Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! This video appeared on my home page and I watched it. I use public transportation all the time and I know that the site uses Googlemaps--but doesn't save my addresses. Now, I'm going straight to Googlemaps for the same info without having to type addresses in each time. It's the simple things that can change your life!!!
Dotto you've done it again! I love the asterisk trick.. My favorite thing to do on a map is just kinda browse and see what's around. And the street view throwback is killer too!
It's amazing how far they've progressed with internet maps and satellite imagery in the last 15 years. I remember back in 2000 when Terra Server was the latest thing on the internet. At that time all you got was black and white satellite imagery that covered just the U.S.. The server was slow and the resolution was undefinable below 400 feet. Now they have just about the entire world covered in color and 3D. With Google Earth you can see the terrain in the oceans. For about $15,000 you could build your own Google Earth Liquid Galaxy machine with five HD monitors.
Greetings Dotto, I actually had a practical application for the time view. Earlier this year I was finishing my dissertation in ethnomusicology (in other words musical anthropology). I did field work in New Orleans back in 2010 and the time and street views helped me collect data that I'd missed or forgot about. It also helped me figure out what happened to some of the buildings I visited that no longer exist or drastically changed. Peace, Love, and Breath!
I like the new spoken intro coming before logo and theme music. Also, nice update of the logo sequence, with refreshed music and a sound level closer to that of the main part of the video. Good tips on using Maps. I did not know about the asterisk! (By the way, Google calls the little guy Pegman.)
Great informative summary of Google Maps features, especially the asterisk. Thanks! By the way, the little stick-man guy on Street View is named Pegman, because he's shaped like a clothes peg. Cheers!
the only things that make that bla bla bla noise in my car is the wife, but i agree i should find a 'muffler' for her hahaha great content and superb tutorials, loving it and sharing with my friends, thank you.
I was hoping for newer info: H ow about the "layers" and "importing" I loved it the OLD way, you just went through. I could have a start point, a destination and could add the step by step directions and map,so simple and then print it out or save. Now I struggle, I don't understand the new terminolgy and how to use. Do you want me to go back to Mapquest?
Hi, great video thank you. Just as a matter of interest which screencapture software do you to capture your video? I am particularly interested how your image is superimposed on the computer screen. Thank you
Man - I was hoping to find how to add multiple points route, or a circle route with 8 points to follow, 4 example when I'm visiting Madrid, and my starting and my ending points is Hostel, but the remaining 6 points are different sighting places in this city. All done in walking mode. Please add that tip.
This was informative and interesting. Great job. Per your last tip is it possible to to see lets say all the restaurants between the staring point and the destination Thanks
thomas matera Thanks, I know you can filter for things like restaurants, which will bring them into the map, not sure about attaching them to your route, You can check out the Google Help forums as well, they are actually really good for this sort of specific question.
Thanks, dottotech. I had increasingly started using MapQuest because as good as those new features are, knowing what to click became confusing when all I wanted was directions. Will have to play with this.
Hello, Dottotech. Have a quick question about your filmmaking. I am aware some of your gears; webcam, mic, and etc. Have a question about Editing program. I've noticed you are using "Screenflow" as a main editing prgm. Are you using Screenflow for your green screen shot also? or do you use Finalcut pro for that specific? Thank you for your answer in advance.
Didn't know about the star thing. That's super! I would also recommend using the "report a problem" when the best route is not shown or when a business datum is not accurate. BTW, the marine drive skytrain station in reality is quite different than the picture on street view. There's a huge building over it now.
Cool vid... and I only used it for directions. Who knew! 😃👍🏾 Can you do a vid on the new Google Meet, as many of our schools are using this instead of Zoom for Distance Leaning during the COVID-19 pandemic?? TFS. Be well!

I have a question. how can you set google boundaries / walls, (I don't know the proper term) you can check out around 2:54 - 3:02 there seems like your mouse is touching a boundary.. how can I do that on my 360° ?
Very good video and explaining about more features on Google maps! I also like map quest too and they have a drive routing feature for mapping route addresses, you can add 20 some addresses ! Margie
Good day, Hope you can help me... Want to drag my destination when I do "get directions" Where we are the towns are far appart and want to get the Km's from piont A to Piont B... I use to do that, but now it has change. Thank You.
Hi Steve Dotto I'm from Pretoria, South Africa and I follow your channel religiously. Considering doing a video on a CRM system? I noticed that Infusionsoft was mentioned in a couple of your videos. Any thoughts? Thanks for the great work you are doing!
Another well done and very informative video Steve. It is great that Google saves directions so I can view them on my android device. Sadly, since the last major update, I have only been able to get it to save the routes that Google suggests (unfortunately not always the best route), I have not been able to get it to save an edited route. Do you have any recommendations to get around this?

I can feel your enthusiasm when you talk about Google, but I keep telling my service people (taxis, Purolator, UPS, etc.) not to use Google Map. Why? Because it shows the wrong address. It shows xxx McCardy instead of xxx McMurchy. The McCardy place is a bunch of townhouses and I have a bungalow. The big problem is that McCardy place has it's entrance on McMurchy and xxx faces McMurchy too, but it's still 10 minutes away. Google really got it wrong and it's really frustrating, especially when you're waiting for your taxi at 6 am to go to the airport ... and no one can fix Google.
Looking for ways to keep these labels on the map; not as a Legend down the side, but put several such labels on the map. I have seven locations each with a short reason (description) for its purpose. How do I keep all seven on the map?
I haven't really used Google Maps, because I am a Windows Phone user, so I run with Here Maps on my cellphone. However, after fiddling with Google Maps, the options are quite nice. I found out that you can customize the Transit option to favor buses, subway or trains, which is neat. And you even get options to reduce the amount of transfers or walking. I was rather surprised to find that you can actually get a share link for the directions. That's definitely a top notch feature.
interesting. Looking at the video one can see he is doing this on a mac, so I thought perhaps I can download this to my windows pc, but I then only find downloads for google earth which I have and has of course street view. I can't seem to download google maps, other than on a mobile device. What am I doing wrong?
Hi Dottotech! Thanks for the great tips! I've just begun a one year drive trip from Winnipeg to Mexico (and beyond!) and would love to utilize Google maps to its fullest, but feel I'm missing something. I've created the base map, but don't seem to be able to make it as "dynamic" as I thought I could - adding our stopping points and plotting each day's travels...my "add driving directions" option is greyed out - do I need to buy "PRO" to make this happen?? Any help would be much appreciated!
Nadine Speirs Sounds like an incredible adventure. I don't believe there is a paid version of Maps (unless you are talking about Google Earth). Hey Steve...Here's something that may help someone. I made a table of contents for each tab I have. (I have about 150 tabs and 10 Notebooks.) And then I made another tab and called it 'Tables of Content," inside of which I have all the other tagged tables. This way I can simply go to that easy to find table note and there is the tables of content for ALL OF MY IMPORTANT TABS. What a time saver this is! I titled the main table as '1 Tables of Content' so that it will stay on top of the list, and I also dated each note on the day it was made so that in the future I will have an idea of whether or not to update it. I hope this helps someone, as I find it fast and easy to work with. Oh..and I also put this note on my shortcut list so I can find it quickly and easily and therefore have all of my notes right there in front of me! I tabled all my important tabs, but for those who use Notebooks you could do this same thing.
