Recapped mine, swopped the diodes out for fast recovery and changed the op amps for mc33079 and left the functions and vca. The problem is on that diy page "they" all hate the sound of Dirty Gerty, the whole idea was to make the compressor more transparent removing the artefacts it is know fore !!! just chucking Panasonic fr/fc/fm electrolytics cleans out some of the mud in most Alesis gear. cool vids
Thanks! Great input!
Would you say that doing what you did to yours would retain its character?
@@Hauteclaire16 yes I wanted to keep the pumping artefact, but improve the audio path :)
@@zzkjbry awesome!
what diodes did you use? Should I put panasonic electrolytics?
@@Hauteclaire16 Fast recovery diodes UF4004 ( www.mouser.co.uk/ProductDetail/ON-Semiconductor-Fairchild/UF4004/?qs=NwIfwa72FloQk4799NE06w%3D%3D ), Panasonic series FC are great in your power section, FR or FC for your signal path, or you could use FM in the signal path. I also swopped out the other caps (non electrolytic) for better quality equivalents.
Yay, got it right!
I still dig the quirkiness of the Alesis 3630 though. I'd use it more for the effect, to get that particular sound.
Congrats! That' the way to go...
ffs your voice and cadence is so charismatic
i know i'm a simp at this point but i love your content and delivery so much
Thanks! Happy to hear that
Speaks for the engineer's mastering skills. B was my preference, too like I said in the comments. I was just hoping for this to be the 3630 as the result of a kind of miraculous mod. I should have known though... ;)
Yeah, totally appreciate his work. He really nailed that style.
Der Kanal überrascht mich immer wieder. 👍🏻
Vielen herzlichen Dank!!!
Your soldering skills are impressive, I personnaly never soldered or de-soldered an IC, I can just do basic repairs, like changing a capacitor or re-soldering a cable or something ;
Do you have any advice ? What's your soldering iron ? I feel mine is probably too cheap, litterally bad gear !
I personally suck at soldering, therefore I'm working with Raimund every time I need someone with advanced soldering skills
@@AudioPilz aha ok it seems we both have a skilled engineer friend who can do the complexe mods for us XD
Its said that the 3632 is the same but minus the distortion issues... I have never heard an a/b comparison though, that would be interesting. I have my doubts that it sounds the same though!
Good to know. Never tried the 3632
3632 is totally different to the 3630 or nano compressor, although it is kinda dark like nano
very much usable in a mixing sense but most tools arent speced for mastering which requires the best of the best components.
Agreed! Mastering gear eats through your bank account quickly
I love this channel lol
Thank you!
I knew it! Great vid
THX and thanks for voting!
Do you recommend disabling the gates on the alesis? I heard you can just ship 2 wires…. Worth it?
I think the 3630 should be appreciated with all its flaws
@@AudioPilz it’s always been good to me! Just lightly kiss the threshold
Hey there! First thanks for the videos about it. Very informative.
Question: Mine puts some sort of a hi frequency crackle/noise on top of the Bassdrum or sh101 base. I am curious if that's normal cause its crap or bc it needs service,..
Thanks! Hard to tell, could be an underpowered wallwart or the gate...
@@AudioPilz The Power supply is the original one and the gate is note used,.. :/
anyways thanks a lot!
@@cutterstrophal the original power supply is SERIOUSLY underpowered and the gate is always in the signal chain, btw ;)
Oh, thank goodness... I was correct. Ha, suck that age-related hearing loss!
Oh, just posted the result vid under your other comment! Stick around
From the first comparison the original 3630 sounds way better. The mod makes it loose it’s warm colored charm
True that!
Interesting what chip did you use? THAT 2180 a,b or c? and did you use opa1679? for uppgrading the old tl074? (i think mine had 84 in them)
Good question, I have to look that up
Welp, I'm happy to know I could clearly tell which one was the compressor. But I'm less happy to realize that I somehow actually prefer that sound, lmao. My ears are probably too used to crappy compressed EDM.
It is fascinating how listening behaviour changes
Is it bad that I like the non modded version?
Same here, that thing is seriously over-modded😅
tbh the original one sounded more characteristic.
Thanks for posting!
you're trying to get "French housewives" from the compressor?? ;)
The reason so many people own one
It’s “vibes”.
Blame the thick accent.
is that all that modding does? the difference was obvious. but who would release the machine without the natural presence and resonant depth? seems the unit should have been this capable stock from the box. WHAT ARE WE HERE FOR PEOPLE? WE ARE HERE TO HEAR!! polyphonic amen??!?
The modding material was much more expensive than the compressor;)
Can we still buy these mod DIY kits any where?
It's just about ordering the right parts, they're readily available
oops only just watched part 1
Sorry for spoiling😬
There's software that sounds much better than both of those now either way.
That's most definitively true
Aber Software ist fad.
original sound is MUCH better and MUCH more charismatic
Agreed!!!
