ain't no ??? for you
And that's the way it is
Ridin'
Shotgun
Runnin' over land
To the Rio Grande
Now
Stage gotten in to the centre of town
And Jake gotta have himself a drink
He got to the bar and what he saw
There was something simple station folk would hate to think
Ella-May was dancin' to the sound of the blues
Her belly must be wobblin' right down to her shoes
It's a-groovin' on the sidewalk, just don't get too near
'Cause you're gonna get knocked over by a belly full o' beer
Ridin'
Shotgun
Runnin' over land
To the Rio Grande
Take the law in hand
To the Rio Grande
Now
That solo.....some of the most raw sounding guitar I have ever heard. Still have my vinyl.

Someone said to me that why the 70's music was so awesome was the drugs. This one is decently drugged. As was Jenny, I suppose!? Kudos.
