High hopes for this year. If and Joe comes back will make a strong rotation even stronger and maybe only then Preller may make a move if one is warranted.
But for now before Spring Training even starts the Padres have only LF and maybe catcher that require special attention, bench spots and and filling out the bullpen. If any trade happens, it might open up an additional hole so I doubt anything would happen unless a special opportunity presents itself.
Thing is, I doubt any trade could improve immediate chances and I'm guessing that Preller will feel there's plenty of time to think of next year and beyond so the priority should be on the best team that can be fielded Opening Day.

Prellers decision to pay Machado and Bogaerts like they’re both MVP’s is what got them into the spot they’re in. It is risky to give players a 300 million dollar contract. It seems that AJ overpaid for those 2. Who knows what other offers those guys were getting. Right now it seems like those deals have them in a tight spot.

@ An owner gives a GM a budget. A GM looks at his Roster and evaluates he needs. He then looks at available free agents and decides which ones fill his needs. That is how literally every professional sports team functions. Owners are not baseball people. They are financial people. That’s why they have a GM. To evaluate talent and spend their money most effectively to improve their team. Maybe you should heed your own advice. Any GM should have been able to advise their owner that Bogaerts and Machado are not worth what their agents are asking for them.

Almost goes to the World Series is an overstatement. Outta 7 games vs the Mets in season, padres only won 2. Mets had the padres # all season long and that was majority before the Mets caught fire. They still had to face that Mets team that had them all season long!
