Why has everyone also forgotten her alternate reason for becoming Jem? She needed to save her record label in order to save the orphanage she runs, the Starlight House. She continued to be Jem to give Starlight Records an artist to compete with Eric Raymond's band and musical vision, the Misfits, in order to prove who should be the true head of Starlight Music. However, the initial reason was to compete in a Battle of the Bands to win a mansion that was put up as a prize. The mansion was to replace the Starlight House Orphanage that Jerrica and her mother ran which was accidentally destroyed by robbers hired by Eric Raymond to intimidate Jerrica.

They're making Jem "normal". This and the comic are exactly the kind of girly garbage I thought the original cartoon was standing up against, 30 years ago. Now we have some vapid teen flick and a comic about 2 sisters going on dates. Neither Jerricas have any ambition whatsoever other than being "liked".

I CAN ANSWER THE QUESTION AS TO WHY JERRICA HAD TO USE AN ALTERNATE PERSONA. Jerrica was suppose to be running a multi-million dollar corporation. There were board members. Therefore, she had to be taken seriously and if the board found out the Jerrica was Jem...they would not take her seriously. On top of that Jerrica is a woman in a man's role. Jerrica could not be flying all over the world letting all of the big heads of Starlight Records know she is not taking care of business. Eric was constantly trying to take over Starlight Records. He was not able to because of Jerrica. Jem was the top artist at Starlight Records. There was a need for the double persona.

There were episodes where Jerrica just didn't want to deal with the business side of it, and as Synergy said in "Midsummer Night's Madness," "Jem allows you to relax and have fun... Having fun is something that you, my little workaholic, have forgotten how to do... Don't be afraid of Jem, get to know her. Learn from your other identity and you draw new strength."
***** It was never really explained why she initially chose to make Jem. But, if you watch the first episode, when the car that her dad left her comes up, it has "JEM" as the hood ornament. So, seeing that she may have been inspired? Or maybe her father had already programmed the image into Synergy, should Jerrica ever have need of it. Initially, she didn't agree with Eric stacking the competition in The Misfits favor, partly because she just didn't like the idea of the Misfits being represented by her father's company (since they came off as overall crappy people). So, maybe she disguised herself as Jem in order to embody what she believed should be her father's company's legacy. Good, wholesome music, while making it a fair competition. It may also be because of legal technicalities, since the competition likely states that people who work the corporate side of the company can't compete. You know, like those contests different places have, but their workers can't actually enter? I don't think the Misfits were signed with Starlight Records, yet, so they were technically free agents who were using the competition as a publicity boost, and thus "winning" a contract with Starlight Records.
ChaoticButterfly Admittedly, even though an 80s kid, I'm no expert on Jem; I would watch the show by force, due to the girls at home, at least until Saber Rider or Brave Starr came on. But even I remember enough of this show to KNOW for a fact they got this wrong; Synergy was an integral part of the story, as was their rivalry with the Misfits and Eric Raymond. I think you described the reasons for Jerrica being Jem perfectly, but I remember something else, vaguely: Jerrica was really the responsible, head of household, and her priority wasn't just the music company, but running the foster house for the girls. Her reason for getting involved was to secure money for them, I think, but also because she didn't want to "give up" her normal life. So, the Jem persona was created [1] to draw attention away from her, and [2] to keep her dad's ground-breaking, highly advanced holographic technology safe. I can't speak to her inspiration for the character; I'd thought it was Kimberly who was the more musically inclined sister. Best guess is they took a vote, and because Jerrica had always been a "leader" amongst her sisters, they put her to lead. As to the use of synergy, well... for reasons of practicality, I'm guessing, they didn't want to go the fantasy route of making the whole multi-phase, onmi-processing, brain-wave based visual interactive A.I. sentient machine part of the movie because it would stick it too much into the "fantasy", or at least "Highly improbable" genre. Instead, they wanted to make this a more "Character driven" film, so that's what they based the story in. Again, this is supposition from a not-quite-fan, at best, so I may just be wrong. Either way, even if they didn't use the "Jem" tag line, this movie doesn't exactly look like something many people would want to see; forget Hannah Montana [which, believe it or not, actually DID make some money as a movie, though that was more based on the built-in, rabid, tween Girl Fanbase] there is something vaguely Brittany Spears in "Crossroads" about it.
she (Jerrica) needed the secret identity of Jem because that's what her father wanted -- he's the one who created the Jem identity to help Jerrica hold on to her record label (and fight Eric Raymond) after he died. she (Jerrica) also ran a halfway house for girls, and didn't want the rivalry between Jem and Eric (and the Misfits) to affect the orphans.
I don't think that Jerrica and Kimber's father predicted that Eric Raymond would turn on Jerrica and stop funding the Starlight home. He was the one who hired Eric, after all.
Why no Misfits, I need my Stormer! This movie gets everything wrong and I know this from only the trailer! Why is Eric going through rule 63? I really don't get why that was needed! In fact it kind of confuses me. Everything about this confuses me, why is this called Jem and the Holograms when it has nothing to do with Jem and the Holograms?! Maybe the universe will spare us and we find out this was all an elaborate joke Hollywood created to troll us..... I can only hope.

I never watched Jem... but I imagine this movie being like if they made a movie about the Super Mario Bros. in which Mario and Luigi weren't superpowered ex-plumbers who stomped Goombas and traveled by Warp Pipe and shot fireballs at turtles, but a couple of regular guys with little sense of justice who traveled across the entire one city of the Mushroom Kingdom which was surrounded on all sides by endless desert and Bowser was a human in bad makeup and OH, WAIT.
Sexy Little Shrimp Girl I second that! Just recently I have seen the Super Mario Bros. Movie for the first time and of course is bad and has barely any connection to the Mario Bros. games but it is entertaining to see how they came up with all that deal of the dinosaurs wanting to conquer earth and so. But Jem? Not only it deviates of the original material A LOT, it has zero originality with a story that has been told a million times before.

when i was 13 the hub first came out, i check out the channel and i see jem. i was instantly hooked. the music on point, the action as captivating and, the misfits were hilarious. wtf happened? they said they were gonna use fan input. there is no synergy, they white washed shana and, they didn't use the orignal music. i knew the movie biz is all about the $$$ but they're going about it the wrong way. you'd make a lot more money by GIVING THE PEOPLE WHAT THEY WANT

Janet LaCava, it was 1.9 "Adventure in China" (1st self-contained episode of the series after the 5 and 3 episode movies), in which Jem couldn't perform in some concerts in China 'cause she lost them (one of the videos was on this very subject, showing what she'd really lost was the contact with her "the spirit of her mother", as we now know...). Once even Pizzazz (who had followed with Eric Raymond and "the Femme Misfits" into China) had the earrings on and toyed with Jem for 'em not knowing how much it really meant to her, far more than the fact she couldn't play the concerts. Ultimately a little Chinese girl had the earrings on (wish there was a scene where Jacqui Synergy would talk to her giving the kind of care she's famous for) and went to the last concert and gave 'em to Jerrica as "a gift to Jem" (Jerrica stated, while putting back her earrings, that "if those were the real ones I would like to give the concert, so the girl could listen", then JS whispered her (in her sexy voice) "why shouldn't you?". Jerrica just turned and figured THOSE were THE REAL EARRINGS and "shrieked like a little girl", to which she turned to her sisters/bandmates, turned on the hologram and gave the concert, which she dedicated to that little girl that "meant so much to her". Of course, she gave her a copy of the "fake earrings", so it could "seal the friendship" and "give her good luck always"... This is the kind of thing JatH's CREATIVE PEOPLE whipped up all the time and Jon M. Chu & Co. is so CLUELESS about...

Rebecca Luna, OK... There were actually 3 PAIRS OF JEMSTAR EARRINGS INVOLVED. One was thrown in an archeological excavation and was auctioned as a "cultural artifact", the 2nd was found by a businessman who proceeded to make "millions" of copies of them for his business and the 3rd one was thrown in a trash can and was recovered by a sanitation worker who gifted them to his daughter Lin (those were actually the REAL ONES, or like we would say today, "the ones with Bluetooth built-in"...). Jerrica, in her wild chase for "the spirit of her mother" (as many fans now acknowledge it) found the 1st 2 pairs and were given back to her without results, having to cancel concert after concert, being replaced by "you know whom". On the last concert (supposedly in Beijing) Lin went to the Jem concert, on which Jerrica saw how the little girl defended herself nicely against some bullies that tried to steal her pair of Jemstar earrings. After that, Lin gave the earrings to Jerrica, telling her to "give 'em to Jem, they gave me good luck". The rest played just as I've pointed out in my latest post on this very reply thread. PS: I STILL say Jacqui Synergy would find a way to give Lin her gratitude, as she did (holographed as a dragon) at the end of "The Princess and the Singer" ...

Oh and, yes, Pizzazz in the cartoon SHRIEKED EVERY TIME she was called by the name her parents gave her... I just gave an IRL reason why she didn't like her name (neither did Mary Stormer, with the "lamb sheppard jokes", which is understandable...)
Jerrica is supposed to be a woman in her late 20's that secretly becomes her companies biggest star with the help of her holographic projection machine that transforms her & her entire band into super stars with her earrings. That's what it is. They could've tweaked that a little for reality purposes but they made a completely different movie. So annoying. She looked like Avril Lavign Not Jem.

Im a guy and I used to watch this cartoon with my sister and cousin waiting on transformers to come on. I actually liked the Jem cartoon so when I heard about the movie I was like cool thinking it was gonna be a fun trip back to the 80's with some cool special effects. Watched the trailer and like Roth in the video I was dumbfounded too. All I could do was look with my jaw on the floor. They really fd this movie with no vaseline!
You missed a main part of the heart of Jem's story. Synergy was created in the essence of Jerrica and Kimber's mother, Jackie. Their father gave Synergy Jackie's likeness. It was a way of making sure the girls were taken care of after he was gone. Also Starlight House. There was a lot of heart to the original story which is not projected in the film because they took all that out. If Hollywood wants to get it right, they need to redo it the creators of Jem and fans of Jem because we would know how to execute it.
don't forget Jerrica was running a foster home for girls while she ran her father's company. she created a music persona to contend and prevent Eric Raymond from corrupting the company with his shenanigans and music group the Misfits of which was always competing with Jem and the holograms and they always came in second place. Synergy was the ai created by her father that created the persona in the first place.

I was really interested in hearing her opinion until I heard her call Jerrica by "JERICHO". If you can't even pronounce the protagonist's name right, that's embarrassing and someone else should be in this video.
Jerrica used the Jem personality to protect the orphanage and the orphans from Eric, who was always trying to make her lose everything, if I remember correctly.
I feel like the movie could have been so much better if they took it on a different path like maybe Jerica used to love Jem and when everyone forgot about the show she adapted the character and made people realize that Jem is everyone
When I saw the trailer, I was like what the hell did I just watch. This is not Jem at all not only did they take away Synergy and the Misfits, but they took away the fact that Jerrica was running her own company. Though her father left her Starlight Music it still was her company. That to me was the worst of all, because you take away what made the show special. Now I know the how was not perfect, it still was a great show. I will not be seeing this movie.
Just seen a random review of the Movie... Being a lad, I was more into Transformers and Go-Bots rather than Jem, but in the UK at least - I would have to sit through Jem to get to Transformers... More teenage boys have pictures of Halle Berry on their walls than they do stars like Rebecca Black or those of a similar age... Seems the studio forgot what its like to be a teenage lad! 2) Erica... Oh Puhlease!!!! The original Baddie was ERIC... Why change that? 3) Synergie does finally appear... And looks like a kids Meccano project!!! There were exactly TWO people in the entire theater besides me.. and that was opening day.. I won't give much away but I will say that there can NOT be a sequel because they lost money on this video sooo bad. This was the 3rd worst box office #'s in history grossing a little over a million dollars. They spent a measly 5 mill on it and lost 4 mill.. I love it! That's what they get for making such a crappy movie. Meanwhile they spent 125 million on transformers & G.I Joe.. but just because this was supposedly a girly movie they spend 5 mill. Well they lost money on it and I guess they thought it would have such a turn out that there'd be a sequel. Maybe they will but there will need to be MANY upgrades.

The script is dire, the story is awful... Jesus they took ideas from Team America: World Police! You know a movies in trouble when that happens... I did enjoy both Joe Movies but the Budget was a waste... All for effects which did draw people in (I watched on DVD, so they lost out with me! It ended up as being whoever could find the best talent got the company. the guy found the Misfits and Jerrica found Synergy and created Jem and the Holograms.

80's jem has errings that can project holograms. Technology that was too advanced to be used in its age. 2015 an age when holograms can be created seamlessly with cgi but the concept is cut entirely from the movie. Lol.

I agree. I was so excited by the fact that they were making the film then I saw the trailer.... any girl from the 80's will be pissed off. Honestly Jem was every girls answer to Transformers and GI Joe back then. The plot of the cartoons were so rich, that watching them today as an adult I am still entertained by it. Unlike that crock that they posted as a trailer. Another thing that pisses me off as well is that the actresses that they have playing the Jem characters look nothing like the characters that Christy Marx created. They're all watered down versions As for who had the better music it was Jem for Season 1 and 2. But when Season 3 rolled around the Stingers became the best (although their episode screen time count was shorter).
Thank you so much for making this video and represent the fans of the cartoon. There isn't a strong reason why Jerrica uses a fake identity. Sinergy transformed them, and when she saw she was already making succes as Jem. The point is that she sees later that it would be a good idea. In fact it's point to Sinergy again.
I think Mike Pondsmith was spot on when he wanted to protect his license for Cyberpunk. He said and I quote: We have fought to find somebody who was enough of a fan of the world and the game to not want to go change it around or to stick a label of cyberpunk on it and then do something totally different.

Two things: It looks like it has little to nothing to do with Jem and the Holograms the cartoon. Second, this is kinda like the 98 godzilla, in that if they just called it something else, people would prob like it.
Jem in the Jem cartoon, came about for a Battle of the Bands to get Starlight Music out of the hands of Eric Raymond. Then a movie producer offered a movie contract to sweeten the deal......and it just kinda went on from there.
You know, I'm in full agreement that this movie looks like a travesty... but the thing I don't really get is why there's so much fuss about THIS movie in particular. This is hardly the first time one of our favorite childhood cartoons was picked up and completely bastardized in either live action, CGI, or a mixture of them both in an attempt at a "more modern spin" in a movie version...
Because at least the bastardization of those franchises tried to at least appeal to their target audience - poorly (really poorly) and completely misses the point. Right off the hop. Like didn't even try. Transformers? Lots of action, had transformers. Ninja Turtle? Lots of action, had TMNT and follows canon (mostly?). Jem and the Holograms? Hannah Montana meets Justin Bieber.
I did watch JEM as a kid, religiously, but even I am shocked that after Garfield, Transformers, Ninja Turtles, Alvin & the Chipmunks, & the Smurfs have had terribad reboots, THIS is where Americans decided to draw the line. Loved it they made it into today's Jem so our new generation could identify with the movie. Real people don't make holograms but Synergy did so and it fit the movie perfect. I am and will always be a Jem fan they did so good my kids can't wait till they finally meet the Misfits
I was a child of the 80's and I grew up watching Jem and the Holograms and when I saw the trailer I was like this going to stupid I am so glad that I didn't go and see that that crappy movie as JEM fan I would be upset.
Lady gaga should have played Jem and they should have stuck to the original material! That would have been a block buster hit. One other thing is no one mentioned how selfless the original Jem was, She was an almost perfect role model for kids especially girls.

Obviously Jerica doesn't know or have a time to find band so she creates a her own band and she calls it Jem and the Holograms.

Ah, don't forget she was head of starlight girls! The reason she worked so hard was to protect and raise orphan children (and be there for her sister, being the eldest since they lost both their parents themselves) She's a person pushing herself to the max to do what's right.... there were a few episodes where she berated Kimber for being selfish. The idea of Jem, is a strong loving individual who does her best for everyone, untainted by the lure of fame and money, etc.

I cant say I know a lot about JEM, it was way before my time, however I am sort of familiar with some things and I kinda wanna see how this works out, I did notice in the trailer however some things like her looking like she was clicking something on her earring, synergy is in the movie but in the form of a robot that projects things (possibly holograms) she inserts her earring into synergy at one point in the trailer, according to sources close to the film, it seems like they are indeed hiding things a lot, because the actress that plays Kimber said "I think fans need to see the movie to things that they think are missing ARE in their, the producer said that the film is 100% true to the spirit of JEM, I hope it turns out good, some people stated that they have set photos and they show the misfits are indeed in the movie, others say its a prequel, so maybe if it does well enough the sequel will be more like the series

I'm 23 years old and have watched Jem and the Holograms cartoon, and was sooo excited to hear it was going to be made into a live action movie... BUT!! This is totally outrageously BAD!! That movie is totally NOT JEM!!!
Their also missing the starlight girls. The loss of Jerrica and Kimber's Mum which had a huge impact on how Jerrica ran her life how she was so protective of her starlight girls because she knew what not having a parent did to her growing up the guilt loneliness and depression. The fact that the girls looked up to Jem which left her sometimes feeling not good enough. How the girls often got involved with Jem and the misfits fights.
Jerrica not only managed Starlight records, but she also managed the Starlight Foundation. The SF was a group home for girls without families and the proceeds from the Starlight records would go to fund the Starlight foundation. On another note, this "Movie Jem"....I don't like the makeup, with half the face pink. She looks like a burn victim (my apologies to anyone in that situation), but the face paint looks horrible.
This older,original male Jem fan has not seen the movie and has no intention of seeing it. I hope my old friend and fellow Jem follower Rhonda feeles the same way.
How I understood it: Jerrica Benton was owner of Starlight Music thats why she couldn't be the singer of her own music company, Eric Raymond wants Starlight Music he would have argued that "she doesn't have time to work as producer on Starlight," publicly to the pepole/journalists/fans or (if they have one) on the board, as to take over the company, I'm well aware that they didn't mention a board but most big companies have a board (and they didn't always explain fully maybe intentionaly to make it less complicated or like with the Bisexuality/Guy undertones that Ross Campbell the creator of the comic seems to imply that Kimber and Stormer was guy in the tv show! I don't see it being that obvious but as I say it's all relative within the boundaries of already established storylines). Whatever the case I like my explanations better then being shy which is the explanation in the new comic, 'Raya' was the shy one on the team, and what is she now!?

regishel, about the Jerrica issue... This originally was meant as a "vehicle to sell dolls" and their target market was 6-12 y/o girls. What happened is that Christy Marx, Marv Wolfman and the other CREATIVE PEOPLE went on to do an ANIMATED SOAP OPERA that was far more skewered towards teenagers and up, including males. As the original "target market" was so young there were things that were too complicated to understand, like the "directors board" thing (they did one at end of the series with Rory "Riot" Llewelyn anyways). About the Kimber & Stormer issue (this is "one serious can of worms" I'm opening up...) nobody has thought of them as a "same-gender couple" until like 2013, when the first comments not related from fanfiction sites appeared. Finally recently the LGBT community, starting with said creative people begin to embrace the concept (which would make them the FIRST OF ITS KIND by almost a decade) in one of their mayor publications. Do you remember what it happened when this very same issue was put with the star characters of Xena: Warrior Princess (Xena and Gabrielle) in the late '90s and was accepted by the actresses (in the storylines, but not IRL, both still in '15 being hetero) and the creative people? That community embraced the couple and became one of their largest fanbase sources (which might say why that series is not on the air in 2015 in any platform)... If K&S were embraced as a same-sex couple some episodes' TV chip ratings for the cartoon would probably have to be dropped from Y7-FV (today they would get a straight PG rating, IMHO) all the way to 14, which is probably why it will not be officially sold as the concept for the near future, at least... Wonder how this would test Jacqui Synergy's mind on them? It is "the spirit of Kimber's mom", after all... IMHO, she would give an example to all and accept them, even with all the questions going in her marvelous mind...

Its obvious that this female doesn't know anything....if you grew up watching Jem and hated this movie, then you don't remember that cartoon very well. Let me say this: if the director stayed 100% true to the source material, you would have watched that movie and said to yourself, "What the F*** did i just watch" Instead, he made it more relevant today and kept as much of the source material as possible. The songs and performances were on point and very true to the songs prior if not way better. I say good job.And at the end, they did show the misfits featuring Kesha as Pizzazz hinting to a Jem 2.

I thought the dog was cute, but that definitely didn't fit the original show, as a hologram played Synergy's part. Now, I will say, I thought the songs were the best part of the movie, BUT THERE IS NO WAY THEY WERE "way better" that many of the original songs for J&TH cartoon. The only song that was just as good was "youngblood".

Im a guy and I loved the Jem cartoon. I watch all the awesome 80s cartoons and so did you lol Why did they screw this shit up??? Jem and the Holograms is supposed to be adult women, not a bunch of kids. And everything is just wrong. Damn
So I just seen the trailer and I'm completely outraged! I did notice at the end of the trailer she rubs the star earring and says "Are you ready Synergy?" Yet still her age is screwed up! Her Jem hologram is screwed up. Yes Aja and Shana were also orphans taken in by the Benton family as children but what about Starlight House? A huge reason Jerrica was trying to save her company from Eric Raymond was to support those foster girls. Jem was a genius idea because it keeps Jerrica from worrying about conflict of interest and the freedom to run the business without the complications of being this super star, who will be harassed stalked and watched constantly. The Starlight girls are a huge part of the show and drive peace between Jem and the Misfits as well. Then the love triangle between Jem Jerrica and Rio is fantastic to watch at any age. Rio's obvious attraction to Jem, for obvious reasons. Jerrica's guilt. Why oh why did Hollywood do this? My heart aches. This was one of my favorite cartoons. For my birthday one year, all I wanted was Jem and the Holograms. My dad bust his butt to get me the video tapes. Yes, VIDEO TAPE!! I still have them. You can watch the show on Netflix now though. I watch with my daughter now. Im beyond disappointed.

I liked Jem and the band because they were the good guys, but I preferred the look and sound of The Misfits. I am really disappointed that they didn't stay true to the original story! I agree with you that you can't have Jem without Synergy! Xander Harrison gave a perfect answer as to why Jerrica had to use an alternate persona.
Why has everyone also forgotten her alternate reason for becoming Jem? She needed to save her record label in order to save the orphanage she runs, the Starlight House. She continued to be Jem to give Starlight Records an artist to compete with Eric Raymond's band and musical vision, the Misfits, in order to prove who should be the true head of Starlight Music. However, the initial reason was to compete in a Battle of the Bands to win a mansion that was put up as a prize. The mansion was to replace the Starlight House Orphanage that Jerrica and her mother ran which was accidentally destroyed by robbers hired by Eric Raymond to intimidate Jerrica.

I CAN ANSWER THE QUESTION AS TO WHY JERRICA HAD TO USE AN ALTERNATE PERSONA. Jerrica was suppose to be running a multi-million dollar corporation. There were board members. Therefore, she had to be taken seriously and if the board found out the Jerrica was Jem...they would not take her seriously. On top of that Jerrica is a woman in a man's role. Jerrica could not be flying all over the world letting all of the big heads of Starlight Records know she is not taking care of business. Eric was constantly trying to take over Starlight Records. He was not able to because of Jerrica. Jem was the top artist at Starlight Records. There was a need for the double persona.

***** It was never really explained why she initially chose to make Jem. But, if you watch the first episode, when the car that her dad left her comes up, it has "JEM" as the hood ornament. So, seeing that she may have been inspired? Or maybe her father had already programmed the image into Synergy, should Jerrica ever have need of it.
Initially, she didn't agree with Eric stacking the competition in The Misfits favor, partly because she just didn't like the idea of the Misfits being represented by her father's company (since they came off as overall crappy people). So, maybe she disguised herself as Jem in order to embody what she believed should be her father's company's legacy. Good, wholesome music, while making it a fair competition.
It may also be because of legal technicalities, since the competition likely states that people who work the corporate side of the company can't compete. You know, like those contests different places have, but their workers can't actually enter? I don't think the Misfits were signed with Starlight Records, yet, so they were technically free agents who were using the competition as a publicity boost, and thus "winning" a contract with Starlight Records.
ChaoticButterfly Admittedly, even though an 80s kid, I'm no expert on Jem; I would watch the show by force, due to the girls at home, at least until Saber Rider or Brave Starr came on. But even I remember enough of this show to KNOW for a fact they got this wrong; Synergy was an integral part of the story, as was their rivalry with the Misfits and Eric Raymond. I think you described the reasons for Jerrica being Jem perfectly, but I remember something else, vaguely: Jerrica was really the responsible, head of household, and her priority wasn't just the music company, but running the foster house for the girls. Her reason for getting involved was to secure money for them, I think, but also because she didn't want to "give up" her normal life. So, the Jem persona was created [1] to draw attention away from her, and [2] to keep her dad's ground-breaking, highly advanced holographic technology safe.
I can't speak to her inspiration for the character; I'd thought it was Kimberly who was the more musically inclined sister. Best guess is they took a vote, and because Jerrica had always been a "leader" amongst her sisters, they put her to lead. As to the use of synergy, well... for reasons of practicality, I'm guessing, they didn't want to go the fantasy route of making the whole multi-phase, onmi-processing, brain-wave based visual interactive A.I. sentient machine part of the movie because it would stick it too much into the "fantasy", or at least "Highly improbable" genre. Instead, they wanted to make this a more "Character driven" film, so that's what they based the story in. Again, this is supposition from a not-quite-fan, at best, so I may just be wrong.
Either way, even if they didn't use the "Jem" tag line, this movie doesn't exactly look like something many people would want to see; forget Hannah Montana [which, believe it or not, actually DID make some money as a movie, though that was more based on the built-in, rabid, tween Girl Fanbase] there is something vaguely Brittany Spears in "Crossroads" about it.
she (Jerrica) needed the secret identity of Jem because that's what her father wanted -- he's the one who created the Jem identity to help Jerrica hold on to her record label (and fight Eric Raymond) after he died. she (Jerrica) also ran a halfway house for girls, and didn't want the rivalry between Jem and Eric (and the Misfits) to affect the orphans.

Why no Misfits, I need my Stormer! This movie gets everything wrong and I know this from only the trailer! Why is Eric going through rule 63? I really don't get why that was needed! In fact it kind of confuses me. Everything about this confuses me, why is this called Jem and the Holograms when it has nothing to do with Jem and the Holograms?! Maybe the universe will spare us and we find out this was all an elaborate joke Hollywood created to troll us..... I can only hope.

I never watched Jem... but I imagine this movie being like if they made a movie about the Super Mario Bros. in which Mario and Luigi weren't superpowered ex-plumbers who stomped Goombas and traveled by Warp Pipe and shot fireballs at turtles, but a couple of regular guys with little sense of justice who traveled across the entire one city of the Mushroom Kingdom which was surrounded on all sides by endless desert and Bowser was a human in bad makeup and OH, WAIT.
Except that movie would have unintentional entertainment value and would at least be original.

Sexy Little Shrimp Girl I second that! Just recently I have seen the Super Mario Bros. Movie for the first time and of course is bad and has barely any connection to the Mario Bros. games but it is entertaining to see how they came up with all that deal of the dinosaurs wanting to conquer earth and so.
But Jem? Not only it deviates of the original material A LOT, it has zero originality with a story that has been told a million times before.
I always thought of Jerica/Jem as kind of our girly version of Bruce Wayne/Batman, Kent Clark/Superman. Etc! If I was trying to explain Jem to a dude that's how I would have put it. She was our pink, sparkly, big haired 80's female super hero! Lol. I'm soooo disappointed in this remake.

when i was 13 the hub first came out, i check out the channel and i see jem. i was instantly hooked. the music on point, the action as captivating and, the misfits were hilarious. wtf happened? they said they were gonna use fan input. there is no synergy, they white washed shana and, they didn't use the orignal music. i knew the movie biz is all about the $$$ but they're going about it the wrong way. you'd make a lot more money by GIVING THE PEOPLE WHAT THEY WANT

There was actually an epiosde where she LOST the ear rings...just FYI :P made for a great episode :P
Janet LaCava, it was 1.9 "Adventure in China" (1st self-contained episode of the series after the 5 and 3 episode movies), in which Jem couldn't perform in some concerts in China 'cause she lost them (one of the videos was on this very subject, showing what she'd really lost was the contact with her "the spirit of her mother", as we now know...). Once even Pizzazz (who had followed with Eric Raymond and "the Femme Misfits" into China) had the earrings on and toyed with Jem for 'em not knowing how much it really meant to her, far more than the fact she couldn't play the concerts.
Ultimately a little Chinese girl had the earrings on (wish there was a scene where Jacqui Synergy would talk to her giving the kind of care she's famous for) and went to the last concert and gave 'em to Jerrica as "a gift to Jem" (Jerrica stated, while putting back her earrings, that "if those were the real ones I would like to give the concert, so the girl could listen", then JS whispered her (in her sexy voice) "why shouldn't you?". Jerrica just turned and figured THOSE were THE REAL EARRINGS and "shrieked like a little girl", to which she turned to her sisters/bandmates, turned on the hologram and gave the concert, which she dedicated to that little girl that "meant so much to her". Of course, she gave her a copy of the "fake earrings", so it could "seal the friendship" and "give her good luck always"...
This is the kind of thing JatH's CREATIVE PEOPLE whipped up all the time and Jon M. Chu & Co. is so CLUELESS about...

Rebecca Luna, OK... There were actually 3 PAIRS OF JEMSTAR EARRINGS INVOLVED.
One was thrown in an archeological excavation and was auctioned as a "cultural artifact", the 2nd was found by a businessman who proceeded to make "millions" of copies of them for his business and the 3rd one was thrown in a trash can and was recovered by a sanitation worker who gifted them to his daughter Lin (those were actually the REAL ONES, or like we would say today, "the ones with Bluetooth built-in"...).
Jerrica, in her wild chase for "the spirit of her mother" (as many fans now acknowledge it) found the 1st 2 pairs and were given back to her without results, having to cancel concert after concert, being replaced by "you know whom". On the last concert (supposedly in Beijing) Lin went to the Jem concert, on which Jerrica saw how the little girl defended herself nicely against some bullies that tried to steal her pair of Jemstar earrings. After that, Lin gave the earrings to Jerrica, telling her to "give 'em to Jem, they gave me good luck".
The rest played just as I've pointed out in my latest post on this very reply thread.
PS: I STILL say Jacqui Synergy would find a way to give Lin her gratitude, as she did (holographed as a dragon) at the end of "The Princess and the Singer" ...

Jerrica is supposed to be a woman in her late 20's that secretly becomes her companies biggest star with the help of her holographic projection machine that transforms her & her entire band into super stars with her earrings. That's what it is. They could've tweaked that a little for reality purposes but they made a completely different movie. So annoying. She looked like Avril Lavign Not Jem.
She's right, there is no Jem without synergy. So much wasted potential, especially with today's advancements with special effects.

Im a guy and I used to watch this cartoon with my sister and cousin waiting on transformers to come on. I actually liked the Jem cartoon so when I heard about the movie I was like cool thinking it was gonna be a fun trip back to the 80's with some cool special effects. Watched the trailer and like Roth in the video I was dumbfounded too. All I could do was look with my jaw on the floor. They really fd this movie with no vaseline!

You missed a main part of the heart of Jem's story. Synergy was created in the essence of Jerrica and Kimber's mother, Jackie. Their father gave Synergy Jackie's likeness. It was a way of making sure the girls were taken care of after he was gone. Also Starlight House. There was a lot of heart to the original story which is not projected in the film because they took all that out. If Hollywood wants to get it right, they need to redo it the creators of Jem and fans of Jem because we would know how to execute it.

When I saw the trailer, I was like what the hell did I just watch. This is not Jem at all not only did they take away Synergy and the Misfits, but they took away the fact that Jerrica was running her own company. Though her father left her Starlight Music it still was her company. That to me was the worst of all, because you take away what made the show special. Now I know the how was not perfect, it still was a great show. I will not be seeing this movie.

Just seen a random review of the Movie... Being a lad, I was more into Transformers and Go-Bots rather than Jem, but in the UK at least - I would have to sit through Jem to get to Transformers... So I ended up watching it - And for a Girls Cartoon, it was kinda cool if a bit silly (Says the Guy who watched a Giant Robot turn into a Walkman!!!)
Going to say this though - I so agree with the Video about the Movie Trailer and I am going to lay in with a few critiques myself...
1) Whats with The Teen Band??? So bloody TH-cam Demographic that its BORING! Let alone you lose much of your core audience - Teenage Boys who fantasise over OLDER female stars!!! More teenage boys have pictures of Halle Berry on their walls than they do stars like Rebecca Black or those of a similar age... Seems the studio forgot what its like to be a teenage lad!
2) Erica... Oh Puhlease!!!! The original Baddie was ERIC... Why change that?
3) Synergie does finally appear... And looks like a kids Meccano project!!! What???
4) No Misfits - At least not until the inevitable Sequel which will star Ke$ha as one of the Misfits! (Spoilers!!! Watch the film to the end credits!)
5) Hasbro needs to either STOP making Movies of its products or at least give it to someone who knows the source material and isn't going to try and change things to fit the "TH-cam" Generation... I won't give much away but I will say that there can NOT be a sequel because they lost money on this video sooo bad. This was the 3rd worst box office #'s in history grossing a little over a million dollars. They spent a measly 5 mill on it and lost 4 mill.. I love it! That's what they get for making such a crappy movie. Meanwhile they spent 125 million on transformers & G.I Joe.. but just because this was supposedly a girly movie they spend 5 mill. Well they lost money on it and I guess they thought it would have such a turn out that there'd be a sequel. Maybe they will but there will need to be MANY upgrades.

I agree. I was so excited by the fact that they were making the film then I saw the trailer.... any girl from the 80's will be pissed off. Honestly Jem was every girls answer to Transformers and GI Joe back then. The plot of the cartoons were so rich, that watching them today as an adult I am still entertained by it. Unlike that crock that they posted as a trailer. Another thing that pisses me off as well is that the actresses that they have playing the Jem characters look nothing like the characters that Christy Marx created. They're all watered down versions As for who had the better music it was Jem for Season 1 and 2. But when Season 3 rolled around the Stingers became the best (although their episode screen time count was shorter).

There isn't a strong reason why Jerrica uses a fake identity. Sinergy transformed them, and when she saw she was already making succes as Jem. The point is that she sees later that it would be a good idea. In fact it's point to Sinergy again.

I think Mike Pondsmith was spot on when he wanted to protect his license for Cyberpunk. He said and I quote: We have fought to find somebody who was enough of a fan of the world and the game to not want to go change it around or to stick a label of cyberpunk on it and then do something totally different.
They should've gotten a better person to explain what Jem is. The best thing about Jem that she would've went on a tangent about is the fuckery that The Misfits and Eric cause.
To answer his question on why Jerrica had a secret identity: let us remember that she also had the Starlight foundation home for the orphans, she became Jem to not only save her dad's company but the orphanage.
Two things: It looks like it has little to nothing to do with Jem and the Holograms the cartoon. Second, this is kinda like the 98 godzilla, in that if they just called it something else, people would prob like it.
Jem in the Jem cartoon, came about for a Battle of the Bands to get Starlight Music out of the hands of Eric Raymond. Then a movie producer offered a movie contract to sweeten the deal......and it just kinda went on from there.
You know, I'm in full agreement that this movie looks like a travesty... but the thing I don't really get is why there's so much fuss about THIS movie in particular. This is hardly the first time one of our favorite childhood cartoons was picked up and completely bastardized in either live action, CGI, or a mixture of them both in an attempt at a "more modern spin" in a movie version...
Because at least the bastardization of those franchises tried to at least appeal to their target audience - poorly (really poorly) and completely misses the point. Right off the hop. Like didn't even try.
Transformers? Lots of action, had transformers. Ninja Turtle? Lots of action, had TMNT and follows canon (mostly?). Jem and the Holograms? Hannah Montana meets Justin Bieber.

Loved it they made it into today's Jem so our new generation could identify with the movie. Real people don't make holograms but Synergy did so and it fit the movie perfect. I am and will always be a Jem fan they did so good my kids can't wait till they finally meet the Misfits

Ah, don't forget she was head of starlight girls! The reason she worked so hard was to protect and raise orphan children (and be there for her sister, being the eldest since they lost both their parents themselves) She's a person pushing herself to the max to do what's right.... there were a few episodes where she berated Kimber for being selfish. The idea of Jem, is a strong loving individual who does her best for everyone, untainted by the lure of fame and money, etc.

I cant say I know a lot about JEM, it was way before my time, however I am sort of familiar with some things and I kinda wanna see how this works out, I did notice in the trailer however some things like her looking like she was clicking something on her earring, synergy is in the movie but in the form of a robot that projects things (possibly holograms) she inserts her earring into synergy at one point in the trailer, according to sources close to the film, it seems like they are indeed hiding things a lot, because the actress that plays Kimber said "I think fans need to see the movie to things that they think are missing ARE in their, the producer said that the film is 100% true to the spirit of JEM, I hope it turns out good, some people stated that they have set photos and they show the misfits are indeed in the movie, others say its a prequel, so maybe if it does well enough the sequel will be more like the series

Their also missing the starlight girls. The loss of Jerrica and Kimber's Mum which had a huge impact on how Jerrica ran her life how she was so protective of her starlight girls because she knew what not having a parent did to her growing up the guilt loneliness and depression. The fact that the girls looked up to Jem which left her sometimes feeling not good enough. How the girls often got involved with Jem and the misfits fights.
Jerrica not only managed Starlight records, but she also managed the Starlight Foundation. The SF was a group home for girls without families and the proceeds from the Starlight records would go to fund the Starlight foundation. On another note, this "Movie Jem"....I don't like the makeup, with half the face pink. She looks like a burn victim (my apologies to anyone in that situation), but the face paint looks horrible.
This older,original male Jem fan has not seen the movie and has no intention of seeing it. I hope my old friend and fellow Jem follower Rhonda feeles the same way.

regishel, about the Jerrica issue... This originally was meant as a "vehicle to sell dolls" and their target market was 6-12 y/o girls. What happened is that Christy Marx, Marv Wolfman and the other CREATIVE PEOPLE went on to do an ANIMATED SOAP OPERA that was far more skewered towards teenagers and up, including males. As the original "target market" was so young there were things that were too complicated to understand, like the "directors board" thing (they did one at end of the series with Rory "Riot" Llewelyn anyways).
About the Kimber & Stormer issue (this is "one serious can of worms" I'm opening up...) nobody has thought of them as a "same-gender couple" until like 2013, when the first comments not related from fanfiction sites appeared. Finally recently the LGBT community, starting with said creative people begin to embrace the concept (which would make them the FIRST OF ITS KIND by almost a decade) in one of their mayor publications.
Do you remember what it happened when this very same issue was put with the star characters of Xena: Warrior Princess (Xena and Gabrielle) in the late '90s and was accepted by the actresses (in the storylines, but not IRL, both still in '15 being hetero) and the creative people? That community embraced the couple and became one of their largest fanbase sources (which might say why that series is not on the air in 2015 in any platform)...
If K&S were embraced as a same-sex couple some episodes' TV chip ratings for the cartoon would probably have to be dropped from Y7-FV (today they would get a straight PG rating, IMHO) all the way to 14, which is probably why it will not be officially sold as the concept for the near future, at least...
Wonder how this would test Jacqui Synergy's mind on them? It is "the spirit of Kimber's mom", after all... IMHO, she would give an example to all and accept them, even with all the questions going in her marvelous mind...

Let me say this: if the director stayed 100% true to the source material, you would have watched that movie and said to yourself, "What the F*** did i just watch"

The only song that was just as good was "youngblood".

So I just seen the trailer and I'm completely outraged! I did notice at the end of the trailer she rubs the star earring and says "Are you ready Synergy?" Yet still her age is screwed up! Her Jem hologram is screwed up. Yes Aja and Shana were also orphans taken in by the Benton family as children but what about Starlight House? A huge reason Jerrica was trying to save her company from Eric Raymond was to support those foster girls. Jem was a genius idea because it keeps Jerrica from worrying about conflict of interest and the freedom to run the business without the complications of being this super star, who will be harassed stalked and watched constantly. The Starlight girls are a huge part of the show and drive peace between Jem and the Misfits as well. Then the love triangle between Jem Jerrica and Rio is fantastic to watch at any age. Rio's obvious attraction to Jem, for obvious reasons. Jerrica's guilt. Why oh why did Hollywood do this? My heart aches. This was one of my favorite cartoons. For my birthday one year, all I wanted was Jem and the Holograms. My dad bust his butt to get me the video tapes. Yes, VIDEO TAPE!! I still have them. You can watch the show on Netflix now though.
