Leonardo's birthplace is a building located in Anchiano, 3 km from Vinci, within a hilly landscape which has remained similar to what Leonardo da Vinci has contemplated since childhood; it is connected to the city by the Green Road, an ancient path that winds through the hills and centuries-old olive groves of Montalbano. Leonardo da Vinci's birth, on April 15, 1452, in this farmhouse is attested by an ancient tradition, accepted by the historian Emanuele Repetti. The house was part of the buildings belonging to the Villa del Ferrale, owned by the Masetti family. On June 22, 2012 it reopened to the public after a restoration with the addition of a modern museum layout.
