A couple things should be noted:
First: The reason why M.2 NVME SSDs are so fast isn’t because it plugs directly into the motherboard, it is because it runs off of a different interface to HDD and SATA SSDs called PCI-Express. It works by connecting the SSD directly to the processor instead of going through SATA controllers, it also has more wires for transferring data than SATA does. This mode of transferring data is what your graphics card uses.
If your motherboard doesn’t have an M.2 drive connector you can get a PCI-Express card, this plugs into a PCI-Express slot on your motherboard, and the M.2 NVME Drive connects to that card. With this you will see very little speed loss if any at all.
Second, not all M.2 NVME SSDs require a heat sink, some of them simply do not run fast enough to need one. The only ones in need of a heat sink are some of the fastest ones. Though I would still recommend getting a heat sink, they just aren’t necessary.

    • @Nobbi_Habogs
      @Nobbi_Habogs ปีที่แล้ว +27

PCI Express isnt the protocol, its the interface. NVMe is the protocol. There are also SSDs using the M.2 form factor, but are SATA SSDs. So there are M.2 SATA and M.2 NVMe SSDs.

Technically SATA actually uses PCIe as its interface with the CPU, just goes through a controller to interface with the drive.
SATA uses less lanes then NVME, which is why motherboards often have to disable SATA ports 0 and 1 if NVME is being used.
This is also why Sata controllers can be found on little PCIe expansion cards, and as @rapst0r mentioned that m.2 drives can use SATA.

One heat sink is present on the motherboard for ssd already. There is also another slot for nvme m.2 ssds nowadays but there isn't a heatsink pre provided in the motherboard. You'd have to get one. I watched someone installing an ssd in thst slot but the slot was near to the gpu slot. And when putting a big gpu, the there wasn't much of a space to put a heatsink unless there are some thin ones available in the market which I am not aware of. Are there any available? And btw if chose to not go with a heatsink on the second drive then should install the windows in the one with the hestsink or in the one without the heatsink?

List of things wrong with this video.
-"NVMe Drive" is not a thing, they're Solid State Drives that use the Non-Volitile Memory Express transfer protocol, best term would be NVMe SSD.
-The drive you called an SSD is a SATA SSD, it uses the same interface and transfer protocol as the mechanical hard drive
-SATA never hits 600mb/s because of protocol overhead and no SATA SSD advertises a 600MB/s transfer speed, same reason why USB 3.0 Gen 2 doesn't hit 1200MB/s (it's theoretical maximum)
-Internal SATA drives usually have better performance than external drives because they have far less access latency. No matter how high that transfer speed number is, USB drives will always have more access latency.
-NVMe SSDs also have multiple different standards and only a few can actually hit 7GB/s. Most also don't require a heatsink unless you're CONSTANTLY writing data to them.
-NVMe SSDs are not faster because they attach directly to your motherboard. U.2 connections allow the use of 2.5" NVMe SSDs with a cable or backplane, this is what NVMe storage servers use.

Thanks for your response. The intent of the video was to appeal to the average person who doesn't even know what an NVME SSD is. It's simply not possible to get this nuanced in a 30 second video.
Hopefully people that need to know more will do their research, or reference a comment like yours!
For a 30s video you have to keep things overly simple or else no one will even bother to watch it.

      @inqizzo 2 ปีที่แล้ว +16

Yea, heatsinks on everything now are just for the looks, drives mostly take few seconds of load and than a long period of idle, thats why the things reviewers say about drive speeds are not important, because you will only stress an ssd for a few seconds if you are transfering a file under a gigabyte, and in you are reading game files while joining a match in a game, you are only reading a small ammount of the game overall size.
For gaming an nvme drive is a nice to have for a boot drive so your system can just boot faster, but for mass storage drives? An ssd is sometimes even overkill for a game storage drive, and you can get more gigs per $ in you use a hdd with optane (it has some drawbacks too, you will need to spare an m.2 slot for it, it only speeds up loading of commonly used files so if you play a diffrent game every day it will do nothing, and you can only use it on an intel system)

NVMEs have been around for quite a while. Like a good 5,6 years while. Gen 5s are coming out in the upcoming months and atm you can get gen 4 or gen 3, obviously the higher you go the faster they go, in gaming or booting up your system you won't really notice any difference tho, it's in the file transfers, content creation or work related tasks are where faster NVMEs shine. Basically if you're Joe Schmo you don't need a gen 4 or 5 and can do just fine with a trusted gen 3 drive, for example Intel 660,670, Samsung 970 Evo (they are more of the higher end gen 3s but because they're 3 years old they get cheaper with time and on bargain sales)

    2TB hard drive - correct
    2TB SSD - correct
    2TB NVMe - not correct
The third one is also an SSD, just like the second one. The difference is that it uses the M.2 form factor. An M.2 form factor SSD may use the NVMe protocol or it could use the SATA protocol. But either way, it’s still an SSD.

As a power user, there is a reason why NVMe drives cost so much more. If you need one, you know you need one and you'll pay for it. If you don't need one, you'll see the price tag, and you won't buy it. Very simple.

    • @Trippsy05

The thing is, I can't think of anyone who really uses a PC who couldn't utilize one. Currently, I'm building a machine for a family member, and it would be a waste not to put an nvme drive in it. NVMe SSD come in 4 form factors the second that he showed was a 2.5 NVMe sometimes used in a mounting bracket at the back of the PC or elsewhere. The M.2 form factor is the last one he showed used in modern gaming computers which is directly used on the motherboard. Both of the NVMes he showed usually end up having higher write/read speeds than your average HDD and the M.2 can benefit from a heatsink but it's not required to use one.

well obviously in electronic if something is smaller its highly likely its also faster. idk how that size to speed comparison relevant, but that size to storage capacity tho. now thats actually crazy

Oh man, missed the opotunity of say "and THIS, is a 2tb sd card"

Overall pretty good video. I'd just like to add, that nvme ssds are faster than sata ssds because they transfer data through the pci lanes of your motherboard which are rated for a way higher speed than the sata lanes. Often those pci lanes will be connected to your cpu directly but even if they are connected to your chipset it propably wont affect the speed of the drive and if at all will only impact the latency.

I know many have pointed this out already but to clarify once more:
Both the SSD and the "NVME Drive" are SSDs.
The sata SSD is a 2.5" form factor ssd that uses a sata interface.
The "NVMe Drive" is a m.2 2280 form factor ssd that uses the m.2 interface to connect and uses NVMe as the storage protocol.
There are different interfaces/form factors that also use NVMe drives (there are for example 2.5" form factor NVMe drives). There are also m.2 drives that use the SATA protocol for data transfer instead of NVMe.
The interface/protocol of the dove is a big factor in the speed but a cheap NVMe ssd (e.g. without a dram cache) might not perform much better than a well built SATA SSD.

Nvme= non volatile memory express. But keep in mind, nvme m2 and u2 or u3 use to increase their temperature during use.
