Oh and lo and behold you’re the dude who does the acheronian sorcerer RP conan exiles videos , I’ve seen those on my ps5 from the “latest captured videos” for the game.
Christy Marx wrote one of my favorite Red Sonja stories, Master of Shadows. Fantastic story of a family of assassins trying to kill Sonja. Terrific story with John Buscema and Tony deZuniga on art.
Its funny how this cartoon had the most dedication to the lore than any of the movie attempts etc. I have fond memories of getting home from school to watch this show, even had some of the action figures. Then one day I get home ready to continue watching Conan.....when to my horror and surprise it had been replaced by 'Doug'....by crom the wrath of 6 year old me was off the charts!
Nice interview. Could use a few more clips of the cartoon for those of us not familiar with it - maybe a separate retrospective video. Sounds like she did some good work
This is great, I’m a big fan of the cartoon and Christy Marx. Can you try and interview more past Conan creators that such as Joe Jusko or Gary Kwapisz for example? Keep up the great work!
Yes, you got Christy Marx, one of the authors of my childhood! The stories she and the other creators at Sunbow were able to tell essentially making 22 minute toy commercials is still so impressive to me. Thank you, O Chroniclers of Nemedia!
CTA was my first exposure to Conan. It aired about an hour after I started school, so I had to set my VCR everyday to make sure I didn’t miss any episodes. I crossed my fingers that the beginning or ending wouldn't get cut off and of course there were the occasional programming delays and severe weather warnings to ruin a recording. Eventually, though, I managed to get all 65 episodes transferred to some cheap and very grainy VHS tapes. I didn’t read the comics or original stories until a couple decades later, but going back to the show now I really appreciate how many REH references they crammed into these episodes. Ram-Amon being held down by a Naga-eating plant, I am guessing they borrowed that scene from The Scarlet Citadel, when Conan rescued Pelias from a man-eating plant with roots extending down to hell. While there may not have been a strict continuity, the show could not be randomly watched, as there were some episodes which depicted real progress for Conan’s quest and dedicated fans could definitely detect an order and organization to the series. The way they got around depicting violence by using star-metal weapons which would transport serpent men to the abyss was genius and really made sense within that contained universe. I have heard this show criticized by more hardline REH fans, but they’re wrong. This show was amazing and excellent and that accolade comes with no caveats. It was just that damn good. I could and have watched this series from start to finish over and over again, but if I had to pick favorite episodes it would be the following: Dregs-Amon the Great The Amulet of Vathelos The Terrible Torrinon Torrinion Returns Birth of Wrath-Amon Escape of Ram-Amon Into the Abyss Once and Future Conan A Serpent Coils the Earth parts 1-3 There were a ton of funny one-liners as well: Dregs: It was the eggs or my life? Wrath-Amon: WRONG CHOICE! Ram-Amon (to Dregs): Still your forked tongue, you pandering worm! And yet you are right, for now that I have the Amulet of Vathelos and Greywolf’s star-metal staff, I truly am the greatest of all Wizards! Ram-Amon was my favorite character and I wish they would have used him in more episodes. Hell, I wish they would have had him return as the head of the Snake Cult and conquer earth. I love it when a good bad guy wins! It’s a damn shame that there was not a second season to wrap up the hanging plot threads. Will Sasha and Misha ever be fully cured of their lycanthropy? I would like to hear Christy’s thoughts on what would have been in Conan the Adventurer season 2! I know it’s a big ask, but it would be cool if Titan Comics could do a story about these CTA characters. Maybe a What If in their new SSOC magazine?
I think you mean a third season. The show was broken down into 2 seasons: Season 1 (13 episodes) and Season 2 (52 episodes). There was also a sequel series called Conan and the Young Warriors, but sadly it didn't continue any of the storylines from Conan the Adventurer.
I really like the references to the REH stories. In the past, I had documented which episodes were referencing which story. I also notice that some episodes in either title and/or story made reference to Greek or Norse mythology.
@@blueghostfire9038 Thanks for the correction regarding the fact that there were two seasons. I tried watching an episode of Conan and the Young Warriors, but did not like it, so I never saw more than one episode. I remember that for some reason they changed Conan's voice actor and had the CTA Conan voice actor play a villainous monster instead.
As always, many thanks. Wow, making Conan the Barbarian for kids?!? The lady sure had her work cut out her. Conan is definitely R18+ material. But having the chance to work with Stan Lee? What an honour ⚔️

Great for this to come out on my 38th Birthday! Even if I only noticed it now... When it comes to Conan the Adventurer, that was my second entry into the World of Conan (1984's Conan the Destroyer being the first, and 1982's Conan the barbarian being the Third) Got the first 39 Episodes on DVD (Tubi TV only just got cleared into UK again 2/3 days back and it's not viewable there for me yet), but the more I watched (and still watch) it, the more depth and detail I can make out in it: Characters that have more than just two dimensions (for the core cast at least) with their own lives, responsibilities, distinct characterisations, stories, and motives. Even taking the time to Flesh out some of the Villains making them more than cardboard cutouts, even if it sounds like doing it fully wasn't possible due to certain constraints, I still appreciate what could be done. Great Worldbuild, so much packed in, you really see and feel where they live, and how the supporting cast aren't always there owing to having their own lives and duties to see to. My Personals Top 5 Episodes would be (in Descending Order): Birth of Wrath-Amon A Serpent Coils the Earth Part II A Serpent Coils the Earth Part III WindFang's Eyrie The Sword of Destiny - I think this one had a different Animation Studio make it which gave it a LOT of extra Spit 'n' Polish And on top of all that, enormous What If potential steeped into it, if just a small change here and there is made. As for people to try and interview? Well there is the obvious option of Schwarzenegger. But there's also John Walsh, maybe William Stout? In any case, I suspect you'll be spoiled for choice.
Ironic, I recently went back and watched the Conan cartoon a few months ago. Love that Roy was Christy's in and later was able to bring him on it reminds me of the creator of Samurai Jack starting on Ren and Stimpy and later getting his mentor a job on Jack. Awesome hearing how she came up with ways around studio mandates and all the great shows she had a hand in. Really good watch.

Great guest and great interview! I really enjoyed her little anecdotes from working with those companies and her interest in Red Sonja's shitty origin. It's good stuff. Apparently there is a script that depicts Conan in his declining years in a kind of 'Unforgiven' or 'Logan' type scenario, and Arnold is 110% keen to do it. What exactly is the downside here? Arnold is clearly established as the quintessential Conan in pop culture, and the first film actually has an epilogue promising to explore Conan's life as King. Unlike other continuations/reboots (Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Ghostbusters, Terminator etc etc) Conan is the only one that actually makes sense outside of being a nostalgic cash-grab...even from the perspective of the original Howard tales beginning with Conan as king of Aquilonia. I know purists are hankering for a Howard-accurate depiction of the Cimmerian but this will never happen. Even a line by line adaptation of Hour of the Dragon would end up annoying someone for some reason. And normal people don't care anyway. Villeniuve's Dune has shown that a heartfelt adaptation can veer from the source material and still maintain the integrity of the property (which to my mind is what Milius' Conan did back in the day) and Top Gun Maverick has shown how a sequel 35 years after the fact can actually succeed with flying colours. I think it's a no-brainer. Even normal 'non-Conan' people would find such a film fascinating IMO. It would probably even kickstart renewed interest in the '82 movie which in turn could potentially instigate a Conan EU (tie-in novels, comics etc). Am I missing something?
