First verse is a childhood perspective (written by luke). Second is from his co writer who wanted a tribute to his son in the military. And third is of a father passing. Kind of a full life story of father and child.

@billyYouSoCrazy, it’s not just about the troops, the third verse was his dad dying and he didn’t wanna say goodbye. The first verse was as a child, second verse he was leaving for the military and third was his dad leaving.

    • @gadzoda
      @gadzoda 4 ปีที่แล้ว +27

Olivia B the first verse was when he was a child and was scared of the dark. His dad told him he’ll always be there with him even if he’s not physically there, so don’t be afraid of the dark.
2nd verse was when the individual was in the military and was getting ready to deploy. He was telling his dad he’s nervous about the deployment (churning in his gut) and he doesn’t like the fact he won’t be able to talk to his dad when times get rough. His dad said the same thing, I’ll always be there with you even when I’m not physically there.
The last verse his father was on his death bed and he told his dad he doesn’t know if he can continue his life without his best friend (his dad). His dad told him even though he’s dying, he won’t be gone. Like he has since he was a little boy, he’ll always be there, even though he won’t be physically there.
It’s not a “military song.” It’s just a passage of the middle of the man’s life telling the story of the relationship he has with his dad.

If you had paid attention, last verse his Dad was dying and telling him that even though he was dying, he had passed on the traits of Fatherhood.... So, even though he was leaving he wasn't going nowhere!!! My husband of 30 years has passed and my youngest son has passed, so my other son looks at this song as if it was written for him!!

Back in November, I went to Luke Combs concert. He introduced this song, started to sing, and much like you, I had thoughts racing through my head. I lost my dad when I was 5 years old. I still remember every summer I would go to visit him and it would be the best time of my life. I went down to the hospital with my mom and there was one specific moment I will always remember. My dad was laying in his hospital bed, hugged me tight, and said the exact words that are in Luke's song. "Even though I'm leaving, I ain't going anywhere."
When Luke started singing this song, I broke down. Luke's voice is so strong that even if he doesn't mean to make you cry, he will.
Sorry for the short story. Just reminiscing.

For everyone telling him what it is about, I think you forget why music is so powerful. We hear these songs and relate them to our own lives. The meaning that the songwriters and singers are putting out there hit us all in different ways. The most powerful songs last a lifetime, and almost everyone respects them for a personal connection to the lyrics that someone else may not have had. The video creator had life experiences that the song touched for him, bringing him to an emotional state. I'm sure that Luke would be just fine knowing that.

This makes me think of my relationship I have with my father. He just turned 70. I realistically know my time with him on this earth is dwindling down. He has survived 2 severe strokes, and is on blood pressure meds. I dread the day that he is no longer with me. I definitely don’t take my time with him for granted. He is my rock, and role model. I just hope that when I retire from the military this coming March, that he is right there to see it. I love my father immensely.

Reminded me of when I was in boot camp and we hadn’t spoken for two years, and I found the courage to call him and mend our relationship. Spent the next 20 years being best friends with my dad. I usually Listen to the country radio station in my car. They played this song a lot in 2019, Lurk Combs was on the radio, telling the story behind this song. "I wanted it to kind of have that contrast a bit where it was softer and more lyric-driven in the verses,” explains Combs. “Then the chorus could still be this big singalong thing, but having it in that kind of upper register and giving it a little bit of the raspiness that people have become accustomed to with my stuff.”
Dad holds the boy’s hand at the end of of that first verse and reassures him in the chorus when he’s left alone: “Just ’cause I’m leaving it don’t mean that/I won’t be right by your side.”
That sets up the final verse, the surreal moments when dad transitions to the other side. “Daddy, I’m afraid,” the now-grown son says to his aging father. Again, Dad offers his hand and the same words of comfort.
The middle verse proved to be the trickiest part. They needed another major point of separation and eventually decided on a son preparing to head into the service. It twists a bit as he does his best to act adult - “Daddy, I’m afraid” becomes “Dad, we’ll be late.” And the father is now just as fearful as the boy, realizing there’s no guarantee he’ll see his son alive again. Instead of holding his boy’s hand, Dad hugs his neck, and “Even though I’m leavin’ ” becomes “Even though you’re leavin’.”

It may not be my direct case but the person I'm currently seeing is CAF and soon as soon as they went Reg Force they were posted 17hrs from where we're both from. He's comin home again soon but 3 weeks is never really long enough where I also have family in a different part of the province where we're from. So it kinda tends to be the situation of he's just getting back as I'm leaving. This song hits me in the gut because it's how I feel when his time is over and he has to go back.

As a military wife (and now a military momma).. I just 4 months ago had a serious discussion with my now daughter in law... the absolute toughest job in any branch of the military is that of a military wife.

This song to me starts with a child being afraid of the monsters outside his room and dad reassures him he is not going anywhere. Then goes to the child becomes an adult going off to war and being afraid and father again reassures him he will always be there. The last his father is dying and son is afraid too go on without him. Father assured him that he’s not afraid and that even though he will be gone he will always be a n his heart.

I’m one of the moderators for Luke Combs’ official Bootleggers fan group, so I’ve obviously got a deep understanding of what this song is. Like some other commenters, I think you missed the point of this song, as far as the journey that the story takes. The story in each verse, is told from the son’s perspective throughout 3 time periods. Him being scared at bedtime, him being scared as he himself leaves for the military, and being scared as he watches his dad pass away. The choruses being told by the dad, as a response to his son. I expected BYSE to log in, but I think this time, your focus on the military part sidetracked you, and took you away from the big picture here. Still a big fan of your channel, but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t a bit let down by this one.

I relate when you said that your daughter didn't understand why you were not around and when you came home she treated as if "why I are you here". I've got 2 boys and I'm a off shore fisherman deckhand in the summer/fall so I leave for 6 months of the year. Gotta do what you can to provide right? When I return not only did they change so much but there is definitely some " getting used to each other again phase". Thanks for the reaction. Can you react to Country Boy from Aaron Lewis (former lead singer of the band Staind) if you haven't reacted to it yet.
