  • On a rather brisk Sunday morning, I decided to head down to the city of Lodi and railfan for the entirety of the morning. Given the fact that I have yet to railfan the Union Pacific Fresno Subdivision, I believe it was long overdue and worth finally checking out. I had originally planned to film here from Amtrak 702 until Amtrak 701 with any freights in-between, but traffic was minimal and didn’t pick up until after 701 passed through. The Lodi Amtrak Station in particular is rather nice with decent amenities and a visitor center, as well as crossings to both the north and south; although it is interesting to note that there was a fair amount of surrounding city noise as the day progressed. Ultimately though, it was a nice outing with a decent amount of train activity for a Sunday morning of railfanning.
Train 1 : Amtrak 702 with F59PHI #2014 & CabCar #8307. With the early morning light appearing, 702 breaks the Sunday morning silence. Note the reversed set for 702. Typically all Bakersfield bound San Joaquin trains are CabCar leading. Friendly engineer on #2014 !
    Train 2 : Union Pacific QRVWC-12 with C45AH #2600, SD70ACe #8855, #8538, #8518(DPU), & C44ACCTE #6073(DPU). Nice crew on this train with plentiful horn action and moving at a decent speed !
    Train 3 : Amtrak 701 with F59PHI #2007 & CabCar #8312. Friendly crew on 701 with some nice horn action !
Train 4 : Union Pacific ESTRV-12 with SD59MX #9921 & #9918. This light engine move appeared to the south just as Amtrak 701 rounded the corner out of Lodi, following close behind.
    Train 5 : Union Pacific MWCRVC-11 with C45ACCTE #7912, #8054, #7692(DPU), & SD70ACe #8748(DPU). Note #7912 is one of the only few C45ACCTEs with lettering and not a flag on the locomotive.
    Thanks for Watching !

Another fine video, Lodi looks like a quaint community, love the basic colors and the trees were beautiful. Great trains running in your part of the country. Thanks for the view!

Tweety Swauger Thank you ! Yes, the weather is getting cooler and the foliage are changing colors, but it certainly makes for a pretty sight. Glad you enjoyed the video !

Gregory Ferguson Thanks ! I definitely have plans to railfan the northernmost part of California sometime in the near future. If anything, it’ll be a trip comprised of Dunsmuir, Redding, and Chico.

Awesome! Didn't Lodi have some street running in the 90's?

+Trains N' Stuff Thanks ! Yes indeed, in fact, Lodi still sees occasional street running with rail service to the General Mills plant. There are also a number of local customers in the east side of Lodi that sees weekly switching to Stockton with the Central California Traction Company (CCT).

That's cool! I thought they removed some track down a street somewhere in Lodi. It also seems that there used to be a yard where the depot was, or something of the other.

+Trains N' Stuff Yes indeed, you are correct again ! It was only a couple years ago that the space where you see the ballast opposite of the platform had a good sized yard. UP ripped out the track and left only a single main back in the later part of the 2000’s.
