I remember wanting to be like Effy at the time so badly. I really looked up to her. Thinking back, it was a pretty unhealthy thing to aspire to be like
Tony and Effy are so close cause they’re both actually toxic people and they understand each other in that sense. Effy didn’t start showing her toxic-ness until gen 2 though (when she actually started talking)
With Tony it worked well as a form of character development. He starts off as a smug, shallow, egoistical narcist but towards the end of S1 he starts to change into a more mature, caring and reflective person. He has to confront the consequences of his actions and the effects they've had on other people. For example in episode 1, season 1 the way he helps Effy hide her all night partying from her parents isn't him being a good older brother, he was actually being a bad older brother there. It's the most satisfying kind of character arc I think to see an arrogant toxic character gain some humility and become a better man. It happens to Steve in Stranger Things, to Jamie in Game of Thrones and to Hank in Breaking Bad. Effy's behaviour though and the fact she causes a lot of pain to Cook and Effy isn't really her being purposely cruel though, in season three it's the result of her being afraid to show her true feelings and probably feeling confused. In season 4 she's suffering serious mental illness so you can't really blame her for her behaviour in that one....
Damn... kids actually want to be like Effy. She isn't happy, she is just a child who knows nothing about life, because she went through shit her entire life. She isn't a "queen", she is in pain. For a fictional character maybe she seems cool and an idol for teenagers, but if you see a girl like Effy in reality you should try to help her or atleast understand her. (I don't believe that a person like Effy would accept the help of the others)
I think most 'cool' girls would hate Effy in real life and make fun of her. Effy is the opposite of a real life teen queen. She is troubled, doesn't try to be liked, isn't fake and desperate for popularity. I went to a typical British school, girls like her were being bullied or excluded most of the time and cutting themselves. She's cool on television because she shows us how shallow typical teenagers can be, so that when we see complex characters we're fascinated by them.
I just noticed that Effy *literally* plays with fire a lot and that her final episode has her *metaphorically* playing with fire, hence its title: Fire.

I mean, yes but also no. She’s more like the depiction of how pretty people can appear to be treated well but actually never trust anyone around them bc they know they’re only wanted for their beauty
Hated how they developed her character later on. It became too soapy and unfitting for someone like her. Effy had the potential to be the best character in the entire show but no, we had to link her to 3 best friends, have a love triangle with 2 of them and insert loads of drama when she decides to be with one of them. The psychiatrist plot drove me insane(no pun intended).
The psychiatrist plot bothered me too... I’ve been in therapy since I was like 14 and started taking meds at age 16 ... I hate how they always make psychiatrists and therapists evil on tv There are really unprofessional ones but... it’s usually not like that It was so cheap
@@user-jn2pl7bp6v I had a psychiatrist who was just like that. Even lost his license after he prescribed someone a ton of meds and they died. I think everyone here wanted to be Effy because the actress Kaya who played her was gorgeous and we all aspire to be someone better looking than us, especially when we were young and impressionable.
yeah but she ditched her friend like a bitch. plus this show isn't realistic cause how the fuck she didn't speak a word while her friend was talking so much. she didn't even say "hey" to the guy who entered them in the party. all she did was looking pretty and flirting with her smile.
I'm I the only one who's kinda disturbed by the age difference between the actress of effy and actor of Spencer. Like Kaya was 15 years old and the actor 25.
I think that is the point. Effy is a fast little girl that goes around trying to hook up with older guys and get high with them. Effy showed up on her own accord and made out with the dude. The guy had a job at the warehouse and he wasn’t interested in Effy, he was pretending to be to get revenge on behalf of Michelle’s ex boyfriend. By the looks of it, it was very easy to do because Effy is dumb and slutty but she thinks she is all that.
3:33 I really love that this sequence of Tony being rejected by his friends when he tried to call them is then repeated during 3rd season with Effy in a similar situation
aKreature honestly it was his voice and the way he speaks, the "No, they don't" Tom Payne still does that movement with his head lol When he first appeared I didn't really make the connection lol
effy is a tragedy, and all i truly remember thinking of her when i watched skins (i was 9 when it first came out, so way too young to properly grow up with and remember it), was how much she scared me. she was wild, lawless, alone, in pain. she needed help, but couldn’t accept it. she ached for love, but rejected it. i *was* effy for a while, not by choice - i didn’t want the attention, the parties; to be idolised and chased after and dehumanised. i didn’t want to hurt people, or lie down in the gutter at 4am in the fucking rain to cry because i wanted to die, but i didn’t have the courage. i didn’t want to keep crossing the road when i was near the river that ran through my city, because i couldn’t trust i wouldn’t “accidentally” fall in and drown. i hated myself, and it’s even clearer to me watching this as a really young adult how much she hated herself, too. effy showed so many signs of being mentally ill, but the most clear to me are symptoms of bpd. having it, it can be horrifically easy to see it in others if you watch closely enough and as a character, she embodies it to the point of it being - again, terrifying, because it’s so real. it was for me, and it is for so many lost, self-destructing girls (and those who don’t grow up as girls, but are seen as one) punishing themselves for shit they can barely control; for being human; for hurting. effy is a tragedy, and after all this time, i‘m still fascinated by her, by my capacity to empathise with her.
I thought she was amazing in series 2 like one of my favourite characters; and that’s always the sort of character she was supposed to be. They changed the writers in series 3 and 4 which I think is what made her so annoying and vapid
Omg I was always like: why do all the boys like her? Is it just because she’s mysterious?! You just made me realize that I also liked her in the beginning just because she was so mysterious...
To be fair in season 2 she is actually very wise, she has a certain wisdom and humility to her, even maturity, then in season 3 and 4 I think the new writers just read her character completely the wrong way and didn’t really understand her or what they were supposed to be doing with her Even in season 1 she had extremely wise eyes, her facial expressions say a lot, and the little she does say is wise Then 3 and 4 writers just ruined her and made her a cliche 🤮
In series 1 we don't really know her because she doesn't interact with the rest of the group. We just know she's secretive, likes to party and that's about it. In season two she's probably at the most normal and relatable. She wears less makeup and her clothes are more normal to start with, she also has normal interactions with her family and wants to help her brother get better. She also helps out Pandora too. In season three they go back to the ice queen concept for her, she wears lots of black, heavy makeup, she does wild things but also acts aloof and distant. They show she does have emotions though, like when her parents split up. She seems very confused in season 3 and afraid of showing her feelings. In Season 4 though her character becomes really messy, even loses her memory or something weird like that, so her actions aren't really within her control so it's hard to relate to that for most people.
Exactly, it's all a game to him. He'd never have changed without Josh scaring him into realising that his actions can hurt some of the people he cares about.
I did not like what they did to her character at the end. She did not grow and evolve and frankly effy was capable of doing so. Yes she has a job but she was in risky relationships, hurting/ using friends, and ultimately got into legal trouble with thr insider trader. Super sad she deserved more as a character
This show poisoned the minds of thousands of young people who now think that drugs, casual sex, and being an alcoholic are the most desirable things in life.
No, it showed all that but also showed the consequences of it too. In Season 1 Chris parties a lot, gets his house trashed and eventually becomes homeless. Tony and Sid both realise that true love with Michelle and Cassie respectively is more important to them than casual sex, Sid learns this before he's even had sex. Characters like Jal are there to represent teenagers who do take their studies very seriously and are interested in more than partying. I can't think of any drug use in the final episode of season 1 because the characters have matured and grown up. Give it another watch, there's nearly always consequences to bad character choices.
Ah prove you can have no personality and still get by as long as you’re good looking To be honest it’s actually really sad, if she wasn’t so beautiful people would be actively trying to help her, but because of her appearance it’s seen as a cool and unique and sexy character trait I do actually really like the character by the way, first 2 generations anyway
Regardless of how toxic those times were, I still miss those times when mysteriousness was a thing. Nowadays when literally everyone and everything is out in the open, I feel like nothing is deep or smart or beautiful anymore. I just don't feel anything.
People only hung around Effy because she had drugs, knew where to get the drugs, and she was promiscuous. The people that were into her were pretty low class and uneducated, and Pandora hung around her because she needed to make friends to fit in at school. The guy that she is hanging with here was hired by Michelle’a ex boyfriend to get Effy high and trap her in the rave house. Effy thinks she is playing everyone but she is being played
I don’t blame them for going out at night and trying to find soemthing fun to do 2007 was a era of early internet Practically no social media A whole different world tbh
Sometimes I wonder what exactly led her to being in a different school in season one, and to not talk what happened to make her this way. Likely it's trauma but we will never know exactly why.
I was just like Effy as a teenager and it was horrible, I was lost, bored, in pain and puttig myself in terrible situations. That's not something to glorify.
Everyone in this comment section is coping, hard. The person who said they have pretty priviledge may be jealous, but at least their honest about it, mad respect.
I remember feeling so much second-hand pain at how she didn't reply in any way to her parents cause when I spoke, I often spoke quietly so I imagine my parents also thought I was just ignoring them
People used to compare me to Effy before I ever watched the show. Now I can see why. She’s not someone you want to be like. I was dealing with shit. Not cool or mysterious. I was severely miserable and hiding it with an aura of mystery and quietness.
Come to see it now, Julie has a very interesting characteristic too. I didn't see it back then. It's a shame the show only treats her as a 'noisy, dumb sidekick' and how every other female character except Effy is treated like that. I get that Effy is such an interesting character too, but I feel like all the other characters didn't need to be sacrificed like that in order to make Effy look cool. You can still be cool without making other people look dumb.

Well. I don't think 14 year old girls do more than that
effy is the definition of pretty privilege
Chill
@@elijahvalongo9528 its true tho💀
I mean, yes but also no.
She’s more like the depiction of how pretty people can appear to be treated well but actually never trust anyone around them bc they know they’re only wanted for their beauty
She is the definition and the blueprint of having problems at home and your parents not paying attention to you until it is too late.
@@dysmissme7343 Effy trusted in the drugs that any stranger injected her
I remember when she almost even speak
Hated how they developed her character later on. It became too soapy and unfitting for someone like her. Effy had the potential to be the best character in the entire show but no, we had to link her to 3 best friends, have a love triangle with 2 of them and insert loads of drama when she decides to be with one of them. The psychiatrist plot drove me insane(no pun intended).
i disagree. i loved that season, dont hate how they wrote effy
It just shows that she is also a normal person with problems. In season 1 she was basically nobody at all.
The psychiatrist plot bothered me too... I’ve been in therapy since I was like 14 and started taking meds at age 16 ... I hate how they always make psychiatrists and therapists evil on tv
There are really unprofessional ones but... it’s usually not like that
It was so cheap
@@user-jn2pl7bp6v I had a psychiatrist who was just like that. Even lost his license after he prescribed someone a ton of meds and they died. Some just bad and I think its unrealistic to only show good ones because thats not where we are at the moment. There are some really bad eggs in the mental health business because generally they wont get called out for it and they know it. Its a power move
thatgirlDolly
I’m sorry you went through that... as I said there are really unprofessional ones
I don’t think media usually shows just “good ones” the crazy or evil psychiatrist is almost a cliché ... there are barely good ones
But again, I’m sorry you went through that, therapists and psychiatrist should be there to help you, not to hurt you
this lifestyle is not as fun as it seems. i almost died three times, went missing twice more. it's terrifying and i'll admit the thrill/adrenaline is beautiful but it's not worth the risk. it's constant pain and constant distraction
Please elaborate omg are you okay???

I think everyone here wanted to be Effy because the actress Kaya who played her was gorgeous and we all aspire to be someone better looking than us, especially when we were young and impressionable.
yeah but she ditched her friend like a bitch. plus this show isn't realistic cause how the fuck she didn't speak a word while her friend was talking so much. she didn't even say "hey" to the guy who entered them in the party. all she did was looking pretty and flirting with her smile.
@@0yael003 things you can do when you’re pretty

They dress like a target version of Avril lavigne
Hahahahahaha accurate
I'm I the only one who's kinda disturbed by the age difference between the actress of effy and actor of Spencer.
Like Kaya was 15 years old and the actor 25.
@Imogen McCready thats what I said, the actor was 25 and Kaya was 14/15
Thats creepy.
Imogen McCready they mean the guy actor that Effy/Kaya made out with was 25 and Kaya/Effy was only 14
@@ThingsILikke right but a real 14 year old little girl had to make out with a real man in his mid 20s which is the fucked up part
The fact that i had a friend exactly like effy...Im glad she is on the right path now even tho we don't talk anymore.
3:33 I really love that this sequence of Tony being rejected by his friends when he tried to call them is then repeated during 3rd season with Effy in a similar situation
6:15 OMG that's Jesus from The Walking Dead!
I didn't know Tom Payne was on Skins
Shittt! That is him! Didn't even realized til I read your comment and rewatched the video.
Mila I have no idea how you caught that lol
aKreature honestly it was his voice and the way he speaks, the "No, they don't" Tom Payne still does that movement with his head lol
When he first appeared I didn't really make the connection lol
omg how did I never notice that!??
Omgggg!!!!! Never would’ve noticed
Effy will live on forever.
i love how tony and effy split the 'daily express' sign. effy has the daily (s)ex above her bed and tony just has 'press' lmao
effy is a tragedy, and all i truly remember thinking of her when i watched skins (i was 9 when it first came out, so way too young to properly grow up with and remember it), was how much she scared me. she was wild, lawless, alone, in pain. she needed help, but couldn’t accept it. she ached for love, but rejected it. i *was* effy for a while, not by choice - i didn’t want the attention, the parties; to be idolised and chased after and dehumanised. i didn’t want to hurt people, or lie down in the gutter at 4am in the fucking rain to cry because i wanted to die, but i didn’t have the courage. i didn’t want to keep crossing the road when i was near the river that ran through my city, because i couldn’t trust i wouldn’t “accidentally” fall in and drown. i hated myself, and it’s even clearer to me watching this as a really young adult how much she hated herself, too.
effy showed so many signs of being mentally ill, but the most clear to me are symptoms of bpd. having it, it can be horrifically easy to see it in others if you watch closely enough and as a character, she embodies it to the point of it being - again, terrifying, because it’s so real. it was for me, and it is for so many lost, self-destructing girls (and those who don’t grow up as girls, but are seen as one) punishing themselves for shit they can barely control; for being human; for hurting. effy is a tragedy, and after all this time, i‘m still fascinated by her, by my capacity to empathise with her.
you are so loved and worth it 🥺❤️
idk why but the dude at 6:16 sorta visually reminds me of freddy from generation 2
When I saw freddie this dude came in my mind
She has a type
I think we find Effy so cool in season 1 is, because we don't know her. When we got to know her, she became uncool and somewhat annoying.
To be fair in season 2 she is actually very wise, she has a certain wisdom and humility to her, even maturity, then in season 3 and 4 I think the new writers just read her character completely the wrong way and didn’t really understand her or what they were supposed to be doing with her
Even in season 1 she had extremely wise eyes, her facial expressions say a lot, and the little she does say is wise
Then 3 and 4 writers just ruined her and made her a cliche 🤮
I think it‘s because everyone liked effy without her even trying to be popular. That‘s basically every insecure teenagers dream.
Honestly, watching Skins is making me feel like an angel
When you rewatch skins as an adult and realise Tony was a shit brother for helping his underage sister go out and do god knows what
Exactly, it's all a game to him. He'd never have changed without Josh scaring him into realising that his actions can hurt some of the people he cares about.
I always loved their outfits!
The entire episode is to make her look "cool"
Exacto
She doesn't look very cool at the end when she's in hospital. (not the first time she'll be there).
I think this episode was to show the downside of Tony's actions (effy being dragged into it)
@@conorhoney7776 ure right on the ball. she got roped into an unfortunate situation bc of her brother's poor choices.
@@caliisfkinbored because of his cruel actions! This show was unbelievable. Tony's character arc was totally out of left field
loved effy more than anyone else 👌
I did not like what they did to her character at the end. She did not grow and evolve and frankly effy was capable of doing so. Yes she has a job but she was in risky relationships, hurting/ using friends, and ultimately got into legal trouble with thr insider trader. Super sad she deserved more as a character
The lil bit of skins music mash up at the end makes me feel sad for no reason

Season 2....Effy began to be an important character...
Effy didn't do shit in series 2 besides her central episode that shouldn't have existed in the first place

This show poisoned the minds of thousands of young people who now think that drugs, casual sex, and being an alcoholic are the most desirable things in life.
It really does glamorize some serious problems.
@@happygolucky7458 yes. but its also a work of pure art.
It's amazing how Effy changes since her first episode
I can't believe it released 10 years ago, gosh ♥
Ah prove you can have no personality and still get by as long as you’re good looking
To be honest it’s actually really sad, if she wasn’t so beautiful people would be actively trying to help her, but because of her appearance it’s seen as a cool and unique and sexy character trait
I do actually really like the character by the way, first 2 generations anyway
can we agree that we all want or we alredy wanted to be like effy
Regardless of how toxic those times were, I still miss those times when mysteriousness was a thing. Nowadays when literally everyone and everything is out in the open, I feel like nothing is deep or smart or beautiful anymore. I just don't feel anything.
Cassie was a better character than Effy, change my mind.
literally effy is cool and everything but she was also a b*tch and people only like her because she’s pretty . but cassie is pure
@@lucyx3881 Cassie is life.
i agree!

Looking back, I was 13 when I first watched this show. Im 22 now and my craziest partying years was 14-16 .. kinda explains a lot lol

Little badass
Effys lifestyle was terrible, her family life and all.. then how she made the decisions for her life
her friend was amazing
People used to compare me to Effy before I ever watched the show. Now I can see why. She’s not someone you want to be like. I was dealing with shit. Not cool or mysterious. I was severely miserable and hiding it with an aura of mystery and quietness.
People are obsessed with the Joker too, but that's the difference between real life and fiction I suppose.
Lee W true. I just wish more people knew to separate between liking a character and trying to become it
wow those kids were wild, what were the writers thinking
Come to see it now, Julie has a very interesting characteristic too. I didn't see it back then. It's a shame the show only treats her as a 'noisy, dumb sidekick' and how every other female character except Effy is treated like that. I get that Effy is such an interesting character too, but I feel like all the other characters didn't need to be sacrificed like that in order to make Effy look cool. You can still be cool without making other people look dumb.
i lost my precious 4 years of my life doing so in London. Really it's a sort of pain all life
