Gary I switched to castle tees about a year ago. Reason I tee the ball a consistent height all the time, it just takes one variable out of the equation for every driver shot! After watching your fitting video with Sam I’ve experimented with loft, ball positioning and tee height. I tried moving the ball forward In my stance with my left foot at about 45° the ball now sits just forward of my left heel on a yellow castle tee my standard driver loft is 10.5° and my bad miss is right! This was making me hit high hard draws to hooks so then I put my loft down to -1° at 9.5° this would normally make me loose it way right but with the ball position and tee the same I lost the hookie ones and started getting high straight flights and if I hover the club at address and position the club 2 club heads back from the ball I get a lovely high straight to a baby drawing flight. My distance went up and I’m getting 280 + yds now. I’ll just add I’m 68 in may so not a spring chicken anymore but still play of low single figures and can still get it round in a few over par and if the stars all align under par at times when my back isn’t giving me Gyip!!
This is excellent. Always been a pink height castle tee and didn’t fully appreciate the higher tee could get me more distance. A tee is a lot cheaper than a new driver for distance.
Honestly, I’ve never considered it, the vlog was more to show what happens to trajectory. I may have even guessed that orange wouldn’t have gone as far due to more launch / more spin, but it didn’t spin anymore, and that’s why it’s gone further.
Yup. Absolutely agree with the findings as that is true for me too. Instead of trying to fit the swing to a universal tee height, why not fit the tee height to your swing. We shouldn't follow the pro's tee height (usually lower) but look at what works for us.
It won't help you get more distance if you don't change your swing to do so. This is why teeing up or down can be counter-productive. The real key to good golf is to understand why the ball flies as it does, and once you get that down you can improve your swing scientifically. But golf clearly exposes the fact that taking players out of their comfort zone will make their play worse until they adjust to the new configuration. The pros rarely exceed the cons until the player accepts the limitations of their previous setup and begins to explore the possibilities of the new setup. Of course once they begin to make positive progress they are bound to learn something that can make their old setup work better. The main thing is that there are many ways to play golf well and some are better suited to certain situations than others. You're going to take more than 60 strokes per round. How many more? That depends on how well you played the first 60.
Great video gaz. But i have a different point of view, i was using the pink when i was gaming a pxg gen2 driver i later upgraded to a cobra ltdx max and had to move to the white tee because i was consistently skying the ball because the driver face is shallower. Since i changed i started to find the center of the club more often.
You might also experiment with ball position in your stance. have found that I hit it farther if I have the ball slightly inside my forward foot rather that way forward off my left heel..
I’ve used the orange castle tees for a couple of years. I do hit the ball very high but at soon to be 63, height equals distance unless it’s wind straight into the face. I use a Rogue ST LS driver and I think the higher you hit up the face the less spin you get, so tee em guys and let em fly. I use shotscope watch to collect stats and I’m getting 251 yds during winter in Kentucky playing 10x the last month in mostly 40° F weather.
I'm 71 in two weeks. Using graduated tees and still getting 240-250 yards on a good day, with a good ball. I use Taylormade M6 10.5° driver Regular shaft
I use a variety of castle tees. Pink for normal drives, white for drives into the wind. Blue for fairway woods, red for hybrids and green for irons. I switched from plastic to bamboo for ecological reasons with no loss of performance. I love the consistency they bring, and whollly endorse the need to trial them to decide which one's best for you
It might sound crazy this, but I think the colour and material of the bamboo tees ad a-bit of quality to teeing it up. Feels and looks a-lot more premium than plastic. I’m slowly converting to graduated tees myself, I’ve just got a load of 2 3/4 to use to first.
@@garymartingolf I was a firm believer in wooden tees when I used standard tees. They seemed to offer less resistance when I hit the ball. Bamboo seems similar in this respect, but I might just be some crazy old guy 😄😄
I went up from pink to orange last year, and I noticed that my shots were straighter and less prone to slice/fade etc. It's the same effect as when you try hit a three wood off the fairway, as opposed to off a tee. You'll hit it better off a tee.
I did a similar test with the wooden tees ( yellow line ) and the wooden ( blue tees ) and ur very similar to me I was struggling to get enough launch . My results were better launch and distance but I struggled to keep the ball in play, especially in the summer with firm fairways so I have ended up back with the wooden yellow not as far but hitting more fairways
I would love to see a test where you switched them on a shot-by-shot basis randomly. The fact that you used Orange last might have been affecting your swing, in that you were much warmer and looser. I know for me, my range sessions always improve as I go. My early shots are never as fluid or powerful. Thanks for the video though, well done and makes my very intrigued to try out a taller tee myself!
The one thing I find odd about this is why the 3 different length tees? Many companies produce the longer tees with stripes on them so you just push them further in the ground to “tee it down”. And they are easy to see what level you put them at.
I use orange castle tees for my driver and blue/purple castle tees for anything else. I hit my drives better with the orange tee than a regular tee. The castle tees are also easy to put in the ground. I highly recommend them. Looking forward to the switch when you play James next time.
Tee snob! Hahaha! Love the term. I will certainly try to go a little higher to see what happens.Good test that we all should do to see what works for us.
I’ve since found a wooden tee that has an orange, pink and red line on.I’ve started using them now. I’ll share them soon. I’ve forgot what the brand was.
Very interesting. The orange tees scare me so I usually play safe with pink. But needing distance due to limited hip mobility, I might have to take the plunge.
More great content Gary, This might sound strange, but just test the orange castle again, but this time actually try to hit up on the ball, check dynamic loft and launch and you might well get another few yards out of it with say swinging 3* up angle of attack! Its sometimes easier to not change anything static in a swing and just ask yourself to "do" something else.
I gave up golf for 20 years, and when I came back, the first two things I noticed is how big drivers have become, and how much longer the tees are. I have gotten used to big heads on drivers, mostly, though, though they still seem a bit odd when I hit them off the deck. However, as for the tees, when I have tried hitting off a tall tee, I always go under the ball. It just seems to introduce another way to mis-hit the ball.
This is so interesting to me. Your efficiency is fantastic and that just shows that you don’t need to swing harder but smarter. I always look at my efficiency numbers. My speed is lesser but I get everything I can out of what I’ve got :) I will be trying this tee test as well
Yup. More carry, less roll. But you need to move the orange tee further ahead in your setup. You'll then get a positive attack angle, slightly less backspin, and 5 more yards of carry.
Gary, Shawn Clement has videos about hitting the ball on the upswing with your driver, increasing distance by as much as 30 yards. Moe Norman talked about setting up as if the ball is in the center of your stance for drives.
I changed to orange tee height about 18 months ago for standard tee shots. I still vary tee height if I need to hit a certain shape. If I tee it lower I feel it removes the left half of the golf course.
@Gary, interesting results. Have you tried setting up your club about a club width back with the orange Tees. I think that have the starting position of your club, back from the tee, you will gain significant distance. I’d love to see you test that and the results to get. Great video.
I was really surprised your attack angle was down with a pink tee. Definitely orange is best for you, but everyone needs to get in a simulator and do this test for themselves if 20 yards is at stake! Great video Gaz.
I always used a pink tee because everyone i played with used them, then i randomly decided to try an orange tee and my strike/distances and dispersion all improved
Ironically, had a lesson yesterday, on a simulator so used a pre set pink tee, immediately advised to tee it higher, eureka moment, 25 yards increase in distance. So now have to convince myself to trust it on the course.
Had fitting recently for a stealth 2 plus hitting ball of white castle like always with old driver. Distance was good, launch was what they wanted but spin was much too high over 3000. This was due to negative attack angle. Moved to pink castle as the suggested to try and get positive attack angle which brought spin down to desired level. Been out on course when possible trying to get used to higher tee, difficult after many years of teeing it low but i will get there. Your spin has reduced because you angle of attack is almost neutral of orange tee. So higher tee should reduce spin but increase launch.
I use my pinky finger to set my tee height consistently. I don't see the necessity to spend extra to buy Castle tees. I use the ball to stick my tee into the ground, then I stick the tip of my pinky into the ground next to my tree, and adjust the tee to be the same height as the crease behind my large knuckle on my pinkie. It works for me, and I always have the same height for my tee. Now, if I could only swing consistently, I would be a better driver.
I was using an orange tee up until this week when I was advised to drop to pink, I will have to go to an indoor range and check whether I should go back to the orange tee. Thanks for the test.
Tried all 3 and use pink currently, white can be usable in some high winds / narrow fairways, could not hit orange consistently earlier, but will give it another go.
I think I’ll probably need some more time before I’m fully converted too. My only worry is if I’m lazy and forget to hit up, could be a costly mistake 😂
I went for a driver fitting with Sam and my current shaft suited me as good as anything I tried but one this he suggested that made a big difference to get the flight I wanted was change from pink tee to white tee and it has worked for me out on the course, I don’t think I have lost any distance but definitely got the flight I wanted
I'm a fan of higher tees to get more distance, and I hear a lot of chatter from my playing partners about it. However, the reason why I would use a shorter tee would be to flight the ball down or playing on uneven tee boxes when ball gets higher than my feet, to avoid a hook.
How do you get a smash factor/ efficiency of 1.55 unless you have an illegal driver? And how is the ball spin rate nearly identical given dramatic difference in attack angle? Maybe your launch monitor has some issues?
I’ve just jumped on to the orange castle tees after trying the big orange runner tees at the range. I’ve got better launch angle, distance is good, and helps me catch the middle more as my swing bottoms out more after it jsut gives me more confidnece so great to see this content today gaz keep it coming fella 👍
I've tried just about everything. I can't imagine using just the one tee height for every driver shot. In fact, I routinely play in 2-3 club wind conditions. So downwind its a high tee, into, a shorter one. With the higher tee, you just need to make sure your low point is well behind the ball (to avoid skying it). So I setup with the clubhead 4 or 5 " behind the ball. The real danger I find with actively chasing hitting up on the driver is, it tends to leak into my iron play as well. And that ain't good.
Great content again Gaz. Not sure what the Castle tees are (and the various colours). In Australia I use a blue tee (65mm) to drive off. Everything else is a broken tee that I’ve picked up. The point is that I’ve used a blue tee for my driver so long that, when someone hands me a standard wooden tee, I have absolutely no idea how high to tee it up. Long live step tees - and keep up the good work on your channel.
@garymartingolf yea im just getting to the point where im low on tees so wilo just use those for the odd teed up wood shot or iron on a par 3 kinda thing
Awesome experiment Gaz and just recently I went to the oink castle tee just to get a consistent tee height, I will try the orange tee on Sunday mate on the range before I play
I used to use orange castle tees but the started hitting really high of the face with the G430 driver. That head is quite shallow compared to other drivers. had to drop down to pink
Has nothing to do with tee height but just with you hit more up on the ball because it is higher on the tee. If you use the pink or white tee and try to hit up and has a launch angle of +-14 degrees it will go even further. The only difficult will be that a lower tee will be hit lower on the club face which results in -2 degrees of launch so you will launch it lower again. If you hit center face on white of a 9° driver and hit 4° up it will have the same result ;-)
Tee height is a touchy thing for me. It I want a left tendency I tee higher and it flies higher. Farther because I also get 1-2 MPH faster. I'll place driver head a ball farther back at the start. Helps to make sure you swing up on it.
Gaz, if you still want to be a tee snob, then use normal white tee's with the height marked on them. Some days, you might want to drive it lower so it's easier to lower the tee and keep the ball flight down. Great videos keep uo the good work. 👍
I would love to see a video of all types of tees vs each other. I’ve always felt like those castle tees impede the club because of that thick stem I know that it’s probably so minimal but it’s a perception thing for me
I have used castle tees for years. It was always pink till I found a tall grey one. The problem with grey is that they are easily lost. Orange was the solution. I sometimes sky one off the top edge but that is down to my cr@p swing. Cheers Gary.
Interesting stuff Gary, thanks. But I’m worried you were reacting to the tee height quite a bit so for me the results are interesting but inconclusive. Wouldn’t you need to have consistent swing speed, launch angle, and consistency of strike to make comparisons on tee height? For me this experiment is to test how the ball performs when struck on different areas of the club face. Spin and distance should change.
How I reacted to each tee was how I felt that I needed to react to strike the ball out of the centre of the club face. How the tee makes you / me react is the whole point in the video. Changing tee encourages different angles of attack, and you’ve got to test the tee heights to find out which one gives you the best numbers. The data found is only relevant to me.
I love castle tees for making it easy to always have the same height, but I have never found a castle 2 1/2" (i.e., between pink and orange). It would make sense - the whites are only 1/4" from the pinks, the next up (orange) should be 1/4" higher than pinks but they are a full 1/2". This might alleviate some of the understandable concern about skying the ball with the orange, which I have done.
With all the hard ground I try and push my tees into I got simulator rubber tees one for drivers and one for par 3 s . I linked them together with a string.
I dither between pink and silver, silver being similar to orange at 70mm apparently but do tend to stick with pink. I’ve just changed over to a low spin hazrdus shaft so might have a play with the higher tee now and see what the difference is.
Very interesting outputs - if you were doing your driver fitting and the 3 drivers you were testing say Ping(white), Callaway(Pink) & Titleist(Orange) you would definitely choose Titleist. Feel free to use 3 other brands as not relevant if it was a true blind test and quite frankly there would not be that large gain as other test have shown between the big manufacturers.. So is the moral of the story is experiment with tee hight to get the best gain and safe over £600+😃
I use a tee with lines marked, I always tee it at 2 1/2 inches, but in winter on the mats I use a pink 2 1/4 inch castle tee. I can see the difference in ball flight and distance as soon as I had to use the pink tees off the mats. Lower and shorter with less carry distance. Orange off the mats and it's sky hook territory 😂
@@garymartingolfswing the same as you do with the tall tee. Just lower the tee and move the ball back in the stance. You can swing the exact same and get a lower launch without changing mechanics
I bought some tees from Telos. They're a plastic tee with a ring that allows for adjustable height. They're $10 US for 3. I've had them for a year and only used 1 so far.
Gary, Ive been on about this to my playing partners for years, the 2 longest hitters in my group (by a lot) all use 9 degree drivers with orange castle tees!
I learned from watching Trottie's Taylormade fitting videos that lower loft will create better transfer of energy. I think that is why long drivers will tee it very high.
It would be interesting to see data that reflects numbers with the yardages and what the probability/degree of off center strikes is … do they increase with a higher tee height? Personally, yes I see increased yardage with it tee’d UP but; resultant of my inconsistent delivery, I also get penalized more often with mishits (high and low on the face).
I use the pink tee, when I try orange it works for a week or two then I get lazy and end up skying a few. Also with orange I need to move the ball further forward and start hitting big left pulls (although then feel great.) Also, I've never seen anyone with a smash factor over 1.5 on a gc quad or a 160mph ball speed with 103 clubhead speed, that is impressive efficiency.
I'd like to see a test of different tee cup sizes. Some tees have quite a small shallow cup to rest the ball on where others have a much larger cup with a soft rubber rim. Does it make a difference? I suspect the smaller there better, but I do not know that
You need to peg it up to encourage a positive angle of attack.... I commented this to you a long time ago. Strike is King for spin rates... 2100 rpm is a great number to have at 100 to 105mph.
Gary this has been an ongoing question in my head for quite a while. My only problem with teeing high is sometimes get a sky shot. thank you for taking the time to download, great content.
I totally understand! That’s why I’ve always feared going higher! I’m still wary, as I’m not hitting up enough yet, but the numbers are certainly more positive! Try setup so you can hit up more with orange!
Solid content. Just a couple of production thoughts - Panel light is too bright or too close to you when talking to the camera or it needs more red. Also place connectors every other hole across the top to get rid of those sags in the screen. Rock on.
Hit flat with 9deg launch angle. +10mph swing = approx +24yrd. The tall tee n yardage came from a better launch angle. Try a higher loft with the short tee
I would have liked to see you go back around again and hit the pink and white tees again. I believe your swing speed increased as you loosened up ? Just a thought. Regardless though great video as always ! Thank you !
Nice mate!! I'm trying to build one as you do. I have a garage space, 10ft ceiling tall. Is this your sim room, a 4K laser model? What would you suggest while picking the components? Appreciate your input.
Dear Gary I use tee my son borough from the u.s.a.called martini tees which have bigger head so easier to put the ball on right sizes for the ball really like them not sure if you can buy the.m in Britain
Gaz having watched your videos since the beginning, your last few months have been a great quality. Keep it up pal you're smashing it at the moment.

It works for me, and I always have the same height for my tee. Now, if I could only swing consistently, I would be a better driver.
I was using an orange tee up until this week when I was advised to drop to pink, I will have to go to an indoor range and check whether I should go back to the orange tee. Thanks for the test.
Great that Gary, I use a pink castle tee, but I'll definitely try the orange after seeing your results....A test with different balls would be good 👍
I’m 50 and castle tees were definitely around when I was a nipper. Really enjoy your content pal 👍🏻👍🏻
I did think this during the edit! Glad you pointed it out. I think it must of just been the club I was at didn’t sell them lol 😂
I use a high tee but I set my driver about club head back and catch the ball great great video gas keep the coming
@@garymartingolf Ha ha, that's my fear also😄
I went for a driver fitting with Sam and my current shaft suited me as good as anything I tried but one this he suggested that made a big difference to get the flight I wanted was change from pink tee to white tee and it has worked for me out on the course, I don’t think I have lost any distance but definitely got the flight I wanted
That’s great! I could even be a good test to repeat with irons.
A mate of mine uses an orange castle tee, he absolutely bombs it, regularly hits 300 yards.
Here in the U.S, 3 1/4” tee height is very popular. I use the 31/4”, 4 Yards More tee.
Really! Thats Crazy! I’ve got to try this as a short video lol 😂 😄
Cheers Craig. I think it’s definitely good for encouraging the right impact factors for driver 🔥
I have been wanting to get castle tees for the sake of consistency and i think u just sold me on comiting to buying some when my season starts!
I’m now sold on it, only issue is, I’ve got about 1000 normal ones to use first and I’m too tight to waste them 😂
@garymartingolf yea im just getting to the point where im low on tees so wilo just use those for the odd teed up wood shot or iron on a par 3 kinda thing
Awesome experiment Gaz and just recently I went to the oink castle tee just to get a consistent tee height, I will try the orange tee on Sunday mate on the range before I play
I think you need to try it on a launch monitor if you can. Check your numbers, and strike pattern 👌🏼
Castle tees have been around since the 70's. White was really high back then. blue was mostly used with driver or yellow!!
Orange castle for me and pink into the wind
I would love to see a video of all types of tees vs each other. I’ve always felt like those castle tees impede the club because of that thick stem I know that it’s probably so minimal but it’s a perception thing for me
Great job with the review. Something good for everyone to know. I have used the orange castle tees for the past two years. Good choice. 👊🏼🏌🏻♂️⛳️
Thanks Josh
That is mad! Can't believe them results. Love your content 👌🏽
Thanks Dai 👌🏼👌🏼
One of the best videos I’ve seen in a long time, thank you
I go half ball showing above the driver 😊well done gaz
I used too, orange sits far higher, not something I’ve ever felt comfortable with to be honest.
I have used castle tees for years. It was always pink till I found a tall grey one. The problem with grey is that they are easily lost. Orange was the solution. I sometimes sky one off the top edge but that is down to my cr@p swing. Cheers Gary.
I found driver bounces off (hard) mat but doesn’t on (soft) grass, so need more height for mat. Would be good to see this test on course
I have the same frustration, a 65mm castle would be ideal
You don't want to increase your spin, it's perfect! You want to increase your launch a bit more. Try a higher loft setting, or a higher loft head
So is the moral of the story is experiment with tee hight to get the best gain and safe over £600+😃
That’s a very good point! 😅
In these winter weather conditions that we have I always use a white tee. Hitting into wind I have to keep it low. Usually it's pink tee all the way
You’ve given me another idea! Setting the launch monitor up for into the wind shots 😅
I always tee lower in the wind
@@garymartingolfswing the same as you do with the tall tee. Just lower the tee and move the ball back in the stance. You can swing the exact same and get a lower launch without changing mechanics
Great review Gary, very interesting results pal.
Cheers Greg. Definitely teeing it up from now, well, until I sky one anyway 😅
I bought some tees from Telos. They're a plastic tee with a ring that allows for adjustable height. They're $10 US for 3. I've had them for a year and only used 1 so far.
I’ve seen them!!! I’ve ordered some but they haven’t come yet! I thought they’d be great for this 👌🏼👌🏼
@@garymartingolf I think you'll like them.
Gary, Ive been on about this to my playing partners for years, the 2 longest hitters in my group (by a lot) all use 9 degree drivers with orange castle tees!
Id even go as far as to say people who use higher lofted drivers have to because their tee is too low!
I learned from watching Trottie's Taylormade fitting videos that lower loft will create better transfer of energy. I think that is why long drivers will tee it very high.
As a pink tee user you’ve convinced me to try using orange. 😊
Certainly worth a try ⛳️
Nice video, try hitting iron shots using a red castle
It would be interesting to see data that reflects numbers with the yardages and what the probability/degree of off center strikes is … do they increase with a higher tee height? Personally, yes I see increased yardage with it tee’d UP but; resultant of my inconsistent delivery, I also get penalized more often with mishits (high and low on the face).
I always used pink but at one of my lessons my pro looked at my strike location on the sim and suggested an orange tee and gained distance
I use the pink tee, when I try orange it works for a week or two then I get lazy and end up skying a few. Also with orange I need to move the ball further forward and start hitting big left pulls (although then feel great.)
Also, I've never seen anyone with a smash factor over 1.5 on a gc quad or a 160mph ball speed with 103 clubhead speed, that is impressive efficiency.
I'd like to see a test of different tee cup sizes. Some tees have quite a small shallow cup to rest the ball on where others have a much larger cup with a soft rubber rim. Does it make a difference? I suspect the smaller there better, but I do not know that
Have you had a look at the club face to see if you are hitting in a different spot ?
Watching the video Your swing speed definitely increases from white to orange tee!!
Excellent test and amazing results
For me orange for driver and suppisingly blue for irons.
You need to peg it up to encourage a positive angle of attack.... I commented this to you a long time ago.
Strike is King for spin rates... 2100 rpm is a great number to have at 100 to 105mph.
She says I never listen 😅 Cheers bud
I use at least 3.5 inch tees.half an inch in the ground then ball on top, been doing that for over 20 years now.
I personally like the orange tee's, in the summer time in the UK 🇬🇧 tee it high and watch it fly . If its dry we get some good run 😊😊
Can’t wait for the summer to test them
lol 😄
Love my pink castle tees for the consistency
Very interesting, certainly worth a go down the range.... if only it sort out my stupid slice... lol
With using the equator of the ball as a reference line, how high do you now tee the ball up from the driver upper edge?
I use wooden regular tees, but mark them where to push them into the ground for my driver.
Are graduated tees for hackers? I’m just debating whether to mark my tees or go graduated lol
@@garymartingolf lol it’s what works for you. I try and use wooden tees as greenkeepers prefer them.
Interesting video!
Solid content. Just a couple of production thoughts - Panel light is too bright or too close to you when talking to the camera or it needs more red. Also place connectors every other hole across the top to get rid of those sags in the screen. Rock on.
Brilliant video. Very helpful 👌
Thank you !
I couldn’t get any looser, I’d been in there an hour doing a ball video lol 😂 😃
Nice mate!! I'm trying to build one as you do. I have a garage space, 10ft ceiling tall.
Is this your sim room, a 4K laser model? What would you suggest while picking the components?
Appreciate your input.
Been using orange tees for years works a treat for me pal👍
I’m converted 👌🏼
I like the 9 inch tees
My gf does 🤣
Dear Gary I use tee my son borough from the u.s.a.called martini tees which have bigger head so easier to put the ball on right sizes for the ball really like them not sure if you can buy the.m in Britain
I have heard of the name! I’ve not seen them on the UK market though.
Great analysis, I'll stick with orange :-)
Castle tees all day log on par 3, 4 or 5s
