The writers tried to get fans to accept Laura and Steve instead Steve and Myra like they tried to get us to accept Harriett #2 as the new Harriett instead of the OG Jo Marie Payton...it just didn't work. Myra's exit from the series was a bigger kick in the face to fans like Tasha's was on Everybody Hates Chris. Her final line being "See ya, wouldn't wanna be ya!" ugh...come on black sitcom writers...come on!
Hmm. Writers forcing fans to like a relationship that has so many bad implications attached to it instead of a good one that actually had a natural flow to it. Why does this sound so familiar? Oh yeah, Food Wars! And for any fans of the series who ship them, I don't wanna hear anything about what Souma's Dad said about finding someone who will push his cooking skills to the limit or how relatable her and Souma's situations are because I wouldn't have as many issues with it as I do if it didn''t take Erina finding out that Souma just happened to swim out of the balls of her favorite chef to get her to stop treating him like shit! #TEAMMEGUMI, BITCHES!
@@ZeldaEd123 Damn, youre mad lol. Won't tell who to ship or anything, carry on, just the salt is funny. Someone smarter than me could probably turn that into a more in depth food wars joke.
Honestly I feel like the fact she was suffering with cancer was the reason why she wasn't very prominent granted not a good reason but an understandable reason
Let's be honest with ourselves all of us would love to have someone like a Myra to be in a relationship with considering the fact that she's a mixture of Beauty and intellect.
myra was a real woman and loved steve for who he was. i could never in good faith get behind laura and steve. very nonsensical. i understand how when you’re young you may like someone who doesn’t reciprocate it but when you grow up conventional wisdom tells us to go where we are appreciated. Even when i’m successful or as successful as steve was i would never go to where i wasn’t appreciated at first. #myradeservedbetterfr
Even as a child, I much preferred Myra over Laura. I couldn't fathom why Steve would ditch his loving girlfriend in favour of a girl who'd made it clear that she wasn't interested in him.
@@PrincessSybilla77 I somewhat disagree!! I believe Laura liked Urkel, but she couldn't say it or show it because she was afraid of what that might do to her rep in school.
as a kid we couldnt understand how he let that whole family treat him that way. my cousins and me wanted war with that family we wanted myra to body laura.
@@Partyboy22 That's usually how it goes in high school & beyond!! The high quality woman usually goes with the pretty boy, bad boy athletic types. Laura only cared about Urkel when he became Stefan.
@Harry Engel You can't be scared to take a chance.. You don't have to change the Character just let the Character grow up.. You still keep the characteristics like for instant Urkle loved Cheese 🧀.. Well he developed but he never changed his love for cheese.. He just grew up and develop other things as a teenager and as an Adult.. I hate Shows that wouldn't let their characters grow..
The show should had ended with Steve almost losing Myra because of his constant pursuit with Laura. Then, Steve let's Laura go and begins his pursuit to win Myra back and succeeds. Steve and Laura sends the wrong message to young boys who has a crush on a girl. Straight up.
.......I actually didn't know she died in 1998. now i feel terrible for myra. kudos to michelle thomas for giving her all when she was so sick. she is missed!
@Keen Dietrich I mean yeah but thats how cancer is. Your health slowly declines I don't think it's really indicative of any sort of conspiracy. Plus it's the fact that you can believe you are fine until its too late that is the scariest thing about cancer if you ask me.
@@HumorousLOL I think he means literally a different person. When he went through his machine and became Stefan, the good looking version of Steve. Plus, Steve eventually became astronaut who was very successful. Laura wanted that money
@@HumorousLOL money bro, that's the change. Laura was a average woman with the money thing & Myra was the rare woman because she loved Steve for Steve, not money.
What was most annoying was they gave Steve and arc where he did in fact love Myra. He told her that he had spent his whole life chasing a dream(Laura) but she(Myra) was right in front of him. Which solidified their relationship. You don't have Steve go through THAT kind of arc (which is a great one and a lesson a lot of people could take from it) and have him turn around and get with Laura. It just undercuts everything he'd learned up to that point AND ACKNOWLEDGED.
I hate when a character get much needed development for them to grow, only for it to be ruined due to a dumb story or writers not letting go of the past.
That’s true. That was a significant episode. Steve realized that it was a real possibility that Laura’s feelings for him were not going to change and that to continue to hope for that would be fruitless. That’s when we thought that he was going to give Myra a chance. But then later on he started thinking he had a chance with Laura again.
Lmao That isn't love. He literally basically admitted he had to settle for Myra because he felt Laura would never be with him. I swear, people make nonsense up at this point. Myra ignored that fact and stayed with him regardless. She knew what she was getting into, she wasn't stupid.
Even as a kid I couldn't help but notice she was cuter than Laura ( I liked Laura also)... But Laura only liked Steve once he became handsome. Showing us she was shallow. That always bothered me. Once I saw Steve get drunk on the roof, I knew he was dope.
You know what bothers me? The stereotype that nerds get rejected and overlooked by women. it's not true. Let me tell y'all something. Nerds have the same taste as other man. They want the vixens, they want the models, they want the popular girls, even nerdy guys don't want brainy girls like Myra. They don't want nerdy girls like themselves. They want the girl everybody else wants. This also proved to be true in this sitcom. They made it seem like Steve was going to end up a 40 year old virgin, like he had no sex appeal, like he was invisible to women. When in reality, Laura was one of the most popular girls at school. Myra was throwing herself at him, beautiful, intelligent, beautiful smile, big titties, and she was a true sapiosexual. He didn't even care about that. Is it that nerds get rejected? Or do they want women that don't want them? Because there's a difference.
@@Ms9mmBeretta Right. Just like in one season is was confirmed that Steve could even ball and shoot three pointer when he played a game on the court with Ed, Waldo and some others. Another example. Too bad that they couldn’t let Steve hook up with Myra. If I didn’t say this before but the only sad part slash downside was having to later write her off as having passed away offscreen because the woman who played her in real life did. At the very least Laura would have likely consoled him and ultimately hooked up with him given that they were already good friends.
@@Ms9mmBeretta And many average looking nerdy women would very much like to get with very attractive athletic men, and some of them rather pursue that than go for average looking nerdy guys, what exactly is your point here? of course everyone is sexually attracted to the most attractive people, its only natural. The issue here is that steve was not realistic, just like how some women aren't realistic, he should have gone for laura. Don 't turn this into some male issue please. Both sexes can be unrealistic with what they pursue. Please don't pretend you haven't seen thi scenario from either sex. Also please don't pretend this is some woman hating comment, I literally said that both sexes can fall into this type of behaviour.
My man, that’s wassup. Myra was more attractive, had a better attitude, and didn’t need him to turn into Stefan or make bank in order to really like him. She deserved so much better.
They undercut her character on purpose. Steve should have realized Myra was the one and moved past his oneitis for Laura! Myra made TOO much sense for Steve thats why the writers made her into a stalker.
Steve was Laura's stalker for years before she finally "gave in" to his advances. This was an EXTREMELY unrealistic scenario. Women just don't do that, plus Myra and Steve had WAY more in common. But I do understand this was a sitcom and the show decided that it was time Laura and Steve got together, for the ratings I guess.
@@MHO999999 it seems to be a popular sit-com “trope”, that if a person is persistent in pursuing their love interest, the person will give in to them eventually. But tropes are notoriously unrealistic. In real life, such persistence would be viewed as stalking, and would only drive the other person further away. I’m sure it was all about ratings.
Laura was being obnoxious and she broke up with stefan to go after steve who was stilll seeing myra at that point, plus her reasons for dumping stefan is bullshit.
Glad I’m not the only one who realizes that Laura only started liking Steve once he became successful . And on top of that her and Myra was supposed to be friends be she had no shame and taking her man. 🤦🏾♂️
Not really anybody could guess steve was going to end up successful. Plus Stephan was successful to because of his genius in charm and charisma so she could've had the looks and money but she chose steve. She became attracted to him after he kissed her at the auction she didnt look at him as someone who could satisfy her until that. Also when she saw him naked. But she started appreciating him past shallow reasons once she opened her eyes to all the charity work he did and lived with him. Honestly that's pretty realistic put two people together that are comparable but dont know it make them live together for months eventually they will like each other. Humans adapt lol
Plus you gotta remember, Laura set Myra up with Steve. Imagine it from Myra’s perspective. Your cousin’s gf helps set you up with a dude, and then turns around and decides to take said dude from you. That’s cold hearted.
@@Linklex7 laura and steve were childhood friends who spent more days with each other than Myra ever spent with steve. 1. He told her straight up if laura gains feelings for me I'm leaving you,and she still chose to date him. 2. Laura didnt owe Myra anything they werent friends because Myra was jealous that Laura had Steve's heart if anything steve was cold hearted.. funny how people blame the woman tho. Steve dated myra for years just to be like I like laura now bye
The thing that always crushed me about Myra, is when she told Urkel she cared about him for who he was. I forget what episode it was, what exactly was said, just that they were at Disney world or something, and Urkel was doing that 'Stefan' thing for Laura. Myra said something along the lines of 'I always loved you the way you are,' implying he never needed to be anyone else but his true self far as she was concerned.
One of my fav episodes is when Steve thinks Myra joins a convent and goes to get her with Eddie and Waldo. Then when they had to describe Myra, Waldo says "big bazooms".
Under appreciated and utterly gorgeous. She was one of my favorites characters, and honestly I never wanted Steve and Laura to get together. I had hoped they would have made it so Steve grew up and realized his love was Myra and he didn't need to chase Laura anymore.
Unfortunately, Michelle Thomas was dealing with cancer at the time so the writers had to find a way to write her off the show. That's why they broke them up.
They could have recast Myra just like they recast Michelle’s character in The Young and the Restless. I remember when she died. And now I see how she was sick. When the show started she was super voluptuous and starting towards the end she was looking very small. Even on the Young and the Restless she was tiny from when I remembered.
@@shanehaughton6912 yeah get another actress to play myra. Plus Michelle was so great she continued to act even while sick. I wish she had did chemo or something to prolong her life but it was what it was. That was her circle
I remember when she died, I was 11 and refused to believe it like it was not possible for such a vibrant vivacious woman full of such life, this beaming light of positive energy to suddenly die, I did not accept her death and lied to myself and made believe that she just quit acting and went to college (I also thought she was only 17 like her character)
The saddest part of Michelle Thomas' story is that recently Jaleel mentioned that after the show, she was working as a waitress in small towns outside of LA just so she wouldn't be recognized to make ends meet. RIP. She seemed like she was a beautiful soul on camera and off camera.
@@maymay5600 I remember reading after she passed that she refused chemotherapy because she thought it would prevent her from having children. But I read that in a tabloid, so I don't know how true that is. If I wanted children that badly, that would suck. But for me, I wouldn't refuse lifesaving treatment for it. I was so sad when she passed away. She was so beautiful and talented, and her character didn't deserved to get dumped for someone who made it clear that they were disgusted by her love interest. Myra loved Steve for EXACTLY who he was, for all of his snorting, geeky, obnoxious, intrusive, high pitch vocal, suspenders wearing, polka dancing, cheese eating self. Laura didn't like him until AFTER he changed. As a matter of fact, Steve went through all those changes with his elixir and transformation chamber just for Laura. He didn't have to do that with Myra. Myra really did get the bad end of the stick.
Wait. She had to work as a waitress to make ends me when she was a regular on a successful show? I mean, Family Matters was one of the most successful sitcoms on t.v. at the time. If I was a producer on the show, I'd be so embarrassed to have someone who is a regular supporting cast on a SUCCESSFUL T.V. SHOW working as a waiter/waitress somewhere. I am disgusted.
Steve told Myra flat out he wasn't interested in her whatsoever and loves Laura with his heart. He never kept her unaware of his feelings and she should've taken the hint the first time. The problem was that Myra refused to accept the reality that Steve wasn't in love with her, thought he was playing hard to get and doubled her efforts to win him over. Aside her helping him change from annoying nerd to a mature adult, she did more harm than help. Myra was too possessive and toxic for Steve's liking.
The sad part is that Steve and Laura’s relationship only happened at the end of the show because Michelle was so sick that Myra’s role had be reduced to accommodate her stomach cancer. They didn’t want to write her out, but they didn’t realize that season 9 was going to be the show’s last. That wasn’t the plan at all. They originally planned for season 10 to be the finale, and for Myra to finally accept that Steve’s heart belongs to Laura. Myra would have found someone who was fully devoted to her and got a happy ending of her own. We just never got to see it because the show was canceled at the last minute.
It was also due to bad ratings and the change of actresses for Harriette that spelled it's demise. White had explained in an interview that he had season 10 planned out and disproving Stephen Langford's claims there was none.
I think Michelle Thomas was such a incredible talent...not just a actress but she had a great singing voice...the supporting cast member role of Myra on Family Matters was something that she ultimately out grew just like she did on the Cosby Show when she played Theo’s girlfriend Justine for 2 or 3 years...side note, in real life...the actor who played Theo on the Cosby Show...Malcolm Jamal Warner dated Michelle Thomas and he has said in interviews that he was in love with her...visited her in the hospital , when she was terminally ill and on the TV One Unsung Hollywood episode dedicated to her story, her Mother said Malcolm would spend hours with her...talking with Her and fall asleep in her hospital room...Michelle Thomas also had a recurring role on a daytime soap opera during the time , when her character on Family Matters was basically being given reduced screen time ...and ultimately written out of the show ...she got a chance to show off dramatic acting chops and incredible singing voice even though she was dealing with serious health issues...Rest in Peace Michelle Thomas..she deserved to be a lead actress in a show like Boston Public or Beverly Hills 90210!
Myra has always been the one for Steve. And Steve should've just let Laura go and move on, like everyone else. He had all the opportunity to let Laura go after all those years of being rejected, but instead, the writers took the different route and paired the two together as if Steve+Myra never existed.
Always thought Myra was hotter than Laura too. I will never forget 1 time when Steve was about to become Stefan again and she said they love you for something that you are not but I love you for what you are.
She was so sweet. It's sad she passed at such a young age. I remember she was on the Cosby show once as Theo's study buddy girlfriend. Beautiful girl and talented.
It would have been great if they had did an episode and had let Malcolm Jamal Warner(Theo)guest starred and came back as an ex boyfriend of Myra. That would have been a great episode.
Thanks for making this Vee! I was a nerdy teen when this show was on and I had a one-sided crush on a "Laura". I remember thinking Steve was lucky to have found Myra, who loved him for who he was. Laura only paid attention to Steve when he changed for her( becoming Stefan). I eventually found and married my "Myra"( beautiful and nerdy) years later.
Myra loved Steve just the way he was..Honestly I think the series jumped the shark when they introduced “Stefan Urquelle” Laura loved a guy that didn’t exist.
I'm surprised the writers didn't try to put Stefan with Maxine after Laura and he broke up, cause Maxine didn't have anyone since her and Waldo had broken up 2 years prior.
@@theonlygoodonehere2259 no but i think jaleel white had some self insecurities when it came to his appearance maybe that's why he didn't anyone to know who he is
It’s not just you my G. She was most def the BADDEST one on the show. Idek what the big deal with Laura. Urkel was such a simp for Laura. Laura annoyed the hell outta me bruv.
Myra supported him, defended him, and never disrespected him to his face like everyone else does; this is especially true of Lora, she treated Steven the worst.
Some of you people have no idea what love is, apparently. 1 Corinthians 13:4-7* 4 *Love is patient, love is kind.* It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 *It does not dishonor others,* it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 *It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.* Myra loved Steve, Laura didn't.
This is a great Myra defense video! :-) I agree with the majority of your points. From a storytelling POV, I can understand why Steve messed up and left Myra- he was never going to let a chance at Laura, however slight, pass. I think it's ok to show characters, in particular teens, making mistakes. Afterall, how else do you learn? What should have happened (IMHO) is that Steve and Laura should have dated briefly (Laura's on the rebound, and Steve has always made being there for her a priority, so she takes advantage of his availability, and he takes advantage of her fragile emotional state) and then they realize that a romantic relationship between them could never work. They break up on amiable terms and remain friends. Laura apologizes to Myra and tells Steve to try to get back with her. Steve, now having realized that that wanting Laura was better than actually having her, realizes he had the perfect partner in Myra, apologizes to her, and tries to rekindle their romance. Myra, still brokenhearted, refuses, citing how Steve always treated her as a 2nd hand prize and had to be pushed by Laura to speak to her. Myra states that she has moved on and moved past Steve. Steve, dejected but understanding, accepts her decision and tells her that he loves her, and hopes that she will forgive him in time (which she will, but the breakup's still too raw). Perhaps at the end of show, fast forward a few years to when they are in College. Have them meet up and reminisce about old times. Show that all three of them are in happy, healthy relationships- with other people. Seldom is your first love the one you settle down with.
I honestly think the thing with Myra and Steve is the fact that we often overlook the people who will give us the world. This fact is overly apparent in life
You don't know how right you are. Romans 8:28-31 28 And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. 29 For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters. 30 And those he predestined, he also called; those he called, he also justified; those he justified, he also glorified. 31 What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32 He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all-how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things? John 3:16-21 16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son. 19 This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. 20 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed. 21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God. Hebrews 4:7-13 7 God again set a certain day, calling it “Today.” This he did when a long time later he spoke through David, as in the passage already quoted: “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts.” 8 For if Joshua had given them rest, God would not have spoken later about another day. 9 There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God; 10 for anyone who enters God’s rest also rests from their works,[e] just as God did from his. 11 Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will perish by following their example of disobedience. 12 For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. 13 Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account. You only have one mortal life to decide to choose the One who would give you the world. Make "today" the day you stop overlooking Him.
Now that you mention it, you're right. It felt like whenever Steve messed up, Carl ended up apologizing more often than not for Steve's mess ups, when Steve should've apologized. This makes you have to wonder how much power Jaleel White really had on that show. The star or the character driving the show never really has to apologize for anything. Vee Infuso is right in that Steve could've given Carl a stroke. The "3-2-1-1-2-3, what the heck is bothering me?" thing was a case in point. Steve stressed Carl out so much.
@@86byrdman If you remember in the earlier seasons of Family Matters, Carl adored Urkel. Remember when Carl taught Urkel how to box in order to fight a bully in a boxing ring?? How about when Carl & Urkel bonded when they stowed away on a train?? What about the time that Carl talk to Urkel about doing the right thing & not trying to play hero when the bank was on Halloween??
I remember even as a kid thinking Urkel was crazy. Myra was absolutely beautiful and actually *liked* him, as dorky as he was(unlike Laura). The worst part is that Michelle Thomas died so young in her life :( R.I.P. Michelle.
I’m all fairness, Steve warned Myra in the very beginning that as soon as Laura shows internet in him, he’ll choose her. With this information, Myra continued to stay with Steve and win his heart
The one who loves you the most is the one you ignore the most. I have had my heart broken by a girl who did not love me back and I broke the heart of a girl who love me with every part of her soul. That's life. I have made my choice and I am willing to deal with whatever consequences come of my decision. I am constantly reminded of all the love she gave me, but, at the same time, I tell myself, "It's for the best that you leave her alone and never bother her again if you cared even the slightest bit for her."
I've watched plenty of your videos, but this one is what made me subscribe. I am still not over how Myra was treated either. To me she was the best girl of the show.
Family Matters is essentially what Full House would be in Andrea Barber were originally only supposed to appear in one episode, but Kimmy Gibbler was such an instantaneous smash hit with audiences that she eventually became a series co lead.
They pulled worse shit on Vicki when they dropped her like a rock after making a big deal out of that Disney World proposal. They can't even hide behind the "the actress was terminally ill" excuse this time. Miller-Boyett had some truly fucked-up ideas about women, and the Valerie Harper lawsuit was just the tip of the iceberg.
I remember being one of the very few people in my circle that still watched Family Matters, and not only did Myra BELONG to Steve, but she was another of my sitcom crushes!
I like how strongly you talk about this. You speak for all fans! There have been so many episodes of siding with Laura but never sides with Myra or takes his own happiness into consideration. Still obsessed with Laura.
*Steve had Low Self-esteem............ Laura (& if you REALLY wanna go down that route, Eddie & low-key Carl too) knew that. If memory serves me correctly, she had Curtis (remember him?) & Stefan fighting each other over her. But in season 8 (I believe), Stefan got a fashion deal & stayed in Paris & she broke it off with Curtis so she didn't have anymore options....... Except one person...who she knew would ALWAYS be there even after treating him like garbage when Steve looked out for her & told her about her (many) BF's who had hidden intentions.......*
All of them dumb as fuck!! She broke it off with Stefan when she could have gone with him In the real world she wouldn’t stay with Steve Steve didn’t need her because he was more suited for Myra. The way the characters were created it made the whole story stupid because Steve and Myra won’t compatible in the first place
Laura got the man she wanted and didn’t stay with her more compatible match Steve got everything he wanted but blew her off for his worse match as far as compatibility They had no sexual chemistry and made for on of the most confusing endings if I ever seen one
Laura should have ended up with Stephan & Urkel with Myra. WE ALL KNOW IT. What they did to Stephan was also cruel as well. You made a another persona, than clone turning that clone into said persona & leaving him alone. Myra & Stephan deserved better.
This show, basically all of Buffy, Ross and Rachel, the gut punch of How I Met Your Mother, Bruce and Barbara What is it was TV shows and encouraging shitty relationships
In HIMYM it was a necessary evil to kill off the mother. The mother was a macguffin, the show may as well have been called how ted ends up with robin. That was always the plot and if they deviated from that it makes the entire series pointless since we got a final episode of them. Better to make the last half of the series pointless rather than the entirety of the series pointless. Also she had to die because we shouldn’t want Ted to become a hopeless sulking creep reminiscing about Robin to his kids while Tracy is in the other room crying about their clearly one-sided marriage. The show had to make it clear that Robin was not the love of his life and that it was the mother. Having them divorce or anything other than a tragic death was an absolute necessity otherwise Ted again becomes an evil creep who actually Urkel’d his own Myra and leaves her for Robin. Better to have the mother die tragically. Now does that mean making the entire last season a wedding of a soon to be failed marriage? No, but the execution wasn’t great but the decision to end the show as it did was correct.
Add Tony and Angela from *Who's the Boss* to the toxic TV relationship pile. That whole show is culpable for so much evil that goes way beyond unfunny comedy. Even so, I didn't believe them as lovers, and Tony Danza is such a horrible actor there's no point in writing good scripts for him. And both those kids were brats.
It’s just supposed to be that the hero of the story gets the person they were after. It’a supposed to be a happy ending but it plays it so safe that all we see is people getting with people none of us wanted them with at all.
I'm glad that you said it about Steve and Laura's relationship. Their relationship felt forced, and it lowered the quality of the show as the ongoing sexual tension was essentially resolved. Laura lost her personality when that relationship started, and it altered the dynamic of the show in a very bad way. I would almost characterize the cancellation of the tenth season as a mercy killing, because the show had gone well beyond where it should have stopped (there's a reason that most long-runners end at eight), and it was clear that the show wasn't going to end by its own volition.
This is the time I started despising Steve. Laura has rejected and mistreated him throughout many years, and finally, after so long. And now Myra, a much more attractive girl, loves him, and he rejects her. This nerd lost his way.
I had no idea she passed away. But tbh your probably right. Myra would've probably have been better served if as a character if she had either confronted Steve about his feelings and either had them break up or have Steve get over his Laura problem and stay with Myra.
I was in junior high during the last few seasons of "Family Matters". I stopped watching the show around that time because not only did it become less and less funny, but I would have given two fingers off my left hand to be with Michelle Thomas for one night. Seeing Steve Urkel pining after Laura despite having Myra as a girlfriend threw salt on the wounds from my never-ending junior high girl troubles.
You have to watch the series to see the evolution of Urkel and Laura. Urkel was a nerdy, klutz that the Winslows tolerated. Then when Laura and Urkel finally became friends, they gave Laura Stefan with a hint that Urkel might mature out of his nerdy-ness. The TV producers realized that Laura loving Stefan kind of made her the most shallow person on the planet. Overtime they dropped seeds of Laura and Urkel falling in love. Urkel's parents abandon Urkel, so the Winslows take him in despite him being a Klutz. The Winslows reluctantly showed that they care for Urkel in this move. Urkel decided to finally get a make over and goes to auction the new him off. He got embarrassed and no one wanted to buy Urkel. So Laura being his friend, bought Urkel while she was dating Stefan. Urkel feeling it was pity, said she didn't have to kiss him, but Laura said, "Give me my kiss now!" When they kiss they both feel sparks. Then they saw each other nude and Laura said Urkel had nothing to be embarrassed by. She started laughing at his jokes. Then her friend saw that Laura was attracted to Steve. When Urkel confronted her, she initially denied it, but they got closer and closer. Urkel broke up with Myra who was always possessive (Hey I loved Myra too, but she was his first girlfriend). Laura decided they would date. At the same time, Myra was so possessive, she was spying on Urkel which ultimate made Urkel break it off forever. But.... Laura was still with Stefan!!! So she had to chose between Urkel and Stefan and she chose Urkel as is. She was more open to his life than she ever as a kid, showing growth. Him going into space was after they were together. You have to accept that Laura evolved into a better character. That the Winslows evolved into being annoyed by Urkel to loving him and bringing him into their family.
I never liked the fact that they ended up putting Steve with Laura. Myra was always there for Steve and she always accepted him for who he was. I never agreed with the ending
At least when Married With Children was dumb enough to bring Seven onto the show they realized their mistake pretty quickly and put him on the side of a milk carton.
I totally agree that there had to be some joke aspect to bringing him on to the show. Considering the show was called “Not The Huxtables” in its testing phase the writers were certainly aware of certain TV tropes and wanted to lampoon them. Now whether that joke landed as well as they wanted or some dumbass at Fox handed them network notes wanting a random kid who knows. If it’s the latter then I can certainly see the writers wanting to foil that plan in the worst ways possible.
You guys realize that the Seven character was a true character but Katy Segal had a miscarriage so they scrapped the whole season as "all a dream." No Seven, no pregnancy...all a dream.
@@TheStormbringer8751 I do remember that whole season when she was pregnant that was horrible when she had that miscarriage and they wrote off all the events as a dream. Did you notice when she got pregnant again she spent a bunch of time in “Wanker County” usually on the phone and when that pregnancy was successful she came back to a roaring ovation after being on a taxi ride through hell hahaha
I didn't know she died but I also didn't realize how old she was at the time of filming the show. Considering Steve was around the same age as I am. Her being almost a decade older than me is surprising.
WOW!! This is my first time hearing from your channel and you hit almost every point exactly! I had an episode where I was Myra's version of Steve to Laura! Obviously it didn't happen, but a guy could dream. I'm not sure when/how the show ended and I think I just phased out of watching it (HS Graduation may have contributed to it). But I loved me some Myra and it was pretty awesome when she was on Young and the Restless. She definitely was/is (R.I.P.) a great actress.
I always thought that Steve and Myra should have always stood together. I imagine that Steve outgrew liking Laura as they both realized a love relationship wouldn't be necessary due to that common friendship is all they need. And I imagine that OGD came into the pitcher at an earlier time and in the last season Laura grew obsessed with OGD and they became a couple, and at the time when Laura decides to dump Stefan, Stefan gets killed off. I always thought that Stefan was too perfect.
Myra was and is that woman that accepts you for who you are and will build with you when you have nothing. Laura is one them women who hit the wall will try to regain ground over the guy who is successful when he didnt have anything
I did read in the original concept for the episode in season 9 "out with the old" Steve would have come to realize he and Laura were better off as friends as Myra loved him for him and never asked him to change. The two would have been married at the end of the season but because of Myra's actress having stomach cancer and dying later that year they scrapped it. Still sucks because Myra deserved better. Since they went with the Laura ending and if season 10 happened Myra was going to end up with OGD.
In my point of view I thing Myra was Steve’s look at himself. I mean given her obvious obsession with him Myra was Steve’s “looking at the mirror” given his own obsession with Laura and may have convinced Steve to better himself for Laura’s sake, but also at Myra’s expense. Still to me the proper conclusion of the Steve and Laura connection ended with the episode “Dream Date.”
Myra and Steve should have stayed together. Laura should have gone to Europe with Stefan at the end of the series. A Myra and Steve spin-off would've been freaking awesome after the final season on ABC. Also, my crush on Myra never faded. RIP Michelle Thomas.
Personally, I don't like how they turned Myra into a psychotic stalker. Why did something have to be wrong with her to actually like Steve Urkel? If anything, she should have been the one to end up with Steve and make Laura regret how shallow she was. Plot convenience is definitely correct.
Very clear perspective. I can dig where you're going. Myra did deserve better, however I feel as though some of the storyline was modified to accommodate Michelle Thomas when she was ill. May she RIP

I'm glad In living color got away with making fun of her....or did they?
I see why Myra deserved better. But I can see why many people would be mad that the writers never got it write on the script. I wish her arc did continue.
I forgot bout the Harriet swap..the entire show was based on her.. when she was on perfect strangers..elevator operator.
*She got swapped out on the last season on what was one of the most forgettable seasons*
Wait what happened with everybody hates Chris? Don't remember anyone getting swapped or leaving the show

@Keen Dietrich I mean yeah but thats how cancer is. Your health slowly declines I don't think it's really indicative of any sort of conspiracy. Plus it's the fact that you can believe you are fine until its too late that is the scariest thing about cancer if you ask me.
Myra loved Steve for Steve, Laura didn't give him a look until he became a different person.
That and when he truly stopped chasing her
Lmao How was he a different person? People can't change? Laura couldn't develop feelings and Steve had to remain a geeky nerd forever?
Laura knew dude was destined to be a trillionaire with them crazy gadgets n she had 1st dibs already...lol
YES!!! He realized he wasted his time chasing Laura and he went with who wanted him. Why throw that away?
Lmao That isn't love. He literally basically admitted he had to settle for Myra because he felt Laura would never be with him. I swear, people make nonsense up at this point. Myra ignored that fact and stayed with him regardless. She knew what she was getting into, she wasn't stupid.
@@HumorousLOL That the way you choose to see it.

Yea true but later in the show when she had to choose out the teo she picked regular steve
@@Ms9mmBeretta exactly which is why eventhough their breakup sucks it was very realistic steve was like any other dog chasing a bone
@@Ms9mmBeretta Right. Just like in one season is was confirmed that Steve could even ball and shoot three pointer when he played a game on the court with Ed, Waldo and some others. Another example. Too bad that they couldn’t let Steve hook up with Myra.
They undercut her character on purpose. Steve should have realized Myra was the one and moved past his oneitis for Laura! Myra made TOO much sense for Steve thats why the writers made her into a stalker.
@Miles Goodison-Fearon Myra liked brainy guys. I don’t think she would have been happy with either Cornelius or Stephan.
The biggest difference between men and women is men see a stalker as a potential mate💯🤣
She was envious towards Myra having Steve's undivided attention
Plus you gotta remember, Laura set Myra up with Steve. Imagine it from Myra’s perspective. Your cousin’s gf helps set you up with a dude, and then turns around and decides to take said dude from you. That’s cold hearted.
And it goes into the concept how tv use to intentionally demonize darker skinned women.

31 What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32 He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all-how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?
John 3:16-21
16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
Hebrews 4:7-13
7 God again set a certain day, calling it “Today.” This he did when a long time later he spoke through David, as in the passage already quoted:
“Today, if you hear his voice,
do not harden your hearts.”
8 For if Joshua had given them rest, God would not have spoken later about another day.
She truly added spark to the show and the triangle fued between Myra, Urkel and Laura was and still is one of the best in television history.
Tragic she passed away, but she was one of my favorite characters in any sitcom growing up.
Carl often had to apologize when Steve owed him an apology.
His apology used to be "did I do that" then he stopped saying it...n Carl wanted to go upside his head...lol
Thats what peeved me the MOST. The lack of true accountability.
I remember even as a kid thinking Urkel was crazy. Myra was absolutely beautiful and actually *liked* him, as dorky as he was(unlike Laura). The worst part is that Michelle Thomas died so young in her life :( R.I.P. Michelle.
I cried real tears when she died she was so beautiful
Myra was an absolute doll. Urkel was the luckiest guy to even gain her attention.
The actress who played Myra deserved better....a promising career curtailed by an incurable illness. 😥
Cancer sucks!
She broke it off with Stefan when she could have gone with him
In the real world she wouldn’t stay with Steve
Steve didn’t need her because he was more suited for Myra. The way the characters were created it made the whole story stupid because Steve and Myra won’t compatible in the first place
Laura got the man she wanted and didn’t stay with her more compatible match
Steve got everything he wanted but blew her off for his worse match as far as compatibility
They had no sexual chemistry and made for on of the most confusing endings if I ever seen one
Laura should have ended up with Stephan & Urkel with Myra. WE ALL KNOW IT. What they did to Stephan was also cruel as well. You made a another persona, than clone turning that clone into said persona & leaving him alone. Myra & Stephan deserved better.
Myra was a badass! And was so gorgeous!! R.i.p., michelle Doris thomas!
Who else got excited when he put up the Supernatual photo?!
This show, basically all of Buffy, Ross and Rachel, the gut punch of How I Met Your Mother, Bruce and Barbara
What is it was TV shows and encouraging shitty relationships
At least we have Bob and Linda Belcher. And Gomez and Morticia Addams.
Because will they won’t they pairs guarantee a long run for the show.
People often want who they don't have, and have who they don't want.
Ginger was my favorite spice girl as a teenage boy too! I thought I was alone. Home girl has THE BEST body. Oh my…
Dude! I agree I had a weird love for ginger too!
JUST ONE NIGHT!! FOR REAL!!
And I gotta agree with you, Vee, Myra was the better match for Steve...And, the actress was beautiful.
At least when Married With Children was dumb enough to bring Seven onto the show they realized their mistake pretty quickly and put him on the side of a milk carton.
I think the whole thing was planned as a joke on the trope
I think it was the Writers Trolling the audience, but it backfired. 😆
I always thought, Myra was prettier than, Laura.
Thank you for this video. Helps me to explain how ungrateful Urkel was.
yeah also blame the writers and creators they also need to get a different actress that looks like Michelle.
I didn't know she died but I also didn't realize how old she was at the time of filming the show. Considering Steve was around the same age as I am. Her being almost a decade older than me is surprising.
I miss Myra! She was one of the most beautiful humans I've ever laid eyes on. Laura was gorgeous, but she wasn't Myra.
Thank you for crediting her work. She could have had a bright future.
So much respect for how you ended that.
I was 8 then and Man she was such a beautiful damsel I’m 31 and literally watching this in a puddle of tears man ❤️ 🌹 she is so terribly missed
Appreciate you doing this man. Rest in Heaven to Michelle Thomas
(RIP to her)I loved this show growing up
Myra was and is that woman that accepts you for who you are and will build with you when you have nothing. Laura is one them women who hit the wall will try to regain ground over the guy who is successful when he didnt have anything
Myra > Laura
Preach, I was rooting for Myra!
If I was Urkel oh my i wouldn’t known Laura in the first place I’d take Myra all day even if I rejected a billion dollars to keep her
Are we just gonna ignore the fact that TH-cam is now forcing 3 ads in a row instead of 2?
Very clear perspective. I can dig where you're going. Myra did deserve better, however I feel as though some of the storyline was modified to accommodate Michelle Thomas when she was ill. May she RIP
Waldo ruled after he quit being the bullies sidekick.
Played by Larenz Tate
@@myronsanders4563 Ty very underrated supporting actor. Even as a bully Waldo had a good heart. Ty Larenz Tate. I believe he could've been awesome on chappelles show till the cult messed with him(Dave)....thanks Oprah your show has always sucked. I'm glad In living color got away with making fun of her....or did they?
Bottom line: The rebound chick never gets the guy. Never fall in love with someone who's in love with someone else.
Too bad he didn’t “love” Laura he was obsessed with Laura. And at some point he should have let Laura go
Well you know the saying. If she says no, it doesn't mean stop trying it means keep pestering her, until she says yes lmfao 🤣 it works in romcoms
Stick around long enough until she's ready to settle for you.
So agree 💯🎉 I've been binge watching myra family matters video for a few days now.
No idea she passed so quickly after the show ended...
That's probably why Myra and steve broke up
Michelle Thomas had cancer, which worsened by the 9th season
I see why Myra deserved better. But I can see why many people would be mad that the writers never got it write on the script. I wish her arc did continue.
