Monkey Beaver VS TreeMotion saddle showdown

  • The comparison video I wish I had when I was buying my first saddle! Here are two of the highest rated most loved saddles on the arborist market. The Monkey Beaver saddle is a collaborative effort between arborist August Hunicke, Samurai Jo, and New Tribe. The Teufelberger Treemotion Evo is the second iteration of one of the most loved modern saddles. I hope you find this comparison helpful in your choice! Climb safe.

    Josiah (Strider) gets REAL tree-man points!! Love that your knowledge is made evident by a one-take articulately spoken review. I would add that our harness supports more gear/big saws better than the TM. MB is a work saddle 💪🏻
    You'll go far with youtube Josiah. Nice camera work too.

      August Hunicke Thanks August ! Just following your lead! I started watching your videos after meeting you at arbor fest west 2016 I believe, and never stopped learning :) As to all the video production, the credit has to go to my Brother Hosea He’s the cameraman/editor extraordinaire! thanks for reaching out. Reading this made my day.

    I was taught by old school climbers. Basic saddles. Just the nylon strap with no back support. 2 buck straps. Standard low budget saddle. I learned so much from so many different guys. That was roughly 20 years ago. Tying in with a single rope two half hitches over the d-rings into a figure 8 into a taught line and a stopper knot. I just started upgrading my gear over the last 5 or 6 years. I have a weaver step in single D ring tie in with a high back. I use a prusik and a micro pulley. I've tried several climbing knots. I personally like the valdotain tresse for my ascending and descending. Some ppl don't like it but for me it's perfect. It doesn't get extremely tight and it doesn't get so loose that you slide down. I'm gonna try others but that's my favorite one so far. Also this career is always changing and upgrading. Don't ever think you can't learn anymore cause as soon as you do they'll come out with new equipment and a easier way to do your job. Like the beer commercial says.... Stay thirsty my friends. I think that way about educating myself in this industry. If I'm always thirsty for knowledge and or learning the newest ways. I'll always be on top of the newest things. So when a customer starts asking 500000 questions I can give them the answer and give them the facts. Thanks for this video. It was extremely informative and easy to follow. You step by step answered all my questions and even answered questions I didn't know I had. Lol.

    Nice review man! 👍🏽 I’ve got a Sequoia and what’s now called the lite TReeMo saddle. I’m doing a lot of coco palms and next saddle will be a Monkey Beaver. TreeMo is great in a canopy trim, prune but a little too wiggly in palms. I think August and Joe’s saddle would bee a great coco saddle. It’s basically-up, clean and down or if close enough, traverse.

    Really appreciate the review! Your channel is becoming one that I look forward to the notifications from, thanks.
    I almost exclusively do pruning (huge oaks to small crape myrtles) & swear by New Tribe’s Onyx. It is a less bulky saddle (not as much padding & subtler gear loops) with a very similar fit to the monkey beaver (no discomfort to the boys in my experience). Has the right attachments in the right places to fit all my stuff without any unused extras. Rides more like you describe the treemotion, but I have never been in a fully adjusted treemotion saddle, so I wouldn’t know. Personally, I hate suspenders & chest harnesses because of the way things ride & torque in extreme positions or restrict my breathing, so not going there. Keep up the thoughtful videos, thanks again brother, & Stay-Tied-In!

    I am an older beginner with the MB saddle which I bought because they are made and sold by August Hunicke and co. for whom I have much respect.
    Question please......... did you shorten the original bridge on your MB saddle? ... it appears that the bridge ring rides lower on your upper torso than it does on me (but this might be because I wear my saddle higher). Thanks!

    Another great video. If the Treemotion is pinching you, try wearing it below your waist. I believe it is designed to ride between the hips and waist. The Monkey Beaver is more burly for large removals, and naturally sits above the waist to hold more gear / large saw. I have one of the original Monkey Beaver and Treemotion saddles, so the new MB and EVO might be different.

    Fantastic video but I'm still a bit torn. The double side Ds and the double bridge option make it a desirable upgrade to my crowded Buckingham Traverse Deluxe which I'm otherwise really happy with. Maybe you could review the Ergovation? The older Traverse has been dependable and I like the solid belt and back support.
    I'm on spikes a lot and often carry a bigger saw so not sure which way to go but the MB suspenders look great for that. Has anyone got any feedback re durability?

    • @Stridertrees
      @Stridertrees  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Durability wise they have both been excellent, no complaints whatsoever, just replace the bridges frequently and keep running it. My first saddle ever was the Sherrill tree Edge saddle which was essentially a re-branded ergovation, and it wasn’t remotely as comfortable as either of these two. If you have the chance sit in a treerex saddle by Edelrid it’s another excellent option, that’ll be the next saddle I do an in depth review of.

    • @Stridertrees

      I’d probably say you’d have better luck with the MB saddle. The surface area on the leg loops is much greater which I expect would end up being more comfortable for a bigger climber.

      @@leoga8521 24in is too short of a hitch cord for half in rope like blue streak, and 8mm although it can work with a handful of hitches, generally on 12/13mm ropes folks will use 10mm hitch cord like ocean polyester for example. 8mm works great for those under 12mm ropes. It takes a lot of hitch cord types and lengths before you find a perfect fit for a particular rope, and you'll probably find that some of the spare hitch cords you have lying around that may not have worked for one rope at all, will come in handy for the next rope.
