  • With the mega-hit Devilman: Crybaby putting his name in the greater collective consciousness of anime fans, lets talk about Masaaki Yuasa's fantastic 2017 film, The Night is Short, Walk on Girl.
    Twitter: / wordsmaybe
    MAL: myanimelist.ne...
    Tunes: The opening and closing tracks are "Undertale" and "His Theme" from the very good game...Undertale.
    Track two is "Heal" from the also very good Ico.
    Track three is "Sounds from the Future" off of the lovely bartending sim VA-11 HALL-A.
    Track four is an instrumental version of "Youkoso! Hitori Bocchi" from one of my favorite anime, Welcome to the NHK.

    Not trying to be a contrarian but I personally see Don Underpants story as questioning what romance really means. He didn’t fall in love with the apple girl, he fell in love with the fact that apples bounced off there heads, he didn’t fall in love with the prop director, he fell in love with the fact that koi bounced off there heads. Senpai is the same way in the sense that for the whole movie he is trying to create a “romantic occurrence” that will make Otome fall in love with him, when in reality all he needs to do is ask her out for coffee and used books.

    • @RubenDelight
      @RubenDelight 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Me replying to a 2 year old comment.. but just watched the film. I think your theory about Don Underpants is half there. He staked his whole being on this “chance” and counter. Once then confronted with the truth, she was just his cross dressing friend, and yet the director had truly fallen for him. He was initially not willing to let go of his commitment to fate, but didn’t truly want to commit to his friend either, hence his hesitancy in kissing him. And at that moment the koi hitting their heads simultaneously gave him an excuse to give someone who truly liked him a chance.
      In other words, I believe the director love was real, it just took another stroke of chance to admit it to himself.

  • @ZeroZmm
    @ZeroZmm 6 ปีที่แล้ว +102

    If the apples are a reference to the legend of the laws of gravity, then Don Underpants's crush is probably a reference to Einstein; "Gravity will not be responsible for 2 people falling in love"

      I cannot understand how people can praise something that gives them a sense of false hope. There’s one scene in this film that hits me very hard, where we observe senpai’s thoughts and feelings visualized in a courtroom. I’ve been struggling with depression ever since this pandemic hit and I’ve undergone a number of breakups; few as they were affected me severely. Whereas senpai manages to win her heart in one night, I attempted to cut my arm purposefully a few nights ago because that’s how hopeless I feel the situation to be. Sometimes I still feel that way, and I turn to alcohol to drown out my loneliness. All I want in the end is someone I can cherish, hold close, and share this life of mine with, explore the great outdoors and settle down in a small log cabin in the Rocky Mountains to raise a family. But sometimes I feel like I’m asking too much.
      The film said, “Waiting hurts, and being waited upon hurts. But those who are alone must act.” I’ve tried many times only to have my heartbroken. I’ve lost how many girls I’ve given my number to in College. Senpai has no fucking clue how lucky he is. All the shenanigans, the magic moments, the confessions, they’re bullshit, unreal. They’ll never happen to me. Sometimes I feel like my heart is so broken, it’ll implode.
      I need help.

    I just saw this outstanding film today & watching this review noticed something I hadn't among all the neat chaos. At 9:27 look at the princess outfit Otome wears; specifically the top. It has to be an intentional nod to the late writer/director Satoshi Kon (Perfect Blue, Paprika), as it looks exactly like the pink cartoon dog from Kon's series "Paranoia Agent." I don't know if this is a known thing, but it's so great to see Masaaki Yuasa paying tribute to another surreal genius in anime.
    RIP Satoshi Kon!!

    Worth mentioning for anyone who may see this that there are a lot of subtle nods to the Tatami Galaxy in this movie. The majority of the characters in this movie debuted in the Tatami Galaxy, so it seems like they throw some cool nods to that, i.e. breast rock climbing wall

      Thank you. I really do try to put myself into my work. I feel it's the best way to create empathy and I know that if I were the people working on the anime I talk about, I'd want viewers to come away with some sort of emotional connection. If my videos can then build a bridge from the those creators to my viewers, then I've done my job. Again, thank you. Really do appreciate the positive feedback.

You seem to be struggling with depression in a bad way and I get how hard that can be. I may be just a stranger, but I do hope you feel better about yourself. You deserve to be happy, no matter how hard that may seem to be.

    First of all, great review/analysis, and second of all, when I heard the last song I thought "Isn't that from Welcome to NHK?", paused the video and went to check your description and saw that I was right! I like how you tied the song in! Kind of made me nostalgic; also happy to see other fans of NHK (one of my top animes of all time and the soundtrack is great too) out there. This movie also made me think of TOP's "Blurryface" album, especially the scene where senpai's inner thoughts are shown as a bunch of "shadowy senpais" in his head representing doubts, insecurities, lack of confidence, primal instincts or the idea of "blurryface" (the side of us that slows us down, makes us do the wrong thing, or keeps us back). I feel like these lines from "Stressed Out" fit this senpais character perfectly:
    "I was told when I get older all my fears would shrink
    But now I’m insecure and I care what people think"
    Thank you and keep making great videos!

How Ozu says all booksare connected just stays with me for such a long time.

      If you can keep up with the subtitles lololol. Right off the bat you’re desperately trying to keep up with the rapid fire narration.
      Also, this film acts as a finale to that series but anyone could easily watch and enjoy this film without having ever heard of the show, the mark of a truly great film that takes place in a larger cinematic universe.
