  • Mixing "beckwith" at The Plant in Pittsboro, NC. using an Allen & Heath QU-16 console. For this event, the coverage for the crowd was not in front of the stage, but on the sides. RCF NX45A speakers for the tops, and a single 8004-AS speaker for the sub.
    This video is an extended view into the setup, sound check, and performance of the "beckwith" band.
    Thank you to "beckwith" for their assistance with setup and load-out!

    Just curious as to why you haven't set up the tops at either side of the stage as opposed to inside, resulting in some backwash from the tops and blocking band members? The QU is a great desk which I bought new in 2014 and only sold a couple of years ago as I had moved full time over to the QU-SB. I always used an iPad with the QU-16 inside or out as it was easier to see some of the gate/comp and EQ settings instead of looking at the small onboard screen.
    Using an iPad is a must for going out and listening to the act from all areas where people will be watching from, just takes the guesswork out of it. Sounds good. :)

    • @paratyshow
      @paratyshow หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      👍✅ I will take a shot at that from experience, the chance of rain during the show is probably the reason. You do not want to be moving speakers around in a rush in the rain during a show.

    • @leeroysilk
      @leeroysilk หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@paratyshow, I concur, but based on the clip, are the speakers currently positioned under any cover? They don't appear to be, so if it rains, they could still get wet.

    • @paratyshow
      @paratyshow หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@leeroysilk Looks to me like they are under the tent and away from the edges so a little blowing rain won't affect them but I could be wrong. Bet we will get a definitive answer real soon. LOL

      @stageleftaudio  29 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Thanks for all the comments! Yes, the speakers are placed just under the tent in case of rain, which was originally forecasted to start about an hour before they were scheduled to end. And we most certainly did not want to be trying to move speakers in a rush during the show!

    can you share more on the heat shield under the canopy - what material, and are you just using clamps to attach? Thanks!

    • @stageleftaudio
      @stageleftaudio  22 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      That "heat shield" is just a tarp. The tarp is black on one side and silver on the other. The silver side is facing up, which reflects the radiation away. I'm using basic plastic (cheap) clamps to attach the tarp to the top frame. I think I used 8 clamps to attach the tarp. The tent is 10ft x 10ft. The tarp is 10ft x 12ft.

    • @nedward5871
      @nedward5871 22 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@stageleftaudio Great to know and thanks. And liked your planning ahead with tarps on the side for sun setting as well as selecting a console for readability based on daylight/night-time.
      The QU is such a great console to graduate from Analog given the tactile controls - but if you want to drive from an iPad remotely, you can do that as well - plus the ability to do digital stage boxes...

    Amazing sound, clarity is phenomenal, do you have any tips for mixing a bass drum that is sealed and not ported?

    • @stageleftaudio
      @stageleftaudio  24 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Thanks for your comment. The best way to handle a non-ported bass drum is to mic it on the peddle side. You will get the "slap" of the beater hitting the drum along with the low frequency of the drum. I normally mic bass drums (including ported) in this manner if there is room to place the mic. Just make sure the mic is pointed directly at the area where the beater strikes the drum. Mixing the bass drum becomes a lot easier with good mic placement.

    Why not setup to the side so you can hear properly?

    • @stageleftaudio
      @stageleftaudio  27 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      This was considered, but the main reason we did not setup on the side was due to lack of space needed for the FOH tent due to areas where the guests normally sit during these types of events.

    Has the Allen and heath mixer given you any problems? I don’t know about the QU but I’ve heard about fader problems with the avantis and dlive. Also freezing problems mid show

    • @stageleftaudio
      @stageleftaudio  23 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      We've never had an any issues with the console. The faders have always functioned perfectly. I always promote the use of a voltage regulator on all computer equipment... digital consoles are computers and they can act strange if there is an issue with the power. Every event we've done, the consoles are connected to a voltage regulator. To date, no issues.

    Where do you get those stickers/labels for the road cases? Eg Allan and Heath?

    • @stageleftaudio
      @stageleftaudio  28 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The "SL" stickers are 2" vinyl; I don't recall where I got those (it was online). I ordered several sheets of "S" and "L" and put them together.
      For the "Allen & Heath" black/white sticker, this is just a 3/4" (white on black) thermal label printed from a Dymo label maker.
      All of the labels I use on my cases are low-cost (easily replaceable) solutions. It's cheaper to do this than pay for custom lettering/images. Much of the lettering on the cases gets torn up; it's easy to replace the damaged lettering with "over the counter" solutions.

      The main FOH output (one cable - left channel output) is run to the input of the sub. There's a "Y" splitter on the crossover-output of the sub... one side of splitter runs the FOH left top, and the other side runs the FOH right top.

    Bob, did you record the band with a SSD drive through ST3? How was the quality?

    • @stageleftaudio
      @stageleftaudio  28 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

      Yes, I did record the band (at their request), however, I used a (USB) HDD for the recording. After some testing (and research) with SSD devices, they do not work well (they work, but there's far too many errors with the recordings). The problem with SSD is there's no cache. Whereas, HDD devices have caching, which greatly helps with streaming inputs onto the device.
      I tested various SSD devices with the console; all had excessive errors. SSD is convenient, but is not a good recording medium for the QU mixer.
      The HDD I used in the video is a 1TB USB 2.0 drive (I bought in 2012). It has recorded several shows. The recording quality seems very good. Like any recording, the gain needs to be set appropriately. I gave the recordings to the band for them to do their own mix-down.
      For contrast, the Presonus consoles I have all use 32G SD cards; they too produce great recordings, however, any caching taking place is managed by the console (not the recording medium).
      Hope this helps!
