Here’s a tip I’ve learned along the way when repainting eyes, start by sketching them out on the doll with watercolor pencils then you can go over them with the acrylic paint. It’s easier to get them to look more even that way. I think that you did amazing by the way!
i think that only works if you go over the doll with the MSC type of varnish first (it's great though), or else the pencils dont stick to the face. but you can also "sketch" with lighter coloured acrylic paint (ones close to the doll's skintone) if working with only acrylics. for example using light brown thin acrylic paint to mark out where the outline of the eyes go, and just painting it over.
Sadly watercolor pencils wont show up without Mr super clear. Also Toya mentioned she wants to keep the budget low and accessible and MSC is pricey and hard to find without ordering online. I think she also wants to the option to wash away the paint if she doesn’t like it.
Msc is very toxic, and I think Toya does not want to use very toxic chemicals, or that's at least what I have observed. I really appreciate it, too, since I have MCS ( multiple chemical sensitivity) and love to see Toya come up with alternatives to chemical stuff ❤
@@kluski3423 I just grabbed one of my dolls to try this out, and yes. It will show up however, she'd need to use black or a another dark color for it to work
When repainting a doll I found it easier using colored pencils I had soaked in hot water to draw the features and decide what colors I wanted, then I paint over with acrylic paint. The fact you did it without that step is impressive! Good job!
Also You can use any matte varnish on the doll before you start to do a transfer with watercolor pencil. As long as it give you that slight textured finish where you can draw on it is fine. I believe there are non-toxic alternatives!
I still remember watching you paint on Sophie or chloes lips in a video, and just seeing this made feel like I'm a kid again. You are my childhood and I live your videos so much 🫶🏼🫶🏼
a tip i recommend is sketching out your design with a colored pencil that a similar color to the skin tone, but bright or dark enough to still see!! that way you have a guide for painting on the features. you still did fantastic! she came out beautifully 💖💖
Your enthusiasm & honesty comes through in every video. I'm relatively new to your channel but have found you to be the most helpful in giving alternative ways of doing crafts. Thank you for being you.
Toya you started my journey into the crafting world I remember coming across your videos a few years now and being mesmerised by all the crafts you did with the most simple things, I was simply starting into rerooting dolls and then you showed us how much more we could do, rooms fully furnished, clothes, food, and even small changes like body swaps, eye changes, lip color etc. You opened a world with so many possibilities to this day I am a hardcore fabsome bestie and avid fan of yours and you did amazing, I have tried to repaint by doing over the factory face paint (easier but also takes practice) but to fully repaint I have also tried and it's not easy at all, mine came out awful 😂 so you did a great job. I wanted to comment before but been sick these couple of weeks 😪. Thank you for keeping to inspire us all these years. Thank you thank you thank you. ❤❤❤
Wow, that's a terrific painting of her eyes! It is challenging. I've hand-painted eyes for my porcelain dolls and it's a long repeat-repeat-repeat process to get them balanced and proportional. I decided it's not my favorite thing. I've only re-touched one Barbie's eyes, changing them from green to blue, adding some high gloss ModPodge for shine. She looks better now. Great video here, thanks for the pointers.
Your dark lip color looks so much nicer than stark bright pink usually seen on darker skin tones! I also think the smaller eyes are more realistic, too! You did a great first time painting from scratch! I wish I could be as satisfied with my own work, but I end up wrecking it in the end! I'm happier designing and sewing fashions for Barbie. For now, leaving the painting to the experts!😃 TY!
You did such an amazing job! Also don't get too hung up on the symmetry, because if its not major eye wonk I think it adds a nice touch of realism because of everyones asymetrical faces 😊
Love the eyeliner trick!! It is really helpful 😊 The new lip color looks phenomenal!! And for this being your first repaint, it turned out really well (I can definitely relate to the struggling with symmetry)
Toyota, I knew you'd do a beautiful job! I totally understand the nervousness though. Removing factory paint is such a permanent thing to do. Now you know you can fix the dolls you find too pixelated. I was going to suggest trying really sharp color pencils like HeXtian. I was so thrilled to see his comment here! It's kinda like when my favorite Marvel characters join forces! Oops! I kinda geeked out for a sec, lol! 🤟🖖😅 ✌️💜🐸
Applause and thanks for sharing, Toya! I like the smaller, more realistic eyes. I like the idea of customizing dolls. The original doll was lovely, but making a doll over is another way of creating. Good luck with your future endeavors!
As someone whp started off repainting by overpainting dolls, I find it much easier to do the outlines first in a lighter colour then proceed to fill in the colours on top. Doing the outlines helps me edit things a lot better as I layer on more paint since I'm used to just adjusting factory paint. It's easier for me to wipe off bad linework first than it is building up the eyewhites and colours and THEN realising things are extremely wonky when i put on the eyeliner haha. This is such a good result though, I hope you feel encouraged to try more repaints!
OMG You did a great job! I've always wanted to try repainting my dolls faces but I'm not sure if I can do it. I love that you tried and made them even more beautiful! ❤
Your repaint is totally giving me modern day Dionne vibes from clueless!! She’s my favorite from that movie!!! You did such an amazing job by the way! ❤❤
@MyFroggyStuff Toya, you did great! But if you ever do this again and find you're having trouble with symmetry, turn the doll upside down to do the second eye. It's a lot easier doing the same eye "twice" rather than mirroring it, going from one side to the other.
Mad Props Froggy! Your painted eyes and lips look amazing! Love the subtle details. R.e. using acrylic paint, have you seen the acrylic pens? Maybe that would give you some more control? Thank you for providing/testing a doll customising process that is more accessible for lower budgets and avoids harmful chemicals
Amazing attempt! I don't think I could do better than that for a first attempt! I have been watching @PoppenAtelier and drooling over her work. Now you've added this to your repertoire...unstoppable! You give me another extra push to try this myself!
So proud of you Toya.....you did a great job but I don't have the courage so I will keep painting over the factory paint because after years I'm still nervous about repainting 😂🫣🤭
that looks really good!! I often repaint dolls, but I don't go in with acrylics straight away, I use coloured pencils for sketching first. And you worked around a camera as well, which makes it even more impressive!
Well done~! To narrow down features you can always use a toothpick, dip it in acetone and slowly "scratch" away the parts you don't like and replace them with acrylic paints.
Love this 🤩 Modifying the dolls is so much fun when you take your time, even when you’re not as confident in your own abilities 😁 You did fantastic, and I can’t wait to share my own attempt on IG😉
Hi Toya, I don't normally comment, but I have to say that the repaint came out great, she looks different and beautiful. Thank you for your videos, I enjoy them very much
that turned out great toya!!! i would love to see more repaints! as a tip, you can draw the face on paper first before painting the doll so you figure out what you want it to look like, and also you can practice painting on dolls with bigger heads since you can do bigger eyes and stuff then which is a bit easier when youre starting out.
While watching this....the song by Felix from Stray Kids starting playing in my head : " Level Up , Level Up, Level up!!!" . You are definitely leveling up miss Toya!!!!!! Good Job!!! can't wait to see more of this from you!❤
Toya I am CHEERING YOU ON! Mad props to you for giving this a shot, she came out great! So happy for you! Repainting a doll can be a really nerve wracking experience, and I say that as someone who's been doing it since 2018. XD That was a huge step you took, and you did great! Hope you continue to have fun if you ever choose to pick this up again! Admittedly, I've found it easier to work on bigger dolls with more prominent molds. G3 of Monster High has been really nice for that reason, but I think the doll I had the easiest time getting even was Gooliope Jellington, she was just the balance I needed. It also helps to embrace the asymmetry a little. Side glancing dolls, smirks, dolls with more varied expressions in their eyebrows, they're some of my ways of hiding that I struggle with symmetry, but also, they're a lot more fun for me than a face that's just the standard "look straight and smile". Never be afraid to experiment to find what you like!
Ollie’s has these dolls and a purple one piece outfit in their stores. Dolls are $3.99 and the outfit is $1.99. The dolls were from series one, I believe. They came in around Christmas but there are still dolls and the outfit available in my local Ollie’s. I enjoyed your tutorial. Most people do not have perfect features. Their left and right sides are a little off from each other so it will be okay if your doll does too.
Hi Toya!! I remember watching your old repaints videos as a child! I do repaints and I have some tips I use for u if u would like to use them ❤ 1. I use watercolors, yes! Watercolors, the only secret is to have "Mr super clear" that leaves a perfect Canva to paint, also watercolors are easy to remove. I also used Mr super clear to make my barbie doll's makeup matte and Not shiny as Mattel likes to make 😅 When I finished I apply a tiny layer of Mr super clear and that holds the makeup! Greetings from Guadalajara Jalisco Mexico ❤
omg she turned out amazing! you're repaint definitely changed her vibe and character! hope we see more Toya doll repaints!
My favorite doll artist commenting on my favorite doll channel ❤
Oh MY!!!!! 🥰 this means so much ❤❤❤❤

From a fellow doll collector/ customiser, you did her face beautifully!
I still remember watching you paint on Sophie or chloes lips in a video, and just seeing this made feel like I'm a kid again. You are my childhood and I live your videos so much 🫶🏼🫶🏼
I remember!

you still did fantastic! she came out beautifully 💖💖
can i still sketch the face using water color pencil without using msc?
I repainted my Ken Fashionista 163 into Trevor Noah, and he turned out awesome. Thanks for the custom Comedian inspired doll idea Toya.
Do you have an instagram where we can see him?!?! That’s so awesome!!
Hi Bestie Justin!!!!! 💖✨✨
Your enthusiasm & honesty comes through in every video. I'm relatively new to your channel but have found you to be the most helpful in giving alternative ways of doing crafts. Thank you for being you.
Something that always helps me with keeping the eyes symmetrical is holding the doll upside down! It's like flipping the canvas with digital art :D
She looks gorgeous!! Amazing job on both dolls!!
Yes!!!!! Am so so glad you are doing this! Doll repainting is so VERY rewarding!! I love repainting as well! So relaxing!!! You did GREAT!!!
Way to step out of your comfort zone!! Thank you for showing us the twist. I love Mini-Toya doing push-ups, so cute!
You did a fabulous job on that doll.. I personally like the little quirks to it.. Makes it even more the unique
Your dark lip color looks so much nicer than stark bright pink usually seen on darker skin tones! I also think the smaller eyes are more realistic, too! You did an amazing job on the repaints! Be very proud. You earned it. 🎉❤
I wish more dolls looked like this. She looks great
Toya, you are so brave to attempt wiping doll eyes clean and starting them all over again. You did an excellent job. Be very proud of yourself!❤
You did such an amazing job! Also don't get too hung up on the symmetry, because if its not major eye wonk I think it adds a nice touch of realism because of everyones asymetrical faces 😊
We love you froggy, thank you for making our childhoods so much fun 🥹❤️
She looks so much better! 👏😍 I always knew you could do it! If you practice you could do a full repaint! 👏👏👏
Wow your new doll repaint is so beautiful and I love your videos ❤🎉
The lip color combo came out gorgeous , you did a great job Toya !!!😃😃
The repaint looks amazing 🎉 hope to see more of your repaint makeovers 🐸❤
Jennifer Hudson! You made Dayna look just like Jennifer Hudson 😊
Love the eyeliner trick!! It is really helpful 😊 The new lip color looks phenomenal!! And for this being your first repaint, it turned out really well (I can definitely relate to the struggling with symmetry)
We love you for going for it! One day I too will be brave.
She looks great!
This is the beginning! watch out in a few years when Toya does some amazing professional repaints all the time ❤
You did a great job! Thinking about doing a repaint sets my teeth on edge!
Toyota,
I knew you'd do a beautiful job! I totally understand the nervousness though. Removing factory paint is such a permanent thing to do.

Great job! IMO unless I knew you repainted them, I wouldn’t know any different! Bravo! 👏🏼
Amazing attempt! I don't think I could do better than that for a first attempt!
I have been watching @PoppenAtelier and drooling over her work.
Now you've added this to your repertoire...unstoppable!
You give me another extra push to try this myself!
She looks so good! This definitely inspired me to not be scared to repaint some on mine
Awesome work! It has been amazing watching your skills develop and evolve over the years.
That doll looks stunning now 🎉

Great job!! Encouraging to want to try someday.

I just wish I had the talent to do this!! I’ll say it again.. you are an artist. (I’m just a crafty non artist.) 😊

I'm proud of you Toya for trying something new! The dolls look absolutely fabulous!
She is so pretty!
😮I was holding my breath the whole time. But she turned out really pretty ❤😊I love how their hair turned out too ❤😊🤩
