How does the new 2020 Lexus GX 460 Luxury compare to my 2012 GX 460 Premium with 150,000 miles? I paid $25k for my GX two years ago (May 2018). At the time of filming it's probably worth about $19k, nearly a quarter of what this fully loaded 2020 GX 460 Luxury costs. Let's find out how they both drive.

We own a 2015 GX460 we purchased new. The car has 91,000 miles on it and all we have had fixed were the brakes at 72,000 miles. Still has original battery and rides quiet as a mouse at 70MPH. We're going to keep it until the wheels fall off. This is the best car we have ever owned and we're in our 70's.

Just bought a 2012 GX premium and took it on a 500 mile roadtrip. Super impressed and very glad I made the purchase. It was super composed on the highway, smooth, good power train. As you noted @thetopher the Marc Levinson sound system shines. Another thing, the native Bluetooth connection while talking on the phone was crystal clear, which I didn't honestly expect. I can see why they haven't made any major updates in 8-9 years. The 2012 GX premium is perfect in so many ways.

I had its little brother the 2004 Lexus RX330. The 2nd generation Lexus RX is considered a compact crossover by today's standards. Doesn't sound as good as V8 but, still has a nice sound. Though it has a basic AM/FM, CD Cassette alphanumeric LCD infotainment system, the 215-watt stock pioneer sound system held up amazingly well and still sounds good. The MPG is really good for being a V6 SUV and I average 20.5 city and 26 Hwy If I do get another Lexus, I would get an ES350 F sport with a Mark Levinson sound system since I prefer sedans over SUVs.

      Yeah, I know.
But, I've read that Toyota/Lexus asks their engineering department to design things such as cup holders to hold up to 10-15 years. With that been said, I can see why they're always behind because of the time they take to develop and test something that will last that long.
They don't care much about fuel economy but reliability is their goal. I see them as the CAT of gasoline vehicles. Definitely well worth it investment.
Nowadays, almost every automaker designs vehicles to last a few years and then, makes more money on the repairs.
I own a 2010 LX570 and I'm a mechanic that worked on Toyota and I just love my vehicle (I wish I could have gotten the 2014 or so facelift ). I cannot any happier with my purchase.

But it doesn't hurt to just add Apple carplay or Android Auto, at least keep up the basic modern technology.
We all know why Lexus didn't redesign the interior. To add Apple carplay or Android Auto, they would have to replace the infotainment screen with a newer higher resolution screen that accommodates the smartphone. And if they had to do that, the whole dash would have to be redesigned. But the main reason why Lexus didn't redesign the 2020 model is because they didn;t plan to make the GX model any more so why bother spending $ on adding new features, right?

  • @wonderboy1998

Hey, GBY! I personally own a 2011 GX460 [Luxury built trim package] that I purchased for $24 grand back in Sept. of 2018 from a Porsche dealership in NJ and I reside there [the truck is in between good and excellent condition]... it had 35k miles on it, 1 previous owner, Starfire Pearl with the Ecru interior with all the "bells and whistles"... except for the cooler/icebox in the center console/compartment and the tonneau cargo cover, but it has a DVD/CD player built in with the sound system [Mark Lev] with Tvs on the headrests and the RSCA button [just above the center diff. button]. The dealership had it under "GX460 Premium model"... I'm assuming they did not know it was a "Luxury trim package" with the drivers attention monitor, front and side view cameras, etc. blessed me!🙌💯

While the Mercedes was fun to drive and had a lot of bells and whistles, I was tired of it being in the shop every other month and being bogged down with costly repairs. The GX is a much welcomed change. This one is a much simpler machine, very reliable and classy. I enjoy driving it. My only complaint is that there aren’t any plug-ins for electronic devices in the backseat area...it’s super annoying, especially if you have kids. Also, the visor is too thick to hold any garage/gate openers, so I have to keep them in my console. I’m happy with mine and plan on driving it until the “wheels fall off”.

Yeah there’s definitely a lot of discussion on this. Ultimately from what I gather is that Lexus tuned this 4.6 for smoothness and running premium fuel plays a factor in maintaining that over 100s of thousands of miles, along with less carbon buildup, etc

@@TheTopher GX 460 does not have Direct Injection. That increases the reliability and reduces HP. The probably did the high octane tune to squeeze more HP from the motor. I do wish they'd worried more about moving the torque down in the RPM range a bit. Overall it's a great motor. Built for the Middle East.

People will complain about “being outdated”. Well, for those who don’t lease their cars will regret buying the car with all the gadgets when gadgets stat breaking outside of the warranty. I think we are going through a cycle where people will riot again to have simplicity like this down the road. Cars like these will be worth their weight in gold.

I’m just about to buy a 2015 GX460 that’s had a grill upgrade to look like the new one. Can’t be more excited.
