This man was AMAZING. I visited St. Augustine after seeing a documentary called DARE NOT WALK ALONE, and I was determined to learn more about what happened in that City. I wound up visiting the ACCORD Museum and was able to speak to the women running that museum right in Dr. Hayling's former dental office. I learned so much going there, and I'm in awe of how brave Dr. Hayling was to keep fighting and organizing the young people there as they stood up for their rights. St, Augustine and the events that happened there was CRITICAL to getting the Civil Rights Bill was passed when it was. What's really strange to me is how EVEN TO THIS DAY, the leaders and Visitor's Bureau in St. Augustine STILL don't want to discuss what happened there with the Civil Rights movement. They're hoping everyone will forget I guess. I persisted, and I personally took the "Freedom Trail" in Lincolnville, visited the Hilton Hotel where a major battle happened in the swimming pool of all places, and the former Woolworth Lunch Counter now on display in a bank near the Town Square. St. Augustine needs to be on a 'Civil Rights Trail' Tour of some kind so that people can learn more about U.S. history and courageous people like Dr. Hayling. You will literally walk in the footsteps of Andrew Young and Martin Luther King when you go there. Get off that Trolley Tour and learn the whole truth about St. Augustine...it's unbelievable.
