Making a 3D Printed Lathe Chuck

    I printed the same one in ABS solid. It's surprisingly robust. I did not have balls to actually mount it to a lathe. Great idea on the backplate. Well done!

    Good work and good debugging. Here's a different idea. Once you've printed the chuck, then it's time to make the back mounting. Assemble the chuck. Put a rod in the center of the chuck jaws and hold the other end of that rod in your lathe. Now when you spin the lathe, the chuck will spin perfectly and the back can be cut flat and threaded to match the spindle. Of course, this assumes you have SOME way to hold a rod in the lathe before the chuck is finished.

      Thats a very interesting idea I think I could use another chuck to hold a rod (in the headstock) in and then have the 3d printed chuck connected to that chuck then I would have a tap (in the tailstock) to cut threads in it. Thank you!

      I don't. I used tinkercad to make my own design. It's very easy to design. Just make sure you have the correct measurements for the lathe faceplate indent in the "mod plate".

    Did you ever more thoroughly test this on your lathe? Ive got one printed up in PLA, Im curious if it can be safely used at the lowest RPM on my wood lathe (750 RPM).

      So far it has been pretty safe. Just make sure all the plastic parts are screwed on to the faceplate correctly.

      I have my lathe set at 1600rpm

      The problem is not so much apparent solidity but the fact that the rotational forces and the vibrations caused by the machined part held by the chuck will eventually cause deformation of the PLA and delamination.
      When a crack will appear (possibly internally and thus invisible) in the chuck PLA you risk catastrophic failure and desintegration of the chuck which will splinter at super high speed. Not to mention that the piece being machined will likely also be sent flying at high speed.
      There is a reason metal working lathe are made of metal. Be extremely careful.
      I would personally use the lathe only at low RPMs.

      @@nekononiaow Just wanted to concur with this. Maybe a different filament would be better, like ABS or Nylon? PLA seems very risky given how brittle it is. I love the idea of being able to print machine parts like this. It needs to be safe though.

    Nice work but I would be careful with putting pla on a lathe. PLA parts would not be able to hand this kind of vibration and rotation.

    The grip on the jaws is pretty bad, might want to shave a bit off them with a spider.

      Für eine Drehbank ist das nichts, aber für ne Drechselbank funktioniert es ohne probleme. Warum was neues kaufen wenn man die möglichkeit hat es selber zu machen? Noch dazu ist das keine spielerei. 3D Druck ist extrem wichtig und nützlich heutzutage.
